Tigers players want to stay at Leichhardt

I am not a Mayer fan either Doc but ground allocation is a board decision. I am sure he will have input but the final decision rests with the board. Not sure what the Magpie directors will want but it may not matter if the three NRL directors don't want to play there and go to where the money is.

No doubt its a board decision as a whole but as you say, I'm sure his input is massive. In respect to the magpie directors I'm sure they'd like to have games like Manly at Campbo each year, I know its all about the money I don't really have an issue with playing the so called blockbusters at Homebush where they think they will pull upwards of 25 k ppl . Pulling already allocated games from a venue grates me and it would grate me if the same thing happened to Campbelltown.

For all the winging and supposed love foe Leichardt the last 2 games we played their and both of those were
a) V Sydney Teams
b) On a Saturday - so no issues with friday or monday night traffic

And the Crowds were horrible.
v Roosters - 5297
v Sharks not far away - 5112

Also
v Gold Coast on a Sunday - 8929

That tells one simple story that it is not worth playing their anymore and its not worth playing at Campbeltown either
v Melbourne - 7782
v Canberra - 9243
v Cowboys - 6456

If the stadium is paying you then this you can have small crowds occasionally - but 3 games out of each ground the crowds wern't their.

We need to take the money and perhaps looks at 1 game at Leichardt and 1 at Campbelltown a year with the other 10 at ANZ

I'm hoping the scheduled games this year at Leichhardt go as planned. It'd be dumb to move them.
As for the future - as much as we want to play our games at a traditional ground it ain't going to happen. If it did we'd no longer have a team to support.
In saying all that we need to improve the game day experience at ANZ so it doesn't end up sterile.

mightymagpie,I do agree with some of what you have said, the scheduled games at LO…..

ANZ stadium is a huge place to fill, when you get 25/30thousand at a good game the place seems empty with little atmosphere..

This is why I think the suburban grounds shouldn't be completely abandoned....they are our heritageLO.Campbelltown Stadium...2 games a year would be great at each, however,I'm starting to think they will be a thing of the past as well.....Money speaks all languages....

As Tiger said,LO with the family Sunday afternoon...sensational....

Campbelltown on a Friday night or Saturday afternoon or night are pretty awesome as well..

I travelled to Campbelltown many a time for games and I remember one Friday night when WTS played Cronulla,it was Kieths last year at the Sharks, there was 18/19 thousand there and it was a fantastic atmosphere...Campbos not a bad place to watch footy at...

Anyway we all have different opinion and it doesn't matter if you or I agree with each other or not,the powers that be at the club will decide what is best for the club I HOPE.... 😛ray:

So 13,198 x average $25 ticket per person = $329,950 - supposed $70,000 in costs to play at Leichhardt = $229,950 this doesn't include corporate box sales, food and beverage sales + sponsorship revenue etc. This compares to max $100k for playing at ANZ Stadium, what am I missing? Does Mayer have shares in ANZ Stadium??

Anyhoo onto the article

The Wests Tigers have 10 days to decide whether to agree to a lease from Leichhardt Council that would lock the club into a minimum of four games a season at the iconic Leichhardt Oval.

More than 13,000 fans piled into the picturesque suburban ground on Sunday afternoon, but Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer said the figure was irrelevant to the club's future at the venue.

Balmain Tigers were recently forced to hand over their lease to Leichhardt Council as a result of the club's financial woes.

In the past it was left to the Wests Tigers to decide the number of games they played at the suburban ground each season, however the council wants to lock the Tigers into a minimum of four games each year.

Mayer refused to guarantee the club would play games at Leichhardt next season, however is adamant suburban grounds (both Leichhardt and Campbelltown) remained part of the plans for the future.

"Can I guarantee anything at the moment? No," he said. "But I don't want people to think for a second we're moving away from our heartland. We've said there's a future in suburban grounds for this club. I stay absolutely true to that and I know the board also do. We've locked in, before the change of lease, the four games for our members. All we're doing is taking our time now that we have a lease and a formal document, to consider until the 30th April and we'll advise our members shortly after."

In the hiring agreement the council is waiting for the TIgers to sign, it clearly states the Tigers receive all revenue from the sale of merchandise, ticket sales, broadcast rights and fees, sponsorship and advertising.

It costs the Tigers almost $70,000 to play a game at Leichhardt Oval, while they are paid more than $100,000 per game to take matches to ANZ Stadium.

While the Tigers, who were originally tracking for a crowd of 8000 when wet weather was forecast earlier in the week, were delighted with the crowd against the Raiders on Sunday, they insist it will have no impact on their decision at the end of the month.

"Today's game was never about our decision for the future," Mayer said.

"We've been pretty transparent about it. We've been offered a deed or a lease from council … 30th April is the day the board meets and today's crowd has no influence on that decision.

"The reality is the last 15 years we've been dealing with our owner in the Balmain Tigers in regards to a lease. We've all of a sudden now jumped into a situation, not through our own hand, that the council has taken back the facility. What we've been doing is going through a process to make sure the lease has been given us, which is a legally binding document, is right for us."

Your missing insurances, hire of the big screen and staffing for starters. What possible reason would 3 or 4 CEO's in a row lie to us about suburban grounds not being profitable? The true disgrace is that nothing has been done about it.

I am sure all those things are covered in the $70k quoted in the article. Something is seriously wrong if it costs $70k to hire a ground announcer, a big screen, a crappy p.a. system, 10 x ticket sellers and 40 x security (approx) for 1 game.

I have no idea what the CEO's reasoning is, but I shudder to think what the impact will be on our finances when we play Canberra at ANZ Stadium in front of 5000 people, of which the majority are ANZ or have other reciprocal membership. Do they not see that suburban grounds need to stay at least for games against Sharks, Raiders, Storm, Warriors, Knights, Broncos, Titans, Manly (you could prob add Roosters and Cowboys to that list).

By taking away games from Leichhardt and Campbelltown we will alienate more supporters, how many of those 13,000 today would have travelled to ANZ? Maybe a third? How many members would they lose by only having ANZ Stadium? The problem we face and the reason in my opinion that so many CEO's have come and gone is because they have never understood that they need to engage the community and not just chase the easy dollars.

I too am baffled by the $70,000 costs involved at playing there but i read somewhere that the dragons pay similar numbers if not more to play at kogarah. Hence the reason they've moved some games to ANZ.
