Tigers v Sea Eagles

Here are the stats for an ageing, over the hill Clint Gutherson, playing on busted legs in the twilight of his career, probably half the player he once was:
13 games
6 tries
6 try assists
39 Tackle breaks
15 Line breaks
169 average metres
81% defence

Now our fullback Bula, star of our team at the peak of his powers:
13 games
4 tries
4 try assists
46 tackle breaks
7 line breaks
174 running metres
83% defence.

We really do overrate our own players.
im a stats guy and i get your point of view but I guess the question is how many coaches are taking current clint over bula. While I don't know, I would say very few. They also have very different roles. Clint is almost their primary playmaker when the drags are playing good.

I think Bula is fantastic but I also think if your picking our best player and you don't choose May you may be taking him for granted.

I think you missed my point. I chose Clint only to compare him to a fullback who is clearly at the end of his career.
You are correct that Clint would not be wanted by many if any clubs at this stage.
I'm just illustrating that we have a group bias towards our players that ignores the facts.

Now lets compare our guy to what a top fullback actually looks like:

Teddy: (Bula's staistics in brackets)
14 Games (13)
5 tries (4)
10 try assists (4)
96 tackle breaks (46)
13 line breaks (7)
78% tackle efficiency (83)
207 running metres (174)

Our guy has a lot of improving to do to deserve the accolades our supporters already give him.
💯 correct RBS.
Bula is currently a standard run of the mill fullback, does his job, nothing more nothing less.
He is due to increase his 700k salary to 900k plus by 2027 if we are to retain him, as you say he still has a lot of improving to do to be worthy of that type of money.

Couple of things that stats don't cover is Teddy is still impressive but is approaching the twilight of his career where Bula is still young and can improve approaching his best years.

Teddy's not as quick as he was and will get slower the longer he plays, Bula in the clear has good pace and is hard to catch and is constantly a threat.

You're probably reading this V it's true there're areas in his game where he can get a lot better at the moment for sure, but the 900K is 2 seasons away yet and he will be 25 coming into the best years of his career there is no reason he can't take his game to the level to justify those dollars.

DCE high kicks with Turbo/Hoppa on his inside chasing in the middle will be on all game. Preparing for an absolute blood bath for Mason.

Not the kids fault but Benji has rocks in his head if he thinks Mason is even close to NRL level at fullback against that combo
So is he and his coaching team stupid, did they not consider the implications of his capability under the high ball, if so why would they name him at f/b then ?
Or are us wise old owls on the forum the only ones who can see the error of their ways ?

Gee Teddy’s numbers are really down this year
