Tigers want to lock up Sheens before rivals come knocking

@Balmain Bug said:
Yes I agree with some of these points. But I will only be happy with the Fonz if he gets the results on the paddock. Something he himself has not been used to doing in the last **FIFTEEN YEARS !!!!!.**.

This is just inflammatory & senseless rhetoric!!!!!

But you wouldn't understand those words Bug!!!

Find someone else to blame for the Magpies problems - your own backyard would be a good place to look!!!!

Is it West Magpies problem that Sheens has had a shocking win/loss ratio in the last 15 years?

How many coaches have won premierships in that 15 years??

I believe Sheens has won one of those premierships out of the 13 on record in the last fifteen years.

Bennett is the only one to have won more than one premiership in the last fifteen years (obviously excepting Bellamy.)

All other coaches are suffering from the same sydnrome it would appear. Everyone forgets that the bloody ESL & the Schoolies came through and tried to rip apart our side (successfully snaring Prince and Boof, and nearly luring Faffy away,) and it has been a struggle to rebuild the side ever since.

Sheens is on a winner here. He has the right staff and the right cattle. He'd be nuts to leave now.

I agree he would be nuts to leave. Humphreys has some interesting decisions to make. Humphreys has obviously decided he wants the Fonz for the next couple of years, so what does he do? How much does he offer? Lets say Wayne Bennett gets $600,000 a year and the Fonz gets say, $450,000, how much would you offer him for 2012? More or less ? What if Humphreys offers the Fonz $500,000 a year and the Fonz misses the semis in 2011 ???? What do we do then?

In all seriousness BB, I don't think it will happen. I believe we're well on our way to winning a premiership within the next three years. You're well within your right to question the results between 2006-2009 and I guess your criticism of him during this period is warranted. I think most of us are a little wary of failure but in reality we have the bulk of our FG team locked in until the end of 2012 which made the prelim final last year which can only mean that our expectation is to at least make the prelim finals again, or make it to the big dance and walk away with the chocolates. I think it's fair to offer him maybe two more years, with an option to extend his stay if certain KPI's are met.

Sheens has been rebuilding the side, and I would like to think that he hates missing out on the silverware as much as we do. I don't care how much he is paid, I know he will be working his ring out to get us to another premiership. I honestly believe that we are a very real chance this year, and just remember that both Balmain and Wests were on-field basket cases by the time the JV came about, and Sheens delivered us a premiership that broke the drought for us long suffering fans on both sides of the JV.

I am so sick of hearing about Tim Sheens only coaching 1 team to a semi final in 15 years. I agree that post 2005 he has to take some of the blame for the failures we've endured except for last season. Let's forget about his time in Canberra and concentrate on the years between 1997 and 2004\. He took over the Cowboys in 1997 when they were had a lease on the league's wooden spoon. He took on a job that NO-ONE WANTED. He tried to build the club and was blocked at every turn by the North Queensland board. When he resigned in 2001 he wasn't the only one to walk out, CEO Rabieh Krayem walked out as did head train Bryan Hinder and conditioning coach Donna O'Conner. All blaming the board for the debacle that was happening at North Queensland. It wasn't just Sheens having issues with the board, there were 3 other people! How do you blame Sheens' coaching for what happened at North Queensland????

He took over the tigers in 2002 who we all remember as a laughing stock. He was allowed to do his job unlike his time at North Queensland and won us a premiership in his 1st 3 year contract. From 2005 till 2009 it was a cocktail of players leaving, injuries, some of Tim's game time tactics and some eyebrow raising purchases by Tim which has cost us. I'm a huge Tim Sheens fan but his time here between 2005-2009 can't escape questioning.

You want to question Tim's coaching career from the past 15 years just to support your dislike of him? I'd rather be fair to the man and question his time between 2005-2009\. Isn't that the right thing to do?

And like everyone his salary will be determined by both market value & what the club can afford!!!

This is a non-argument!!

"What if he misses the semis in 2011"- what if we lose Marshall & Farah for the season - do we blame Tim????

In life if you cant do what your being paid to do you tend to get figured out and moved on pretty quickly.

Tim Sheens aint that blessed to have coached the MOST games in the NRL (Yes more than Benny) and not have any ability.

I like the man, I respect his ability, I love the fact that the stars and heavyweights of our team and indeed the Rugby League community speak so highly of him.

Surely they all cant be wrong.

Im not a crowd follower and never have been - Thats why I go for the Tigers, My family are all Dragons and mates are mostly dogs. I will however side with the majority here and state that "**Tim Sheens is the Best thing that EVER happened to our club and the best man to continue to direct us".**

Forumers, Bug is entitled to his opinion, We should show some respect to our own.

Wow, given the latest news that Souths consider Bennett only an outside chance of coaching their team, I reckon they have Sheens as their "contingency". **That said I wouldn't be surprised to see Souths go all out for Sheens** with Bennett likely to move back to Brisbane…It would be a travesty if Sheens left the Tigers..The next 3 years should be the Tigers best given our roster....and for mine there should be one man as Coach during this period and that is Sheens!.

Builds a team from nothing in 2002 and wins a comp 3 years later. Not bad for a bloke who cant coach.

+1.

Interesting how everyone notes his time at the cowboys also as a failure. Has anyone since Sheens had any success with them? They have made a qualifying final and a grand final and got pipped at the post by our Sheens-led Tigers. Hurst/Murray/Millward/Henry have all done slim to bugger all also and that is with the worlds best halfback in the side (not to mention players like Paul Bowman, Josh Hannay, Matt Bowen, LOD, Ty Williams, Matt Sing and Carl Webb in his heyday…) which Sheens didn't have at his disposal. Not to mention the club was run like a brothel in its early years (much like the us,) and Sheens was ultimately the scapegoat for the clubs failings off the field just as much as on it...
