TIGERTALK COLUMN: CHRIS LAWRENCE
29/03/2012 1:12:00 PM
Wests Tigers centre Chris Lawrence is confident the side will quickly bounce back to the winners circle.
In his TigerTalk column in the Campbelltown Advertiser this week, Lawrence says fans should keep the faith.
LAWRENCE'S LOWDOWN
Three straight losses is not the ideal way to start the season for Wests Tigers.
The loss to Canberra on our home turf at Campbelltown Sports Stadium was very disappointing, not only for the team but for our many great members and fans who attended the match.
Looking back on the game, I thought we started well even though the Raiders got the first try. Our defence was pretty good and although we made a few mistakes, we bounced back. We got into the grind.
We didn’t have a lot of ball in the first half but I thought we capitalised on our opportunities. It was disappointing that they got a touch of luck to score just before half-time to almost even it up.
The second half was just disappointing. We came out and just made mistake after mistake and gave away penalties. Canberra played some good footy and got some repeat sets which put us under the pump. We just couldn’t get back into the grind after that.
It just seemed that they had all the ball and it felt like 5-10 minutes had passed and we hadn’t even seen the ball. We just burnt ourselves out in defence and in the last 10 minutes, you could see the boys were trying hard but we were just gassed. I think in the second half they had 22 sets to our 13 or 14.
It is just something we have to work on. We can’t expect to win football games with no possession.
Every player is trying hard and working hard at training. That’s the most frustrating thing as every player is having a crack but the results are not just coming out on the field.
The only way for us to get out of this is to keep working hard. We need to work even harder on our games individually and as a team. We will fight our way out of this.
Every team goes through a bit of a low patch during the season and unfortunately for us, it is at the start.
We will bounce back. It is about sticking tight and working hard on the field and finding a way out of this hole. We just need to learn from what we have done wrong in the last few weeks and improve in that area.
This Sunday, we need to bounce back against South Sydney at Allianz Stadium. Souths have been very impressive and have a great forward pack. They are really dangerous out wide with some great outside breaks. It will be a very tough game. It won’t get any easier for us.
However we have the belief that we can win any game once we are in it but like I said, it is all about hard work and playing to our game plan.
We need all of the Wests Tigers supporters to get to Allianz Stadium and keep getting behind us. We need your support to help get us through this tough time. I know we can and will get through it.
