The speed of Wests Tigers half-back Tim Moltzen should not be underestimated in 2012 according to centre Chris Lawrence.

Moltzen will start the season in the seven jersey when Wests Tigers take on Cronulla Sharks at Leichhardt Oval in the opening round of the Telstra Premiership on Sunday,March 4 at 2pm.

The former full-back will re-unite with five-eighth Benji Marshall – a halves partnership that has seen Wests Tigers win 9 of 11 matches with Moltzen at 7.

Lawrence's opinion on Moltzen's speed backs up the claim made by Wests Tigers Head Coach Tim Sheens that he feels he has the fastest halves pairing in the competition in Marshall and Moltzen.

“Benji and Tim have played together on and off for the last couple of years and now they have had a pre-season of settling down and having that same combination, you can see the improvement they have made over the trials,’’ Lawrence said.

“I’m sure it will probably be a couple of weeks before we see them at their best but they are looking really good.

“Everyone knows how much speed Benji Marshall has got but I’d say Timmy Moltzen would be the closest to the quickest in the Club at the moment.

“In the first trial against Parramatta, he ran down Chris Sandow so he has got plenty of pace once he gets going. In the clear, I hate to try to stop him.”

Let's just hope we see this speed going forward through their defensive line and not just having to chase down opposition half-backs

Looks like Sharks enjoy playing at Leichhardt.

No doubt his speed will come in handy at times. But as far as im concerned, a halfback having genuine speed is just a bonus, not something that should be focused on. Id rather hear reports about his developing kicking game, his ability to talk and direct players, his belief in being able to close out a game. For me, those attributes will be much more important to us.

Really looking forward to sunday to see how he goes.

looking at some of the highlights from the Trials, if our big men go forward to give our halves some room, we could blow teams off the park this year… The speed of the ball movement along with Moltz running game could be devastating.

Agree Watto, that's why I want Lote or Koroibete or Brown on that left wing, Utai's lack of pace does not fill me with confidence when the Tigers go wide. The other thing the Tigers need to remember is to lay a platform up the middle before going wide. They lost a few games last year because they went side to side far too often. Now the Tigers have a pack that can take most sides on up the middle so they should damn well use it.
