Tim Sheen's explains the reson for recruiting Adam Blair and

TIM Sheens wants to get one thing off his chest in all this commotion about clearing the decks to make way for star recruit Adam Blair.

The Wests Tigers coach wants to explain his decision to let Andrew Fifita and Bryce Gibbs go to Cronulla to sign the former Storm enforcer.

'Everyone is assuming we cut players to fit Adam - Adam was part of the puzzle but only part of it," Sheens said. "The other major parts was the signing of the two young props (Aaron ) Woods and (Matt) Groat - and also a number of other players who had increases to their contracts built in this year.

"We almost had room to keep everybody and Adam to be quite honest but we wanted to keep the two young props and we also had to increase contracts on two or three other players we wanted to keep in the system.

"Those sort of things squeeze people out of your club. It was disappointing.

"You ask any coach, they don't want to lose any player if they can help it but that decision had to be made.

"They were tough decisions but I continually cop, 'Oh, you had to do it for Adam Blair'.

"We didn't have to do it for Adam. We were either going to keep the two props that went to Cronulla or we were going to lose the two young ones but the same club Cronulla chased them as well so I had to make a decision as to which props I wanted to keep and I made a call."

And so the Tigers move forward - the bookies' favourites for 2012.

Sheens just smiles.

February favourites have a history of falling over come September - and for the past two years the Tigers have suffered finals heartbreak.

Last year it was in the grand final qualifier against the Warriors when Krisnan Inu scored that controversial try.

After the game the coach could hardly talk it hurt so much - but he's had time to contemplate the positives.

Every year offers a fresh start, he said.

Chris Lawrence, Gareth Ellis, Lote Tuqiri and Simon Dwyer were all missing for extended periods last season through injury and this season he can count on all bar Dwyer.

And along with Blair's arrival, Joel Reddy and Matt Bell have the coach excited, while Tim Moltzen shifts to halfback to cover Robert Lui's departure to the Cowboys.

Moltzen and Benji Marshall now form a lightning quick halves partnership.

"I made the comment (after last weekend's trial win over Parramatta) that I think we have the quickest halves pair in the game and I think the Parramatta game showed that," he said.

"Marshall is super quick and Timmy came from behind to run him (Chris Sandow) down on the intercept and force a turnover.

"I don't think too many other halfbacks could do that, in fact I don't think any other halfbacks could do that."

Then there's the rookie everyone is talking about, James Tedesco.

The 19-year-old started last season playing SG Ball - this season he'll be telling internationals to get cracking.

He is the wildcard in a wonderful roster.

"We have signed him for three years which I think is indicative of what we think of him," Sheens said of the 2010 Australian schoolboy. "As far as whether he will be our first grade fullback from day one and never look back, it's hard to say. He only had half a year in 20s so it is a big ask … just being the boss of the team from the back, telling people what to do. Telling internationals what to do and barking at them. It's not easy for any young man."

But the coach is confident the signing of Blair could make all the difference in 2012.

"I think he is a pivotal signing," Sheens said. "We have the making of an engine room you need to go forward in this game, to lay the platform for Farah and Benji and now Moltzen playing half."

Good article.

Wait for the usual suspects bagging Sheens about how he has ruined the fabric of the club etc, letting people go and how he has no idea.

Personally, and looking back 8 or 10 years ago, I don't think we have ever looked better!

"We were either going to keep the two props that went to Cronulla or we were going to lose the two young ones but the same club Cronulla chased them as well so I had to make a decision as to which props I wanted to keep and I made a call."

If this was the case then why not keep Gibbs and let Groat go? There must have been more to it than Sheens is willing to say publically. People have referred to Gibbs' injuries so maybe this has more to do with it but if this is the case then Cronulla are taking a gamble.

- The two young ones do provide better value
- The two young ones are potentially better
- Gibbs injuries/fifita a risk

Sheens made a great call, support him all the way

Bang on TL.

Like 99% of the rest of the forum I would have still like to have kept Gibbs, but unfortunately the club made that call.

Absolutely. It's always nice to try and keep guys who have come through the system and been at the club for a long time like Gibbs did, but what's not to say that Groat and Woods won't be in exactly the same position in eight years time and we are all sitting here saying they should be rewarded for their loyalty even if they are past there best.

To be honest Groat realy didn't convince me last year. The Warriors final always stands out for me with the 2 crucial mistakes he made. At this stage of their careers i'd rather Fifita. Hope Groat proves me wrong

sheens values backrowers higher than props.
he believes you can simply ask a backrower to step up to prop when injuries pile up.
and it doesn't work most of the time.

it was refreshing last year to replace props with props.

Correct, but it'll never go to print.

Agree. Gibbs is probably good for another couple of years, but with a history of knee problems, that's an issue that won't get better with age. The club 100% made the right decision in this situation. Woods has SOO written all over him and I think we'll see Groat kick on more this year too.

The mechanisms of the salary cap means clubs need to make tough decisions….offloading Fifita no issue, Gibbs has peaked and on the way down....if offloading them meant we retained Groat/Woods and upgraded contracts of Tedesco etc...1000% the right decision!

I bag Sheens out a lot for the weird decisions he makes sometimes, but I believe that over the next couple of years we will all see that he has definitely made the correct call on this one.

If they are expecting to get a premiership in the next 3 seasons then I would have taken experience over youth! Gibbs had finally rubbed out those 2 or 3 errors out of his game and was a real workhorse in the team. If you had to keep 2, I would have kept Gibbs and Woods! But im not a coach…never will be...so whatever the decision, they had 'their' reasons.

I reckon we have a pretty good balance of youth and experience right now,, and expecting groat to be a big improver this year. The guy is a man mountain and with guys like Blair , galloway and Ellis around it can only help groat and woods reach their potential

Absolutely… I don't think anyone could make an argument to me that sheens made the wrong choice when it came down to keeping Woods & Grout or Gibbs & Fifita...

I think Woods will be the best of the lot... our new Blocker Roach!
Grout is a year younger than Woods so we'll see what he has this year, but has great potential.
Or...
Gibbs I think is the biggest loss we had, but was peaking and i'm not sure if he is going to get any better than he was last year.
Fifita... like others have said... he would've been a big risk to keep especially over Woods or Grout.

Tim Sheens has explained his reasons for player retention.
done and dusted

now lets get on with playing consistent footy, not getting run down when have the lead.etc

Agree the right decision for now.

Would love all 3 to be at the club their entire careers but unfortunatley one day it will be Groat, Woods and Tedesco told to pack your bags and move on for younger ones coming through.

I saw Flanagan being interviewed,he said The WestsTigers offered Gibbs to us to ease salary cap pressure,we(Cronulla) said we would only take Gibbs if Fifita was to come too, otherwise they were not interested.
Flanagan seemed pretty happy that he got his man(Fifita) and Gibbs was just part of the deal in his opinion, someone he could use but wasn't fussed either way was the opinion I got from the interview,Flanagan rated Fifita as one of the best young forwards in the game, time will tell I suppose.
