Tim Sheens fumes at disgraceful rumours

The most ridiculous part about it is that the club has made more people aware of the Rumour then any website ever did.

I work with 9 big Footy fans, only one of the besides me had heard the Rumour prior to yesterday, now all of them know it.

Like the one concerning the roosters a few weeks ago if thru just ignored it it would have gone away, who talks about that one anymore? No one.

However our club as always is to preoccupied with these little medial issues when their time and energy is best spent elsewhere.

Willow points taken…I'm simply saying IF the club is serious about finding the culprit(s) they would be onto this today and with the cooperation of the ISP's and authorities would have some serious leads in a couple of days....more than enough time to find them....I hope they are and they identify and charge those involved.

The rumour came out a couple of weeks ago now, that's the problem - Finding evidence now will be difficult if not impossible. ISPs do not need to cooperate either, they can tell the Tigers to get nicked if they want. Law enforcement would need a search warrant to analyse the computers and the time required to get enough information for an affidavit in this particular instance makes it a pointless exercise I'm sorry to say.

I thought the rumour came out last Tuesday..

It peaked this week but it's been wafting around for a few weeks thanks to the Daily Smellograph publishing one of their fastistious* rumour bits where they don't name players and so can't be sued. Then that other august organ of truth, the LU forums, ran with it. These people, despite clear and emphatic denials still believe the rumour to be partially or completely true. I recall rleague.com having to shut their forums over some libellous items posted - me thinks LU could be on the same course unless they reign in some of their more extreme posters.

As you may know (or others would) I was against the whole thing being discussed on this forum but I will say the moderators (Kul I think in particular) did an extremely good job in contacting the club, getting verification, and ending the rumours.

* Thanks to the Mod who lent me the word fastistious which was far more eloquent than my original!

Long Story Short…

When info like this comes along it is the measure of the man and the fan at what he or she does with it.

Do you propagate the gossip harming the club, the brand and the player or do we refuse to allow it to snowball on our watch.

We may not be able to stop this type of discussion however we should not be adding to it.

the problem is gary, who determines what the line is? is joking about players partners taking it too far?

I would say yes. They are a party outside the playing circle.

i meant from the players, not outside parties.
but yeh obviously anyone discussing someone out of the public eye on a forum isn't called for.

Guess what. If they had a job outside football they wouldn’t have so much time for stupid pranks stupid tweets, stupid tattoos, stupid hairstyles.
End of problem.

i dont disagree with you re:working. but times have changed and it isn't going to happen.
also, no need to be judgemental on peoples haircuts/tattoos. im sure u have ur own style flaws.

newspapers are genuine businesses that at times make money by publicizing speculative information about actors, sports people etc etc. so lets not go all crazy and start blaming rugby league players for what clearly a bigger problem than just twittering and playing pranks.

i just think they need to learn how not to react and give these people starting stuff the time of day, because once they do the rumor/goss goes up a notch.

Okay it was a very damaging rumour but put it to bed and move on. The more media it is given the more damage it will do. The CEO did the right thing and Sheens did the right thing by slamming it in the press, now move on. Theirs a lot bigger things to worry about in life than some crappy rumours started by a few morons.

Channel 10 sport just had a piece on the Tigers and these nonsense rumours. Lui was spoken to and just mentioned that the playing group are all very tight from the seniors right down to the 20's and there is plenty of belief in the group that they can go all the way.

Now while they may have the belief, they need to continue to improve their game and not let rubbish rumours affect them as they have in this instance.

IMO it is a disgrace that we allow these sort of topics to be discussed in the first place we do not as supporters need to stoke the fire we should play no part in it. I would like to see a ban on those sort of subjects they are counter productive and have no relevence in the game itself.

Hmmm….so you think continuing to discuss it helps keep it going? Interesting.
I think you might be onto something.

Funny thing is, this is sooooo tame compared to the crap that was posted for years during seasons 06-09....this is a drop in the ocean really. Why werent they so upset back then?>

From the SMH:

Tigers to keep rumour probe in-house
Glenn Jackson
May 31, 2011

WESTS TIGERS officials will conduct an internal investigation into the social media fiasco that resulted in destabilising rumours about their star players being made public last week.

While Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys was reluctant to speak specifically about the club's plans following rumours their coach Tim Sheens described as ''disgraceful'', it is understood the club was yesterday inundated with phone calls and emails from lawyers and technology experts who were prepared to help them find the perpetrators behind the rumour prop Bryce Gibbs was involved in a physical altercation with five-eighth Benji Marshall.

Social media websites, including Twitter, went into overdrive with the gossip, which has been denied by all parties implicated. The club is willing to make use of some of the resources now at its disposal, but is baulking at the prospect of legal action, believing such a process would be too convoluted and costly. The law surrounding such cases is ambiguous.

Advertisement: Story continues below The club also wants to prevent the matter dragging on and becoming a distraction for the team.

''We've made our comments,'' Humphreys said yesterday. ''We remain disappointed with the whole episode. There are lessons for everyone through it.''

It is understood officials have asked Gibbs and Fulton, notorious pranksters, whether they had been the source of the initial rumours about a training-ground altercation, which subsequently took on a life of their own.

Meanwhile, X-rays yesterday confirmed winger Matt Utai suffered a broken arm against St George Illawarra on Sunday. Doctors said Utai had sustained an underlining fracture and would be sidelined for about six weeks. The loss of Utai for an extended period is likely to be offset by the return of winger Lote Tuqiri from a broken arm.

Tuqiri's arm has healed but his return has been held up by infections in both arms in recent weeks. But the Australian representative is expected to return against Newcastle on Monday night at Leichhardt Oval, as is second-rower Gareth Ellis (ankle).

Wouldn't surprise me. The problem with acting like the muppet all the time is that things sometimes get out of control.

Had to laugh at the telegraph. Main article on the page is talking about the players (eg Farah, Gibbs) using twitter and joking amongst themselves and those jokes possibly getting out of hand. Then you read the little article at the bottom of the page where Tuquiri has declared himself fit to replace Utai… using twitter!

I guess it shows the two sides of the coin with twitter...

It's laziness Juro. Twitter is a fair enough source of primary information but you shouldn't be publishing if you can verify (or not) the information by another means. Not hard to make a few calls and see if the information is genuine.

It is when the club doesn't talk to you Yoss

Maybe although stuff like a player being available could surely be easily confirmed by talking to someone at the club, perhaps (and this is a bit out there) even the player in question. If the club aren't providing a response to things along the lines of the recent rumour, well they have a case to answer too.

Still we've come a long way from the concept that you only publish if you are reasonably sure of the facts and have a reliable source.
