TODD PAYTEN NAMES NYC SIDE TO PLAY BRONCOS

Wests Tigers Coach Todd Payten has named his side to play Brisbane Broncos at Allianz Stadium on Good Friday in round 6 of the NYC competition.

After 5 rounds, Wests Tigers sit in second place on the ladder (on for and against) and are one of 3 sides locked on 8 points through 4 wins from 5 matches.

Brisbane sit back in 12th place on 4 competition points. Wests Tigers will be looking for their fifth straight win following a shock first round loss to Cronulla.

Former Sydney Roosters centre Asipeli Fine will make his debut for Wests Tigers. He has joined the squad to replace Michael Kai who has returned home to Queensland for personal reasons.

Congrats to Kyle Lovett on getting a start. To think two years ago he was playing in the centres, now in the front row. Will definitely be training with the full time squad over the pre-season and can see him as a good backup option for the back row next year.

Andy Fiagatusa had a great game last week, keen to see the big afro tear the opposition up again. Solid effort from Innosessio as well.

Surprised to see Matt Evans dropped.
 
These kids are going great guns at the moment.
They should have really beaten the sharks in round 1 and be unbeaten.

I think shows the quality of Todd Payten's footy brain, I knew he'd work out to be a good coach.

Seems if NYC wins NRL loses. I hope Todd does the right thing and lets the NRL team win this week. :laughing:

Lovett is one player I'd definitely be adding to the fulltime squad for next off-season. Mind you there are easily half a dozen players in this team who would benefit of training fulltime with FG squad next season.

Ah k, he was listed in the 'outs' group and not on the 'injured' section of the team announcement, but has been added to the injury list updated yesterday.
 
FORWARDS NEED TO MAINTAIN INTENSITY

Wests Tigers NYC Coach Todd Payten has called on his talented young forwards to maintain their intensity against the lowly placed Brisbane Broncos on Good Friday at Allianz Stadium.

After five rounds, Wests Tigers sit in second position on the NYC ladder and go into the match on the back of a 36-24 win over South Sydney at the same venue last Sunday.

Although happy to get the two points, Payten said his side ‘cruised in and out of the game’ and made some poor decisions.

“At 12-0 we were in control. Our forwards were making good yards and were punching through the middle. A drop ball and a couple of missed tackles and they’re back into it. We can’t keep doing that or we will eventually pay the price,’’ Payten said.

“Our forwards as a unit played really well. They’re now playing a lot smarter, especially in attack. Instead of one out plays, we’re now running in pairs which really opens up our attacking options and always keeps the defence second guessing.

“Our defence has also been sound and that’s reflected in us having the second best record in the comp behind leaders Newcastle.

“The guys have really bought into what we’re trying to do. We’ve really worked hard on that aspect of our game.

“When you win games you start to develop a winning mentality, meaning that when you’re faced with tough situations in matches, you know how to go on and win.

“There have been times in the season so far where we’ve been in precarious situations but we’ve been able to work our way out of it.”

With exciting young left centre Michael Kai heading home for personal reasons, the team has been dealt another blow with news that right centre Matt Evans – one of the more experienced players in the side – suffered an ankle injury in the win over Souths.

“Matt looks to be out for around 4-6 weeks. It is a huge blow to us, especially in attack,’’ Payten said.

“We’re looking forward to getting Jesse Sue, Curtis Sironen and Marika Koroibete back the week after our bye.”
 
Kai looked like a champion in the 2 games I saw him play in, his combination with koroibete was looking very promising. Hope things improve for him and he can get back down to Sydney later in the season.
