LIVE GAME Trial 1 v Manly

Live Game Discussion
Geez it's a bloody trial. Not much difference in the first half between the two sides.
Have to agree. The first half with mostly the NRL players on the field was pretty close considering we had 2 or 3 disallowed tries which was a little bit unlucky. A couple of Cherry Evans freaky kicks totally changed the momentum of the game when we were looking like getting the upper hand at one stage. Unfortunately there was nothing unlucky about some of the soft tries that we conceded which was pretty disappointing and really expected some sort of improvement over the off season in that department.

Second half was just a rabble with lots of unknowns having a bit of a hit up running around without too much organization or structure and always looked like being a blowout the longer it went on.

To be perfectly honest it's only a trial and I would prefer to get touched up to drive home our short comings than win by 50 like we did last year and come away thinking we were world beaters like some on here thought at the time.

Arrgh.

Look maybe they told the players not to muscle up which makes sense for a trial game.
But to me this means 2021 = 2022. If we have been muscling up on defense in the off season then we should have seen grunt. I hope they have told to treat it as a trial and not get injured.....
If were like this* round 6, we need to fire Madge. Flanno or Cameron Ciraldo would be fine.
*by this I mean conceding soft tries.

The first half after DCE 4020. Should the play have been stopped for pauga injury?
Apparently refs can’t stop play anymore for injuries with the exception of head knocks or unless they deem the injury serious

No idea what Paugas injury was as I couldn’t watch the game

Of course they can’t. We can’t slow down the speed of the game.

So it's the refs discretion as to whether an injury is deemed serious? Geez I can't see this being a balls-up at all🙄. No doubt there will be certain teams who coincidentally get beneficial calls on the supposed severity of injury to suit the narrative. Gonna be a train wreck

Can't take much out of game, owing to so many new faces and the difficulty forming a game plan for so many players. The one thing that stood out, was Manlys size and speed compared to us, they were imposing to say the least.

Was I watching a different game? realistically this game went for 40mins only, the second half was a reserve grade hit out so really should be taken with a grain of salt.

I felt we had the upper hand for about 80% of that first half against almost a full strength top 4 manly side featuring the current freak Dally M player of the year. Taking into account two of their tries came from an incredibly poor Pauga defensive read (which I would assume is our depth centre at best) and a try off the wing when we were a man down adding to that we had a few tries disallowed that really could have gone either way.

First hit out of the year without our star playmaker in terrible conditions and I actually think we played quite well.

- Starford To a looked solid and wouldn't mind seeing him get some time at centre to pip Roberts for round 1
- Very nice signs from young Logen Dillon, looked slick in attack - will need some defensive work but a nice prospect
- Gildart didn't get much opportunity but looked comfortable, thought he looked physically bigger than shown in training photos which was a concern for many.
- Really glad to see Luciano having a red hot crack despite moving on from the club
- Tuilagi looked solid

So for a practice game...surely it's not so doom and gloom as people are making it.

My take is that at this point we are relying on him being a ball distributor at lock but I worry we will get rolled up the middle. I think we have to wait and see how he goes prior to writing the signing off.
Earl there wasn't a problem 'D' in the first half [which resembled close to a run on side minus Laurie AD etc] having Peach ball playing, in fact we were really solid up the middle against a very big pack.
Our problem was either on the edges or out wide.
The first try, Noffa went too low close to the line and another Kekma was on the ground injured. In the first half [not including a tearaway Tom Terrific] we should have been leading.
For some reason our men at the back allowed ball to bounce which was about the only real serious flaw in our game.
The second half was a game of touch footy from our young boys who were lost.
I'm actually happy with the first half 'trial'

I liked taipari a lot as well, he has speed and is nippy on his feet

Hugeee fan of the number 9 hooker, we definetly can't let him go

Dillon had glimpses of brilliance... he danced around the shit trobjevic brother with ease ,

Toa looked great as well

Looking forward to next weeks game, anyone know time and date?

Trials have no real insight into the season. We flogged Manly last year. I think we struggle this year anyway but I was impressed by the young hooker in the second half. Made mistakes but had crisp service and a tough kid.

Didn't show it last night 💔
Yea bit dissapointed

Needs a full year in cup imo

Better centre than FB

Tupou has all the physical traits as well but has a lot of learning

The intresring thing there is that any of those boys in the 2nd half could play FG this year depending on how covid goes

Pretty much lol, the NRL would have to be the most reactive sport in the world to rule changes. How many other codes would change about 5 rules a year?

Prior to this year trainers could alert the referee and they had to stop the game. That won’t happen anymore
The game is unrecognisable from the game 15-20 years ago. Its sad being able to watch an NFL or NBA game from 30 years ago and it’s the exact same game. Not with this game. This obsession with making the game as fast as possible is turning it to garbage.

Tupou was quite weak imo.
Lots to work on but looks capable and very physically able.
