Match Report: NSW Cup Trial vs Wentworthville

Wests Tigers have been defeated 26-4 by the Wentworthville Magpies tonight at Kirkham Oval in the first NSW Cup trial match of 2015.
Some of the best young talent from the Club was on show, including a host Under 20s players who lined up for their first taste of senior football.
Five players that are yet to even play a Holden Cup match for the Club featured for Wests Tigers: Mark McCormack, Te Kapua Murray, JJ Felise, Junior Tatola and Jacob Liddle.
It was a tough opening period to the match with plenty of big hits, most-notably a bone-rattler from Wests Tigers centre Watson Heleta on Wentworthville fullback Adam Quinlan, who lost control of possession as a result.
Wentworthville were first to post points in the match with centre Ben Crooks crossing on their left edge off the back of a well-worked backline shift. The conversion was successful from the Magpies, making it 6-0 after 18 minutes.
Parramatta enjoyed a wealth of possession and field position towards the backend of the first half, with the Wests Tigers defensive line eventually cracking in the 38th minute when halfback Zack Docker-Clay scored with a nice show and go.
Wests Tigers went into the break trailing 10-0; however there were some promising signs for the second half from the youthful side consisting primarily of Under 20s players.
A fresh Wentworthville side entered the game in the second half, having almost an immediate impact as backrower Zeb Tawha hit a second man play and crossed for a try on the 43-minute mark.
Winger Henry Raiwalui extended Wentworthville’s lead out to 18-0 soon after, reeling in a cut-out pass and stepping two defenders to score near the posts.
Wests Tigers were denied what looked to be a try in the 49th minute, with Te Maire Martin throwing a looping cut-out ball to winger Te Kapua Murray who followed it up with what was called a forward pass back on the inside to Heleta.
Martin made no mistake in the 58th minute, throwing an excellent pass at the line to backrower Wesley Lolo, who hit the hole perfectly and scored near the posts. Wentworthville’s lead was cut to 18-4 just before the third quarter interval.
Wentworthville enjoyed a wealth of possession to open the final quarter of the match, with Wests Tigers’ defence holding strong before the line was eventually broken by halfback Jack Madden in the 66th minute to extend the Magpies lead to 22-4.
With four minutes remaining in the match, Wentworthville crossed for another try and extended their lead to 26-4, which would prove to be the final score of the match.

Agreed we certainly used this as a trial and the 9s was used by us as as glorified trial matches.Finally looking forward to seeing some of our bigger names get a run next week.

I was there, don't take anything away from two pretty strong Eels teams.
Looks like some good prospects in the lower grades, they just need time.

Worth noting that of all the players WT used across both games, only 5 aren't eligible for NYC this season! 2 very, very young squads.
**In NYC:**
This was about our 4th string side and it showed. Forwards were completely dominated and there looked to be no communication or cohesion in defence. The standout was definitely Mapesone, a big boy from Keebra. Ran very hard and one of the few forwards to bend the line.
They were basically outgunned by a more experienced and cohesive team. Parra looked like they had players who've played together a fair bit, and were often bigger than us physically too. They would make it down to our tryline off almost every set they had, whereas we could barely make 30-40m then kick.
Fullback was a huge problem, a few players tried out there and in the end it was the 5/8 who did the best job. One of the centres was there and must have let 4-5 kicks bounce a metre in front of him, nearly all of which led to tries to the opposition.
However, apart from the 13 players who played NSW Cup we were also without about another 10 regular nyc players. So these were a lot of our 25-40 squad members. You add the wheelhouse boys, sirronen, woods, cerruto, satterthwaite, marshall king etc and there's a very decent squad there!
Karhwin's stats on the WT website are definitely wrong. He looks athletic but not as big as his stats suggest. Probably about 190cm and 90 something kgs. We never made a break through the backs all game so its impossible to tell how fast anyone is.
Also Hala Masila went to hospital at the end of the first half. Was hard to tell what was wrong, but he was done for a while. Maybe just a concussion.
**NSW Cup:**
Considering 5 of the 18 players named were fresh out of school and had never even played nyc before it showed how raw the team really was. A solid effort but were again outgunned by a more developed team.
Tatola is certainly a man mountain, he'll destroy NYC and was the yongest player on the field (and the biggest). Felise worked hard. Liddle looked very sharp out of dummy half. Murray never really saw any ball but did look fast. McCormack is tall but needs to fill out more for that level.
Again our forwards were heavily dominated by a more experienced pack and so our halves and backs never had any space all match. Heleta looked good in patches. Martin set up 2 tries but never had much space to work with. Seve never got the ball but played both centre and wing. Graham was pretty solid.
We also dropped a lot of ball. Parra/Wenty must have had 65% possession on both NYC and NSW Cup. Territory was also firmly in their favor. In the 3rd and fourth quarters even more NYCboys got a go. At one point there were 5 teenagers in a scrum Once again add Cherrington, Lovett, Drinkwater, Luani, Fine, Rowe and a couple more forwards and the team should be fine!
All things considered it was a good effort by the NSW Cup boys, and some promising signs for the future. Hopefully getting a taste of the speed of a higher level will help them when they drop back to NYC and a number of these boys might play half a season or more in nsw cup in any case..!

Seve went off 90 seconds into the second half. Couldn't see exactly what was wrong, had a slight limp, but then came back out and played left wing in the final quarter so couldn't have been too bad.
Hala Masila from NYC went to hospital for something, not sure how serious. Not in the top 17 in all likelihood in any case. Interesting as he signed with the Dogs last year but he too seemingly reneged on his deal to stay with his mates at the Tigers.

My mistake, in an earlier post i said it was Mapesone who was the standout. The names and numbers on the teamsheet where in fact wrong and the standout player was in fact Tiawharangi Aranui.
Miles ahead of any other player in a WT jersey on the day.
