The issue is that the NRL have invested a fair sum of money to promote and televise these trials, so they want to recover a little revenue via ticket sales.
You will notice of course that trials used to be entirely independently organised by clubs without any coverage at all, but the NRL has recognised that there is a lot of pre-season promotional capacity to professionally manage the trial schedule and broadcasting.
Whilst I agree with your sentiment about letting members in free, we need to remember that ticketed membership is a season ticket with the club and not an NRL subscription, so if the NRL are propping up the trials they would not see a buck from members.

Trials should always be free and used as a marketing tool [roarstore] and for a membership drive.

Liam and Gibbsy, what characters, great on and off the field.
Didn't they go into a vending machine business together?
They were always playing pranks on other players.
There was one prank that got way out of hand though, can't remember now what it was dam it.
Liam copped a few head knocks and retired prematurely and Gibbs was low balled and went to Cronulla, same with Fafita in his prime.

IMO it will be irrelevant. Typically these trials (especially the first trial) will be running out everyone fit (Apparently Hastings wont play), so they will probably run out around 20-25 players
