WESTS TIGERS LEAD COWBOYS 22-4 IN TRIAL
By Wayne Cousins
Friday, 12 February 2010

Wests Tigers have turned in a solid defensive display early in their first NRL trial for 2010.

In a match being played on a very wet field in Mackay, North Queensland enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening 20 minutes but the defence of the Wests Tigers was very strong.

Both sides remain scoreless at the end of the first quarter.

Wests Tigers opened their account in the 43rd minute when full-back Jake Mullaney scored his first try in the top grade after good lead up work by prop Junior Moors. Mullaney converted the try for a 6-4 lead.

Four minutes later, a change of angle in a strong run saw Moors score. Mullaney converted for a 12-4 lead.

Two minutes later, some fine lead up work by hooker Chris Corby saw Englishman Mark Flanagan score his first try for Wests Tigers. Mullaney converted the try for an 18-4 lead.

It became 22-4 when Flanagan scored his second try from a kick by half-back Blake Lazarus. The score remained that way at three quarter time.

Wests Tigers Recruitment Manager Warren McDonnell says the field is a quagmire.

“It is a terrible night and the game is being played in thick mud.It is a quagmire.

“It is a forwards game. There has been plenty of drop ball and it just all defence,'' McDonnell said..

“The Cowboys have enjoyed a few repeat sets. We didn’t get out of half until eight minutes into the match.

“Bryce Gibbs, centres Geoff Daniela and Jake Clarke and hooker Daniel Fitzhenry are going well. Fitzhenry is doing plenty of work in defence in the middle.

McDonnell added there were no injuries to date.

Sounds like good news. We don't often win trials. Good going by those playing there tonight. Must be near fulltime?

I thoght Bryce was suspended???

does a suspension count in trial games? not sure but don't think so

plus gibbs is fighting for a place in the 17,
personally i could do without the constant penalties he always gives away

I wonder if Arana Taumata got on the field and how he went, hopefully a full report coming soon

"Corby is going well at dummy half, Arana Taumata has added plenty of spark and Moors and Flanagan have been very good."

Hmmmm…no Fitzy at hooker anymore.. no surprise.
Taumata and Lazarus are much better than Lui in the halves..

Sounds like a nice neat first hit out for the year. Teams were evenly matched and we beat them on their turf, only let in one try. Im sure the 4 quarter game would have broken up each sides attacking momentum. Good to hear Bryce got man of the match honours. I think he is in for a massive year.. I wonder if he played the full 80\. Sound like Moors & Flanagan impressed.

Sounds like a good first hit out in tough gritty conditions. Good defensive effort and still managed to score some tries. Good start to season 2010! :sign:

Good stuff, Tigers! :wahoo:

So happy that Blake got through unscathed.

Somebody on here is going to be pretty happy with that last try!!!!
