TV series that you couldn't miss...(not Netflix)

Going a little back in time here, folks, before Netflix was a thing...

Hard for me to go past The Wonder Years.
"The greatest Boomer nostalgia project of them all, before Boomer nostalgia threatened to overwhelm the entire world."
and "Hill St Blues" - the cop show that started it all, IMHO.

But the least could go on and on, for sure!

Couldn’t get enough of Game of Thrones - I can remember spending every Sunday night searching online for leaks and reading through forums and subreddits linked to the show. Dexter was the other. The season with John Lithgow was my favourite, I couldn’t wait to see how they would handle the storyline. Plus it was so different from anything else at the time.
The showrunners completely ruined both, am yet to do a rewatch of either.

Bluestone 42. Not sure it was aired here though. It is a British sitcom about an Ordnance Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) detachment in Afghanistan during Operation Herrick. It ran for three series and is a modern Blackadder. While some of the acting is a little over the top, the traits depicted are exactly what soldiers are like on operations and the EOD scenes are pretty close to the mark. It was running at the same time the Brits were in Afghan and the last season was aired to coincide with the conclusion of Herrick. I'm pretty sure if you liked the WWI Blackadder series you will enjoy Bluestone 42. It hit a nerve for me as an Engineer EOD Tech and had me in tears from both the comedy and the "reality".

100% Lauren. I would have had both on my list but they completely screwed up the final seasons of both.

Dexter particularly could have been the greatest show ever made had they run it a bit differently. The main problem I had with it was that he took out the antagonist at the end of each season.
His brother Bryan, Miguel Prado and the Trinity Killer were great characters. They were well written, and given fascinating storylines. They were also killed off too conveniently. The cat and mouse games Bryan played, Trinity taking out Dexters wife and Prado manipulating him whilst pretending to be his friend could have all gone on for multiple seasons, possibly crossing over as they all existed in the same universe. I also would have kept the FBI Serial Killer hunter alive so Dexter had to deal with all 4 of them over many years.
Also, Miami Metro had to catch him by the end. He killed 150 people during the show and got away with it. Pathetic writing.

Can't believe I forgot that storyline 😥Miguel Prado was exciting, very cunning. Personally thought Brian Moser was the most intriguing character.

Seasons 1-4 were sooo good for television... both shows. Joffrey Baratheon and The Trinity Killer are still my favourite TV villains. Season 4 was peak television IMO - the shock value from The Red Wedding and what happened to Rita 😱

I haven't read the Dexter book series but saw online that, like Game of Thrones, they somewhat deviated away from the source material, which isn't a bad thing on its own. But with the buildup of plotlines, they still had a great concept to work with. Your ideas sound heaps better 😂

Oh Doakes was a good character too. Found him and their dynamic (Dexter's) funny.

The Wonder Years was a mad show.
Interesting thread.
The streaming service has essentially killed the anticipation of watching a show each week and everyone talking about it, looking forward to what happens in the next episode the following week.

I find myself not even bothering with new shows and waiting until they're complete to just watch them all at once.

Back in the days though....
As @Moh said, Prisonbreak was great.
Re watched it when they did a new season for Netflix and it's aged well, good nostalgia for me.

SBS Monday nights had a wild line up including a cracker show, HBO's Oz. That show was dark.

Also liked shows like Law and Order SVU, Cold Case and CSI.

Going back even further, Degassi the next Generation, original Heartbreak High and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
