I think Sambo is generally considered a form of wrestling... but all that does sound fancy
Sure, but some people consider BJJ a form or wrestling and other s lump it all in as grappling.

What it boiled down to is American wrestling is the best on your feet. it and judo are based on getting your opponent to the ground and after that.....meh. BJJ doesnt care how you get your opponent to the ground but will kill them once they are there. Sambo I would say is a good mix of both. TBH i dont think there is much between Sambo and BJJ in modern martial arts, Sambo has obviously taken a lot from BJJ.

Yep, all true.
Sambo has some judo elements too, throws and whatnot.

All very entertaining when done by high level practitioners.

All important within the aspect of MMA, both offensively and defensively.

Amazing sport.

True, but remember that Jiu Jitsu in japan was originally a form of Judo. Obviously once Maeda travelled to Brazil, the Gracies developed it in to BJJ. Would be interesting (I dont know) to understand how it got to that Russia to become Sambo.

Yes that’s true but this organisation is the worst of the lot as it’s full of drug cheats, a lot of which are psycho animals.
There is barely a sportsman among them.
This isn’t fighting.
You a Sonny Bill fan hey😂

Granted the UFC blokes are no Justin Hodges but then again who is?🤷‍♂️

There isnt a wrestler in the world that could match it with Ryan or any top tier BJJ, it is the difference between wrestling and BJJ. Not saying BJJ is better, thye are just different sports and once it hits the ground the BJJ guy wins and no one gets close to Ryan.

you would need an elite striker to beat Ryan and it would need to be early because Ryan excels at managing distance. IMO Muay Thai is the premium striking art to counter BJJ because of the capacity to match or beat BJJ in managing distance.

Agreed, but he is singlehandedly monetising BJJ. Bringing it into the marketplace and making it an event. I love, train and compete BJJ but the first to acknowledge that unless you fight, its a boring sport to watch. Ryan has managed to bring money into the sport with the UFC including his fights as PPV.

Maybe....the Dagestanis are good, again IMO because they have stayed true to what they excel at. Gets back to the point I was making with oily. In the heavyweights, they are mostly strikers because as the weight/power increases in humans, the capacity to not get knocked out doesnt.
Tell Khabib BJJ trumps wrestling

I think HW is probably the worst division currently.

The Dagestanis are great, indeed.
Love the pressure they can dish out with the wrestling.

The wrestling took out a legit BJJ threat when we saw Islam VS Oliveira.
Even though they're not as good in striking the wrestling threat neutralises the opponents stand up game.

He controls position. BJJ wouldn't do shit.
Seriously hilarious 🤣🤣 🤪 🤣

Gordon Ryan hasnt lost against the worlds greatest grapplers for over 7 years. Undefeated for 57 straight fights. He has only lost twice in the last 10 years. Won 2022 ADCC World championship in open and weight division, won 2019 ADCC World Championship open and weight division, 2018 IBJJF World Champion, 2017 ADCC World Champion, 2016 EBI Champion, 2015 IBJJF World Champion and he is 40kg heavier than Khabib.....but yeah Khabib would "control position".

Hey @Tucker what do you like about this post? I see you liking the same poster and Just curious mate. Like, do you believe that the high level grappling of Ryan plus his obvious size / strength would neturalise the Dagestan Sambo, or maybe you think the Sambo developed by Abdul and taught to his students is some hybrid combat sambo so pure grappling wouldn’t allow khabib to getting close to controlling position?

Interested in your take.

It’s all about gas tank. Guy (Ryan) would be way too anaerobic to last five rounds

I don’t have a take.
Both styles of fighting bore me enough that I haven’t studied either.
I liked the post because that man’s cv impressed me.

Great. I feel better. Can sleep better tonight. Life makes sense now.

Jesus, the whole discussion started with the premise about 5 rounds. You do realise that ADCC which Ryan is open champion of is no rounds and between 10m to 30min time limit? Ryan v Pena lasted 44minutes!

Whilst it is 5 rounds, Ryan will not fight UFC or MMA, because it specifically excludes high level grapplers. It takes time to set up submissions against elite fighters. The gas tank is a big part of the reason why BJJ elite would win without timed rounds. BJJ elite (and the top Sambo guys for that matter) are experts at forcing an opponent into positions where their opponent is struggling and they could rest.

5 Rounds suits strikers not BJJ elite. BJJ elite can last longer aerobically than strikers.
