UNWANTED North Queensland head coach Neil Henry says he will happily take a demotion to an assistant's role if it means staying involved with an NRL club.

Henry yesterday ruled out moving to the Super League in Britain or to the football department of any other code.

"I still want to coach in some capacity in the NRL," he told The Australian last night.

"I want to see what's available within the NRL. If that meant being an assistant coach at a club, that's fine.

"I just want to be involved with footy full-time."

It has been a highly emotional week for Henry. Last Sunday he was told his contract would be terminated at season's end. Then he learned of the death of his friend and former coaching partner in Townsville, Graham Murray.

Then on Saturday night the 13th-placed Cowboys caused one of the upsets of the season by knocking over competition leader South Sydney 30-12.

Centre Brent Tate felt it was the Cowboys' best game this year.

"It's been the challenge for us all year to put that kind of performance up," Tate told Triple M radio. "(Saturday) I thought probably was the first time this year that we've really clicked as a unit.

"Performances like that back-to-back will give us every opportunity of making the finals."

The Cowboys have three of their last five matches at home, which might help.

But first up next weekend is Penrith away.

Henry has no manager to search for him but is determined to stay with coaching rather than return to teaching.

"**There's been a few clubs that have indicated they are looking at reviewing their staff structure but I've not spoken to anybody yet," he said. Gold Coast and Wests Tigers are two clubs having a rethink about their staff and programs.**

Henry, assistant coach to Mal Meninga in the early years of Queensland's eight-year State of Origin reign, said he wanted to get straight back on the horse rather than take a year off to rest. He's been coaching since 1999 when he took on Canberra's SG Ball side.

"I'm fresh enough and a change of scenery will make me even fresher.

"I happen to believe, despite all that's gone on, that coaching is one of the best jobs you can have - I enjoy it that much."

Former Test winger Tate said the players had the utmost respect for Henry since the club tapped him on the shoulder.

"I want to give a huge wrap to Neil the way he handled the week with class," said Tate.

"He prepared us really well and we were up for the Souths win and we needed it."

While North Queensland emerged unscathed, Penrith lost two forwards, Adam Docker and Sika Manu, with broken hands in the first half of their hefty 42-6 loss to the Sydney Roosters.

The Panthers are already reeling without Brad Tighe (knee), Matt Robinson (neck) and Nigel Plum (collarbone).

Cronulla centre Ben Pomeroy will need to pass concussion tests this week before he is cleared to play Newcastle on Saturday.

Luke Lewis (calf) must also pass a fitness test to face the Knights.

Contrary to reports that Lewis's shoulder would end his season early, a spokesman for Cronulla said yesterday "nothing could be further from the truth".

Get us Hagan and Henry NOW as our assistant coaches with Folkes back in as our S & C coach

I like that idea we need to clean out the lot from assistant coaches to medical staff . I would like to see folkes as our defence coach he brought steel into our defence

Potter to be given his own selection of staff first for 2014.

I want to see if what he can do with an off season and his own team structure and playing style before he gets someone like Henry waiting in the wings. These situations give "Would be if they could be" Supporters, Journos and Boards itchy trigger fingers.

Dont get me started on how dumb it is to even consider the likes of Trent Barrett to take over after this horror year.

I reckon it's safe to say we'll see a couple of new faces in the coaching department next season here. Potter will have his own ideas and the club should give him the support to make that happen. For all problems Potter has faced, he's also done it with staff inherited from the Sheens era which given his late arrival meant this was the best way to go for this season.

The one thing we will really need with a youthful squad (particularly with a young spine ) is good a technical coach

Anyone is league will tell you that Hagan is one of the best technical coaches available

Add to that Henry has worked closely with Hagan at SOO level for Qld for many years they already have a great working partnership

And no ,Im not saying that as a Qlder , I'm saying that as a Wests Tigers supporter who sees where our deficiencies will lay over the next 18 months

hagan please give yourself an all mighty uppercut you goose lol hagan really

Coaching wise he is probably the main reason Qld has won 8 series straight and Mal Meninga will quite happily concede that

He is the brains of the operation

Donald Duck could coach that team. Big no to Hagan

Yeah , its only three biggest rugby league games on the world calender every year

Just because NSW picks nuffies to coach means that Qld do likewise

Come on Happy. If NSW had Smith, thurston, Cronk, slater and inglis do you think it would be 8 series in a row? Forget the coaching, it's just a tremendous team.

A team of champions still needs to be turned into a champion team Furious

The players don't do that

A team needs to stay motivated during this sort of run

The players don't do that

A team of champions still needs a game plan that will succeed and to be evolving ,the game has changed so much since this dynasty began

The players don't do that

I'm not denying having arguably the greatest spine ever in rugby league history helps , but when things are not going right on field ( and many games have been in the balance going into the last 40 of game 3) you need someone refocus on what they need to change to win

I don't know exactly what role you think I want Hagan to do , but I want him to come up with a game plan that is simple to follow and effective ,yes Hagan has had stories about a reported lack of man management skills but he wont have a great deal to with the side bar the occasional chat with players

It will still be the man management skills of Potter to implement the game plan in a effective manner

Apart from the grammar (or lack of it) I agree. I want Rick Stone here; Bennett hasn't improved the Newcastle side very much since Stone was dumped.

Stick with Potter, he has a plan….
Sooky players will be gone next year.
We'll go better/

We'll, if thurston cronk Inglis etc. Are so good how come they don't have a world cup yet?
Team of champions doesn't mean a champion team

Well he would have to be…..Meninga the simpleton is hardly a towering intellect. We saw how great of a coach Mal was when he just had a run of the mill team at the Raiders, he was cod-ordinary and finished up with getting the sack IIRC.
A good team will coach themselves, anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

It would be worthwhile to have Henry or Hagan as an assistant coach but as someone previously stated, Potter may be reluctant to have someone auditioning for the head-coaching position beside him but he has to not worry about that and just try and build the best support team around himself that he can.
