DRAGONS GAME SWITCHED FROM SCG TO SFS
22/06/2011 1:57:18 PM
Wests Tigers wish to advise Members and fans that the Round 22 clash against St George-Illawarra Dragons will now be played at the Sydney Football Stadium.

The match was originally scheduled for the Sydney Cricket Ground to co-incide with the 50 year anniversary of the 1961 Grand Final played between Wests and St George at the iconic venue.

However due to the match now being scheduled on Friday, August 5, Wests Tigers Chief Executive Stephen Humphreys admitted the Club had to revise its match day plans.

“We were hopeful of hosting this match on a Sunday afternoon so we could provide a great day of entertainment for our supporters,'' Humphreys said.

"Friday night games impose really tight timeframes for supporters to get to the venue and therefore from a fan’s perspective, a Friday night game becomes less about the pre-match entertainment and all about the game itself.

“As a result of this, we’ve needed to downscale the pre-match entertainment plans which were so integral to the original decision to host the match at the SCG. With all of that in mind, we have now transferred the match to the SFS which is such a great venue to watch Rugby League at.”

Humphreys added the Club remained committed to paying homage to the great rivalry between Wests and St George experienced in the early sixties.

“We will be hosting a lot of past players from that golden era at the match and our NRL team will proudly wear the Wests heritage jersey on the night,'' he said.

“We will do everything we can to secure a Sunday afternoon slot for the corresponding fixture over the next couple of years to enable us to celebrate this particular phase of the Club’s history on a more comprehensive scale than we are able to deliver on this occasion.”

Wests Tigers will advise Members, sponsors and other key parties of the changes in due course.

Smeg one problem with everything you just said,Humphreys simply rings the mug at nine married to leila mckinnon and request sunday game(As they have every time for balmain)this is a sunday game for sure.
The scg **** compared to sfs for footy viewing but the nostalgia once a year at scg is superb.

The Sunday game is 4th choice for TV.

If 9 passed on it for Friday you could guarantee it would have been a Monday night game as after the two Friday nighters Fox gets next pick for Monday. Its the reason why Dragons V Sea Eagles is Monday night this week as they held off in the hope of getting it for Sunday.

Smeg no disrespect intended as youre an intelligent and respectful guy but :blah :blah :blah

Balmain got the sunday gig every year first year wests try and its thanks but no thanks.

The press release I posted was from the NRL who inform the clubs about the same time it is issued. It was only available because someone on another forum has access to media only press releases.

I wouldn't be too harsh on the club for the slight delay

No offence taken.

Simply put though Wests Tigers V St George Illawarra in August is a far more coveted TV prize than Wests Tigers V Souffs in July

Couple of things:

- I thought Sunday 4pm was the 5th choice. 3rd and 4th are Monday night and Saturday 5.30pm respectively.
- Manly probably hoped for the Sunday match, but I think channel 9 brushed them because Wests v Canterbury will generate higher ratings on free-to-air than Manly v Dragons. The whole greater west, where pay tv take up is not high, will be watching the game.
- Given channel 9 brushed it, Fox snapped it up for the Monday. Pay tv access does has a high concentration level on the north shore.

The 2008 anzac test was played on a friday night at the scg.. Very dissapointing indeed. I think WT should consider moving it to campbelltown seeing scg has been canned. WT havent played in wests heritage strip at campbelltown since 2008\. Why channel 9 wouldnt pursue the sunday arvo game is bizzare to me. Sunday at scg allows kids and fans to run on to ground after match. Isnt the same on a cold dark nite at the sfs.

No complaints here I have the Friday off work and was due to work on the Sunday. SFS is a much better venue anyway hate watching footy at the SCG.

Bring it. Will have our full strength team by then and will smash a tiring Dragons outfit who have peaked too early.

Theyre contracted to play 4 games at sfs/scg combined.

Well done NRL just allowing the games hisory to be swept aside in favour of ratings.

there are a few unfair claims flying around in this thread directed at the WT.
These are the facts:

1 - Wests Tigers asked the NRL for the Sunday game because they wanted to celebrate the Magpie tradition
2 - Channel 9 made the decision for it to be held on the Friday
3 - The club felt that all the effort being put into the SCG pre-game stuff would go to waste with a 7.30pm Friday kickoff as most people don't get there until just before kickoff

While it's pretty clear that it was Concord's decision to move the ground, I think considering the circumstances they made the right and rational decision.

Where did WTs ask for the Sunday?
I heard humpty i'viewed this arvo, he didnt say that.
They hoped….all they can do.

Here are the REAL facts 1.Stephen Humphreys makes a token phone call to channel nine thanking them for having the tigers souths at scg on sunday for last 5 years and it would be great if the tigers get sunday status next year when it reverts to balmain again because as a 50%jv partner they should get it 6 out of 7 years.
2.Channel 9 are made out as scapegooats for this disgrace.
3.the club felt oh stuff it for pre game its ONLY WESTS.IF IT WAS RYDE EASTWOOD WE'D HAVE A 5 HOUR SPECTACULAR.

As the no 1 fan of moltzen kul you arent qualified to tell us what is right and rational.

At the start of the season I believe Ink.

Every club has a certain number of rquests on what fixtures they would like played when.

The broadcaster is of course under no duty to adhere to the requests

I recall last years souths tigers match at the scg did infact get chosen as the Monday night match, however the NRL intervened and made sure it was the Sunday game on fox.

Bottom line is, if channel 9 don't choose this as their number 1game, foxsports again would have snapped it up as the Monday night game. Not only would we have moved it to the sfs people would be complaining of another Monday night home game.

Humpty doesn't choose the tv schedule it's as simple as that, hence 1 game on a Sunday so far to date this year.

nah they lost in 09 on a friday night there. Not sure what the over-all win/loss record is against the Dragons at the SFS but i know they're not undefeated

@ink & mainly @magpie mania

you guys are both basing your claims on delusional and contrived assumptions with absolutely ZERO proof to back up what you are saying. You manipulate any situation or issue into an argument to suit your agenda.
My post above, on the other hand, is based on factual information that contradicts the negative spin and lies that people like yourselves post on this and other forums to feed your anti-Wests conspiracy theory.

grow up

i realise they still need to play the 4 games there. i am suggesting a swap of venue for the 4th campbelltown game back to the sfs.

spot on about honouring TV rating over History. Getting to the SFS on a friday night can be physically difficult plus it hinders people coming in from regional areas trying to get into sydney to see the special match. Yes i know its another WT game but these turn of events make it disappointing as a what the spectacle was all about in the first place
