OK video gamers, since we will be social distancing for a while I’m looking to buy a game console to help pass the time. Last video game I played was on the Wii, so I haven’t played any in quite a while. I also used to play Flight Simulator on a PC. Looking for Console / PC and game recommendations.

I was thinking of the Xbox digital edition but I am open to different options. Something the missus would enjoy as well.

Also what’s the go with on-line games? Yes I am ignorant when it comes to modern video gaming.

Do you have a desktop at home?

Sure do.

Legend.

Perhaps do a little googling on pub g. I'm playing that now.

Tons of NBA players like Ben Simmons play it

NBA 2k is really good

Downloaded it just the other day and tbh I don't really like it....NBA LIVE 19 is a lot better....the visuals are better and gameplay is better to

If you're into MMORPG then I'd recommend WOW. It's a game that runs on real time. A real world. Where you choose a class of character and upgrade his levels until you hit max and then you can PvP or PvE & keep upgrading your gear.

Wow is hella addictive though. I used to play 10 hours straight with about half a dozen of my real life friends. They say wow is the online crack...haha

Can confirm about WoW being online crack... Only play like 3-4hrs max these days but the 10hr sessions bring back memories

I was a pretty decent gamer until my son was born, now I barely play. Red Dead Redemption is good, GTA 5, Borderlands and Battlefield.

No mate don't get the digital, it puts you out of the used disc market, which is potentially very good via ebay and the like. If you go digital you are committed to only buying games directly from Microsoft, and whilst they do have great sales periodically, there's no second-hand market for digital-only

If you can afford it, or a deal comes along, get an Xbox One X, the top-range one. The price difference isn't mad and it will give you the most bang for the longest, even when the new Xbox comes around in 2021. The XB1X will outcompete the PS4 Pro performance on basically any game, simply because it's a higher-power machine.

I don't play games online so much, but if you do, you need a monthly subscription called Xbox Live Gold, I think it's AUD 10.99 per month basic (Xbox Live is free, you need the free one because you need an account on your machine).

Then what you do is you jump on ebay and watch the Microsoft webpage, wait for the sales. You can get a lot of common games for $5-20 via ebay (delivery included), particularly if it's ubiquitous. Like I said, MS will do deals periodically and at times they are v. good deals.

PS4 Pro is good too, I have both machines, the main diff being PS has more exclusive games, so if you are hellbent on playing some specific game that's specific to PS4, you'll need to take that into account. Vast majority of games are dual-system.

But I've mostly played my Xbox since December 2019, which is when I bought it. I bought the PS4 with gift cards about 3 months ago. Prior to that I was a lapsed gamer - I used to play a lot as a teenager and in my 20s, then almost stopped playing entirely when my kids were born - didn't have time.

Once I got back into it, it's great, there's really nothing like a really well produced and engaging game, as good as any book or TV show.

Right now I'm playing Assassin's Creed Origins and it's really good - a bit of an older, I got it for only $18 on Amazon AU about a year ago. But older games hold their age much better than they used to, when I was a kid, a game would be almost obsolete in technology within a few years, whereas now they hold up well for longer.

Other top-class games I played the balls out of the past ~1.5 years:
Red Dead Redemption II
Subnautica - probably my fave game so far this console generation
Middle Earth Shadow of War
FIFA 18

I also like buying indie games, they often go cheap on digital and you are supporting the little guys to make labours of love.

Each to their own but I don’t get buying hard copies, the resale value is ordinary. It depends how many games you play and how many people play them.

We have switch, PS4, xbox and gaming laptops (5 kids and 2 adults play) - I use to go all in back in the day on Counter Strike mixed with Civ - yeah strange.

These days its Fifa, nba, fortnite, madden, Rainbow, PvZ, goat simulator, mortal kombat, sonic or mainly on the playstation spiderman vr is the craze atm. You can get most of the old games on xbox via the monthly subsection plus free games on top of that each month. The sony package isn’t as good. We get the value out of it easily compared to buying discs.

Switch we may buy games like Mario Kart, Splatoon and Mario Maker due to storage - switch isn’t as user friendly on the cloud gaming market.
