Walker Brothers

I know we have talked about this before.. I just like them, no not even them just the idea of them…

We are not going to beat the top teams playing their style. We don't compete with them in any side of the rugby league franchise.. Managers, training equipment, coaches, players, sponsors, crowd, members, health supplement programs, brown paper bags for referees.

Paying their support coaches to be our head coach to play a style of game with less skilled players is never going to work.

For those who have not heard of them, They are ex NRL players who have been coaching part time / semi pro football team Ipswich jets with success.

They have a unique style called contract football in which you have a duty to pass the football to somebody who is in a better position to you.

This has them moving the ball from one side of the field to the other and having two or three attacks at the opposition defensive line on each tackle.

The main point of this is to not have up to three defenders in each tackle and not get into a wrestle situation allowing quick play the balls and playing attack of that.

It is exciting football to watch that requires players to have good hands in higher pressure situations.

People will say undoubtably that this will lead to more handling errors, however this style of football worked well with part time footballers they don't get paid to go to training everyday.

Because we know that we cannot play in the same style as the top teams and win consistently should we not adapt a different style? Remembering that in 2005 that is exactly what we did... we had smaller guys playing to a faster style of football. The exciting style at least bought us fans, which increased our crowds, that then became the basis of us being in the upper echelon of member holders. Even if we aren't immediately successfully, wouldn't it least pick up the morale of a team playing an attacking style of football (something our boys want to play) not learning how the roosters play by there assistant coach for less money???

Really, at this point what is there to lose? Surely the rest of Taylors contract can't be worth that much.,

i'd take Sheens back, get rid of Farah and Dene first though.

He is what we need, the squad is completely different to the one he left before, he was never a bad coach just was here too long.

In saying that why would he want to come back, hes at salford on big dollars rn

If you understand the Walkers philosophy, it is pretty much the style we are playing now… allowing a fast game in the hope that when you have more ball in hand, you have more opportunities to capitalise on.

That just doesnt work. We lose the wrestle, we bunch in the middle to compensate for the ruck speed and get run around. Bulldogs did what had to be done perfectly tonight to counteract the Walkers style of game.

When you break it down, walkers arent innovators, they are Sheens immitators. We are where we are today because of ingrained Sheensisms.

except There are offloads… lots of them, which we don't do.

It is essentially the football that teams play when the are down by 20 with 10 to go.

I respectfully disagree its what we play now, we are very one out hit style for the first 4 tackles with very little ball movement when we get to the line, I would like to know how many offloads we have had compared to other teams if anyone is a stat guru.

The Ipswich Jets are currently coming 2nd last on the ladder for this year… Not thinking their style can work once teams "figure them out"...

are you trying to say that our mob, which can barely catch a pass would excell in the only difference being more offloads? It would only amount to more errors.

The one out is a bit of a myth to be fair. This season we have had props passing before the line more than ever before, which is close enough to interchangable with offloads as well.

You are basically asking for a lower percentage version of what we are achieving because of ineptitude.

The original question was more, what we are doing, and have been trying to do for a few years now isn't working.

Taylor was an assistant coach, trying to implement what the head coach was doing, with worse cattle and less support.

I really liked Potters aggressive bench, not many teams were doing it and I thought it worked well..

I liked Sheens set plays, (before it became just going the blind side) Remember that scrum we went through the scrum to score… They worked and it is something we became known for.

I don't think what we are doing will succeed if we continue..

I agree that we do have the prop throw a short pass sometimes before we hit the line, but its hardly spreading the ball wider, and it usually still ends up with three in every tackle and we are involved in wrestle.

I'm alone in thinking the walker Brothers, that fine, I don't mind, however except for just broad suggestions of sack the coach, get rid of player x or y Im offering a suggestion that doesn't involve getting rid of a whole lot of contracted players leaving us with reserve footballers.

I'll put it forward to anybody in the forum here, what is the solution you have and why will it invoke the positive change that you want.

I believe if any coach has a way in which they think they can eliminate the wrestle and isolate defenders that will be a much better alternative to wither a) scrapping a whole team and starting again and b) continuing with our failing "structures" that we have now.

Bit of their stuff, id like to see it with first graders

One of the things that really helped them was that they had genuine speed out wide, and when the gaps opened up they were able to burn the defenders with speed.
Unlike us where we have plodders , or at best , average speed on our wings.
When we do accidently do find a winger with real pace, we can't wait to unload him to a team that can't wait to get him
Do we actually have an anti speed policy????
Teddy somehow evaded it so far, hope no one here notices that he's quick.

If the Walker bros were that good they.'d have been snapped up by another NRL club by now. Their style is innovative, but there's no way it could work at NRL level. Teams would figure them out quick smart. The key thing for the Walker bros would be if they had a plan B once teams work around their plan A, or are they just one trick ponies.

I don't believe any of this. We have a basically completely different team and we've had two coaches since that point.

One of our problems is that we have next to no attacking plays or skill that we use. It appears to be a coaching tactic that didn't come from Sheens. At the same time we also have major issues defensively. Our team has gone backwards significantly since JT got here.

It would be good to see some of those forwards we have (Woods, Siro, Grant, Ava, etc) actually try to offload. We have the pace to back up this game, but I wonder whether we have the fitness. This game also relies to some extent on fatigue from the opposition

I'd be happy with this for a try at least. Taylor isn't working out at all.

Our defense problems stem from little attack.
We don't wesr sides out and they have to much to throw at us.

Heard Taylor say attacking style only worked once. We we nealy won it in 10 and 11.

The Roosters defensive style will only work once too.
At the end of the day you look around and play a style suited to the type of players you have.
Taylors style will only work with say a Canterbury.
