Warren McDonnell ---> Bulldogs

Yes his main focus was Junior development…butI can't remember the last player outside our junior systems (pre-NYC)... Macca recruited that is actually still playing FG for us...he also had his favourites he pushed over others..bent over backwards for Keebra kids which so far have added nought to FG..

So good luck at the Dogs...

The Dogs don't recruit duds and he will be a big loss. His signing underlines how far our club as fallen and the next recruitment manager better be an absolute superstar.

Tony Williams????

Sorry Spartan - guess we think alike.

Out of interest, was it Macca who recruited Liddle from the Central Coast? Isn't there also talk of a good young five eighth recruited from Laurie Daley's hometown? I can't remember his name but he is in the Balmain SG Ball team next year.

Do you mean last player signed from outside Tigers/Magpies pathways before NYC? Jacob Liddle

or

Do you mean last player signed from outside the Wests Tigers NYC group into firsts? Josh Aloiai

In addition to Liddle, based on some research: Tom Bartley (Wollongong), Jai Doolan (Bowraville / St George SGB), Trent Pye (Central Coast), Rhys Sciglitano (Hills Bulls), Royce Tout (Gundagai),

I Mean any player of note recruited outside of our junior pathways then through NYC that has gone on to have an impact in First Grade for us for say the past 5 Years..I can name plenty who have disappeared into the ether

I won't even go into the Sheens Era..

All of whom will never play higher than NYC..?

So the only player in our top 25 that was recruited by McDonnell is possibly Liddle, who was the Australian schoolboys hooker so any scout worth his mustard would have seen him play…?

I agree with you but McDonnell job is to identify talent and get them to the club, our system than is responsible for developing that talent. Okay he is not going to get it right all the time and I guess plenty of kids choose high profile teams, but the people who run the system once they are at the club also have to be accountable for the lack of players making the big step from NYC. Although I think most clubs are lucky to get one player a year make the next step

I actually have no idea who Ronald did and did not recruit.

I was just engaging Geo in his thought experiment of "who did we recruit from outside?'", but I did not entirely understand his angle.

If Geo means junior pathways as in any kid not from Balmain or Wests or Keebra, I'd expect it has always been a fairly small pool as those 3 pathways are quite robust. McDonnell's only job was recruiting kids outside of Balmain/Wests/Keebra? If yes, how did he make it something fulltime?

So you mean kids not from Balmain or Wests or Keebra, brought to NYC who then played FG?

I would not imagine there are even many that fit the criteria of joining NYC from external, let alone go to FG.

Liddle is one for sure.
Buchanan came from StG NYC but not ours
Dom DeLouise Hoeter?
Matt Lodge qualifies.
You could make an argument for Mitch Moses because he was signed up by Parra before came to our SG Ball.
Brenden Santi came from Dogs NYC.
Ava almost qualifies as we picked him up out of Parra NYC, same as Aloiai.
Sitaleki Akauola came from Warriors systems to our NYC so he counts.
Koroibete qualifies.
Asipeli Fine came from Roosters NYC as did Jacob Miller.
Tim Molzten came from Terrigal so he qualifies.
Tim Simona qualifies via Blacktown to NYC.
Andrew and David Fifita qualify via Griffith via Blacktown.

So if those are more or less on the mark, who made an impact? Liddle, Lodge, Akauola not a total fleabag, Koroibete for sure, Moltzen, Simona, Andrew Fifita. Mitch Moses if you stretch the argument.

My earlier question stands though - McDonnell only ever worked with non-Balmain, non-Wests, non-Keebra signings BEFORE they finished NYC eligibility?

He had nothing to do with Koro, but Fifitas i'd say so.

I'd hazard a guess he may have had a role in recruiting players from other club's NYC squads. What else on earth could he be doing for a fulltime gig?

With Keebra i'm not sure exactly what the arrangement is, but we do recruiting for Keebra in NZ to some degree. Whether we pay Keebra to send a scout over to a trial, or Ronald went to NZ himself i don't know. Seve and Felise were Qlders and i think local boys so I don't think we would have recruited them.

Did he scout local areas to recruit for Balmain and Wests SG Ball and Matts too? Who knows.

And at some point he was also charge of recruitment and scouting across the entire club, got rolled back to juniors only again when someone cracked the hits with him.

Ronald also signed Sharron twice! Should have been moved on with Sheens rather than demoted to junior recruitment.
