Warren McDonnells resume

You can't expect every NYC player brought to the club to make the step up

I reckon if you got 2 out of every year that step up to the NRL it would be classed as a success

That's a pretty harsh assessment blackandwhite. Not EVERY U20s player can make it. That's why the NRL makes it compulsory for them to work/study at the same time. There are a few of our past 20s who have made it to firsts at other clubs - Matt Ryan, Mitchell Achurch, Peni Tagive to name some. Neil Begovich is a good player too but he saw more of a life in his own business than footy.

There are plenty of examples of players having played 20's at one club and now playing NRL at another club..So What !

From the Broncos 2008 NYC Grand final team Will Tupou is playing at another club but the Broncos still have 8 players from that NYC Grand final team of 2008 playing NRL for the Broncos in 2012.
Josh Hoffman, Jharal Yow Yeh, Ben Hunt, Josh McGuire, Andrew McCullough, Mitchell Dodds, Alex Glenn and Dunamis Lui.

Canberra from their NYC Grand final team of 2008 have: Josh Dugan, Drury Low, Jarrod Croker, Michael Picker,Travis Waddell and Shaun Fensom. With Daniel Vidot elsewhere.

The Melbourne NYC team that beat Wests Tigers in 2009 have: Gareth Widdop, Justin O'neill, Matt Duffie, Luke Kelly, Kenny Bromwich and Kevin Proctor

Of course they are all not going to make it, the majority don't make. We are talking about a blokes resume and his ability to **find future NRL players for the Wests Tigers.**

He brings a lot of players into the Wests Tigers but from our NYC Grand final team of 2009 the only one left playing NRL for Wests Tigers in 2012 is Aaron Woods a local Balmain junior. I wouldn't class a local junior coming through the system who played Australian Schoolboys as a difficult find.

What about Simon Dwyer - oh that's right it was the coach, CEO and recruitment man that caused his accident.
And which of the FG squad should have been let go for all the TC talent to progress to NRL

Too easy to be a knocker but how about some alternatives to support the knock

I love your knowledge of the game in the NYC B&W - you are first class.

What I think is being pointed out here, is that McDonnell is introducing the talent to our club. We have the players in the lower grades that can do the job. Our issue appears to be development of that talent. For that I believe we need to look at the senior coaching staff at both NRL and State Cup level. This may have been influenced by the issues surrounding Balmain and Wests, but I prefer to think that the issue is with the coaching staff at NRL level not having the kids ready to step up.

This is best exemplified by the fact that we need to bring in talent now that Robbie has been selected for Origin. Give the kids ago. They don't need to start, they can come off the bench. If you don't give them a taste then we will never know what they can do.

I suppose the argument against is that the junior players we have let go or lost have not kicked on at other clubs. Guys like Mullaney, Lazarus, Pritchard, Mataka, Gower have not set the world on fire by any means.

From what i have heard that work/study rule isn't heavily enforced. More for show then anything else it seems

That's a little misleading. Robert Lui, Andew Fifita, Simon Dwyer and Jason Schirnack all played NRL for the WT after playing in the NYC GF. Not McDonnell's fault that the first three are no longer playing NRL with the WT. So that's at least 4 graduates who would have probably still be playing for our NRL team.

Add Matt Groat, James Tedesco, Ben M-M to that list and you're getting a lot of NYC graduates who've come up to the NRL team.

As it was explained to me by another forum member, Warren appears to be more in charge of identifying and recruiting the juniors, while their promotion and retention in FG lies with Sheens.

Warren can hardly be held responsible for Sheens failing to retain players, or lack of promotion.

So true ..The Head Coach decides who gets a run and who doesnt…careful, this might turn into another Sheens bash

To paraphrase Homer and Rev Lovejoy:

Is this about Tim Sheens?
Everything is about Tim Sheens… except this...

It's not my intention for it to go that way, simply saying that players who don't get a run in FG and look for opportunities elsewhere is a little outside Warren's responsibilities of employment.

Could have… Would have… Should have… but aren’t!
The other 3 NYC Grand Final teams I have mentioned Canberra, Broncos and Melbourne also have graduates who have moved to other clubs.

Groat made the under 15 Australian merit team and was put on a scholarship at St. Gregs after that.

Ben Murdoch-Masila was signed after Keebra won the Arrive alive cup in 2009.

Tedesco is a terrible example to use to support your argument as he was not wanted by McDonnell. Ex Balmian forward Derek McVey was the one who tipped Sheens about Tedesco. McDonnell had his money on a kid by the name of Jay Bonnell another under 15 Australian merit team player who was also placed on a scholarship but by the age of 18 Bonnell couldn't even make the Wests SG Ball team.

Signing players who make rep teams at 15 is not a talent. Yes McDonnell can sign junior players and he signs plenty not a difficult job. All clubs have their quota of signing these young kids. Throw enough darts eventually you might hit a bullseye.

The ability to identify talent like Cameron Smith who missed out on representing Australian Schoolboys to a bloke by the name of Daniel Irvine and Billy Slater who gave up to be a jockey and Cooper Cronk who came from Rugby Union is a talent. Can he do that ?

But hang on, you made a post suggesting it was somehow Warren McDonnell's fault that only one player had come from the WT NYC GF team and used that to belt him over the head. I was just pointing out that it was an unfair assessment, like it's his fault Lui belted his missus or Dwyer got injured. Nor is it his fault Fifita got punted. To exclude them in a comparison is simply disingenuous… Then you give him no credit for signing junior reps before pointing out that not all junior reps go on to big things.

Maybe he's not as great as the Melbourne Storm guy nor do I know how many he is personally responsible or what network he has. They pay overs for a lot of their young guys because they lack juniors. Billy Slater came down to trial at Brisbane Norths who of course were Melbourne's feeder team. You make it sound like the Storm plucked him straight from Gai Waterhouse's stables. Cooper Cronk played Aust schoolboys for union.I assume most of Canberra's juniors are from that area.

I really don't know what you've got against WM and to be honest I don't care. Personally I think the quality of juniors coming through is good. What role he plays, I don't know but again I don't care. If he simply manages the process and relies on tips and advice, well so long as the results are good who cares?
