Has there ever been a better commentator when a team plays well? The way he calls great pieces of play is breathtaking. I will never forget the game when souths scored twice in the last 2 minutes against the roosters to win and his call of "take me now i have seen it all" was classic. Last night he was at his best calling our great tries. He makes it very enjoyable.

Yes can be a little robotic in his calls but comes up with some good one liners. He gets more excited with tigers games as he was a wests magpie fan as a youngin.
One of my favorite lines and heard it a lot in 05 was 'the tigers score the first try and they will play from in front today/night

If you can, watch and listen to the commentary of the Nofo try on Fox and 9\. Smith keeps up with the play, Warren (god bless him) is about 2-3 passes behind the play.

Smith is very good… Had to watch 9 last night, Rab's was very excited about us as well while Gus Joey Finchey were heaping praise on JT... Especially Gus

Did you hear him last night 'saying' to Jason Taylor when the Tigers had sealed the win "smoke them if youve got them". A classic.

Good thread. My favourite commentator by a big margin. I had to watch Channel 9 and they weren't too bad for a change. They got stuck on stupidity a few times such as with "telepathy" but for the most part they called the footy.

Would always take Smith over Warren any day.

Warren Smith was a big Balmain fan now a WT fan. Although he is very professional with his calls.

I remember in Balmain Leagues Club the night of the 2005 GF, he arrived around 11pm and tigers fan started buying him beers.

Yep Warren Smith was definitely a Balmain fan, a few years ago on Fox they showed a clip of him at the '89 major semi between Balmain v Souths and he was in the crowd going nuts when Bruce McGuire scored the match winner.
As a caller he makes a good fan in the crowd IMO. Yells like a goose at every insignificant play, too many Americanisms and seems to repeat his favourite one-liners ad nauseum.
Bring back David Morrow, Warren Boland and Johnny Peard-they were the best. Closely followed by Graeme Hughes, Ian Maurice and Billy Anderson.

Matt Thompson is awful. Sounds like he's yelling across a crowded bar.

Nearly as abrasive and unsophisticated as Hadley and Gilbert.

By comparison, I don't find any Fox commentators intolerable.

I'll have to stream all games next year I think.

Yep, they were bad. Daley was shocking. How he got a coaching job after that I will never know. Showed a complete lack of football intelligence.
