I love watching the old deep lob passes from DH, some 15 metres back to the half, who needs time and space for a clearing kick with the old leather balls. His kick goes to about 30 m out and bobbles all over the place. The passes are also so deep too, often the runner gets the ball way behind the advantage line.
The overall skillset is so much higher now, as is the athleticism, which I feel reduces the ability for real footy heads to showcase their skills. There used to be such a difference between the halves with real guile and the lumbering props, whereas nowadays you may just get run down by a fit prop.
Truth being told though, I think looking back at the 80s has a lot to do with rose-coloured glasses. I remember the Winfield Cup, Origin and Kangaroo tours being epic to watch, but much like the old classic cartoons, not so good on repeated modern viewing.
