Watmough case sets dangerous precedence

So what stops rich clubs from signing up ageing stars on back ended deals only to have them retire part way through their contract?

That will happen or clubs will try it on if they rule in favour of parra here. but you still have to prove it is an injury that could cause you to retire, but we all know money changes hands to get what ever is needed.

I would really like to know if WT were afforded the same luxury when Tuiaki, Dwyer and Fulton were forced to retire through injury? I'm betting we werent and had to pay those 3 out of our salary cap expenditure for the remaining years of their contract.
Different rules for different clubs. It always is.

New rules, were only enforced after the Mckinnon incident.

Hopefully it isn't that simple. Apparently the NRL are looking into his injury more closely - they'll try to determine at what point the injury became significant enough as to possibly effect retirement, the point at which this was realised. Before that time he would have been simply injured and awaiting a return to play. Maybe up until that point in time money owed will need to be payed from the salary cap? So his retirement may only be a partial fix in clearing Para's excess cap?

FTB is correct…Wests Tigers applied for cap relief when Fulton retired early from concussion and were knocked back...

McKinnon was injured Rd 3 2014..Fulton retired 10 July 2014...

It is a case by case basis and purely up to the NRL's discretion...

That's what they are reporting Sco77y, apparently they need to shed a few players plus Watmough, but they have been granted plenty of favours so far in this schemozzle so who knows.

Is that what happened Geo? That is typical isn't it? Parra will get their wish you can bet on it.
The equality and fairness of our competition is fantastic :unamused: :deadhorse:

As far as I know when Fulton was forced to retire his contract money was still counted in our cap. Could be wrong, but I am sure I read this somewhere

Yeah true FTB, as far as punishments go they got it fairly easy imo.. The NRL are giving them a step by step guide on how to get out of it and holding their hand the whole way through!

Absolutely. The NRL are apologetic towards Parra at every turn. One could be forgiven for forgetting that they are actually cheating, rorting, deceitful scum.

As I said it is a case by case basis…As you may recall 2014 was a shocking run with injury ..we applied for cap relief for Fulton's early retirement to come off 2014 but were knocked back..His 2015 did not count in our 2015 Cap though...he also was given a job in admin...

For Dwyer we had to de-register his playing contract to get him off the Cap...we then employed him in an admin capacity not counting in the Cap...

Tuiaki was different again as his injury occurred very late in the 2009 season so no relief was sought and was off-contract...With a glimmer of hope we gave Tui a sign on contract for 2010 so he could be registered but to my and I think everyones great sadness he never came good...

I've never liked Watmong as a player , but I hope he hasn't been forced out of the game by the Parra officialdom

If he wanted one last chance to try and make a comeback he deserves it , he was a very good player for his clubs ,state and country

And yet you have never liked him! The haircut? Socks down? What got him in Happy's bad books?

For my part I think teams that had him in them were better for it. A very whole hearted player who you could rely on to give 100% every time he took the field.

Because he absolutely terrorized WT's side and he was from Manly

Don't like Gasnier for the same reason ,terrorized Tigers teams and was from the Dragons

Still able to respect them though

Detracting slightly from Watmough…I'm in the boat where while I think the punishment was fair, the thing that's not fair is the fact they've assembled a squad which would otherwise be impossible to put together.

Parra, what a basket case. Kieran Foran could be Jamie Lyon 2.0\. Could become disillusioned by all this and leave the club.

Interesting, i've been reading the Parra forum on LU tonight, and their supporters are very confident, almost cocky thinking the NRL will give them their points back if Watmough retires, as they will claim it was an injury from pre-February and that it wouldn't count towards this yrs cap.

I will put on my tin foil hat for a second. Not only will Parra be found compliant(which is disgraceful) but they will win the comp on the back of many dubious refereeing decisions for the rest of the year. The media get their fairytale ending just like when souths won in 2014.
Yes i am a very cynical old bastard

The 6 month investigation, all the press on Tuesday, deregistering 5 staff members (now on appeal in Supreme court) and the solution was simply for one player to retire.

Please….
