The knights look terrible and have done all season. They have, literally, no attacking structure at all.

It's very interesting to see as this is the first time Bennet has ever been given a team that wasn't ready made.His Broncos teams would have won with any coach (at one time they had 13 internationals in the squad) and his Dragons team were a constant top 4 team that needed little tweaking. They just needed to get over the hump.

I am not saying he's not a great coach. He'd be perfect for us right now (ready made side, just needs a motivator).

But all this "greatest ever" coach stuff is nuts. He spent 3 years at saints and now with the knights and doesn't seem to have been able to create any sort of attack other than "kick on the last" or "Boyd create an overlap".
 
maybe because he doesn't have the side he wants yet…..you can't chuck 17 shit **** in a team and give em a good coach then say go win the grand finals

Yeah, that's what I am saying. This is the first real time he's EVER had to get average players to perform and improve.

Surely the "greatest coach ever" can improve average players? So far, Snowden has gone backwards a mile. Mullen hasn't improved at all. Their attack is non existent.

Rick Stone had the team playing much better last season.

When Bennett takes over a team it always take 12 months to click. He spends most of the first year at a new club getting the defence in order. It's the second year you'll really see the difference he makes when their defence starts to resemble the Dragons defence of a couple of years ago.

He certainly doesn't get them playing great attacking footy. The Dragons teams had horrible attack and the Knights look the same. Note: the Broncos don't count as that team had a million weapons.

This is Bennet's first time having to actually really improve a team. If he get the Knights to a comp win within 3 years, I'll be incredibly impressed.

Personally, I don't think he can do it without a loaded roster stacked full of internationals.

I have given Bennett enough slack with a very disappointing start to the season but when one is on $1.5 million per year, he doesn't have the same luxury as other new coaches have with teams.

From my observations he has taken the team backwards significantly from last year.

1\. Apart from maybe Jimmy, every other player is not playing no where near as good as last year. The deteriation is very obvious.

2\. He continues to select a very light bench and tonight there was not one genuine prop on the bench.

3\. The attack and structure is no where it was last year under Stone.

4\. The team has a genuine lack of pace and apart from Uate and Boyd, there is no pace in this team.

5\. The team's performance has got worse each week and not improved as one would have expected.

6\. It is obvious there is lack of confidence/ belief/ morale and this sheets back to Bennett.

The team has no chance to make the semi's on form this year and Tinkler (quite rightly) should be putting some serious questions to Bennett.

I agree 100% mate. Ive always thought this about Bennett, I wouldnt call him a myth, as much as i would like to (because i cant as he has great stats) but it must be pretty hard to coach a team that at one stage was 75% of the National squad and near on 100% of the state squad. I mean really, whats involved in coaching when you have a playing roster like he has been blessed with in his coaching career? The biggest yard stick and what will eventually be his legacy for mine and to truly earn the tag of 'greatest coach ever' would be if he can turn the Knights into a premiership winning team. Give him 3 years similar to what Sheens did at the Tigers. Give him a year or 2 to get the players he wants and then a year or 2 to grab the trophy. This will be the biggest tell if he is truly worthy of such a title.

Sheens (although slightly damaged in recent years) for me would also go down as one of the greatest coaches ever. He too was blessed with a playing roster only coaches could dream about during the "green machine" days of the late 80's early 90's. The premierships won were similar to Bennetts coaching ability i feel. Throw the ball to Sticky, Loz, Big Mal and co and say "just do your thing" would be an amazing position to be in as a coach. We then saw him travel north to the cowboys where he completely stunk and got canned….he had a poor playing roster. The difference after that was that he did come to the Tigers, got his team and snatched the trophy. This time not with a team of Champions but a Champion team. I rate Tim's coaching ability better then Bennet when i look at the squads he has had in the past. However i do feel he has butchered his record a fair bit in the last few years for not replacing Prince and then this year not replacing Lui. If Sheens can pull out another premiership with the Tigers in the next year or 2 and Bennett fails to deliver at the Knights, i think i would have to rate Sheens better than Bennett.

yep, he'll either go down in the history books as one of the 'greatest coaches of all time' or he will go down as 'one of the luckiest coaches to be blessed for many many years with great playing rosters'.
 
What are you all on about… The knights have a fantastic side.
10 of their side from tonight's game have played for nsw qld or Australia or nz
That is more then most sides
They have no reason to be playing this bad.

Bennett had a team full of Australian reps at Brisbane, that he brought through the ranks and got to that level. It's not like he went out and bought half the Australian team, very few of them were Aussie reps when he got his hands on them. I think things will work out well for him at the Knights as long at Tinkler persists with him for more than 1 year. They have a lot of new players in key positions this season and sometimes it can take close to a season to start clicking.

i dont agree with that statement at all.

Wouldnt it be nice to have a catchment area called Queensland. Imagine the quality of a side you could have if there was just 1 or 2 teams from NSW.

Of course the cream will rise to the top and come through the system regardless of who the coach is.

You must be VERY young.

Bennet started with a Broncos team packed full of internationals.

He didn't then "develop" a new set, the Broncos got FED internationals year after year before the Storm came in…...they essentially had all of QLD to pick from for their first ten years.

Those in bold had already previously played for QLD or AUS before even taking the park for the Broncos.
Those in italics played for their state in 1988 or 1989
Mark Hohn played for his state in the early 90's maybe 92 or 93??

Not a bad team to start with. 12 of the starting 13 were all rep players by 1989\. Bennett continued the run with a team full of QLD and AUS players for his whole time at Brisbane.

Although they did win the Panasonic cup in 89' the biggest surprise is that it took him 5 years to lift the premiership trophy? Thats the amazing part about it!!

I didn't think the Knights would hit the ground running this year, but I didn't think they would be going as badly as they are.

At this stage, it appears Bennett is great with tweaking a side and making some slight adjustments to get them winning those tough games…..we'll have to see how the Knights are by the end of the year about whether he can build a side from scratch

Neither did I…. But I did expect them to play at least as good as last year... Especially with a few more big names and the games 'best' coach
