We always fight: Marshall plays down Sheens spats

BENJI MARSHALL has held spirited arguments with his coach Tim Sheens over the prospect of players leaving Wests Tigers - but said any suggestion the pair were at loggerheads was false.

The Wests Tigers five-eighth said yesterday he had sat with his coach and debated the merits of the significant turnover at the club, which has resulted in Bryce Gibbs, Andrew Fifita and Tim Moltzen leaving, but maintained it was the coach's right to carry out his plan - just as it was his right as a senior player to query it.

''We always fight,'' Marshall said. ''Well, we don't fight, we have differences of opinion on things. As a senior player in the team, I feel like I can talk to the coach about these things. It was more of a talk to the coach about where we were heading and the players in our team. That's it. I don't know where all this other stuff comes from.

''It's none of my business at the end of the day. I just like to know about who we're having around. You plan being in there for five minutes, and you're in there for half an hour. That's just him. It's no different from every other week. I go in there every week and talk to him about my game, or what we can do better as a team. That's what senior players do.

''There's no unrest. There's players that are not happy about having to go, I suppose, but it's out of the way, and that's good for the club.''

Moltzen's departure to St George Illawarra next year caused ripples particularly since he is a flatmate of Marshall's. But he conceded Moltzen might now be better off.

''It's disappointing, but at the end of the day, it might be a good move for 'Moltz'; a new start, at a team that needs a fullback,'' Marshall said. ''With the form he showed on the weekend [against North Queensland], there are promising signs of what he can offer to the club.

''As a mate, it's sad to lose him. I just won't see him every day now.

''In my opinion, he's a representative player of the future without a doubt, and he showed glimpses on the weekend of what he can do.''

The Tigers did likewise, beating the Cowboys 38-18 and showing there was life in the side yet, having come through their off-field turbulence. The Tigers face Sydney Roosters on Saturday night at Leichhardt Oval with Marshall hoping the club has turned a corner.

''We hadn't scored more than six points for three weeks,'' Marshall said. ''It was just our completions. We completed under 50 per cent against Parramatta, the week before something like 60 per cent. When you give the opposition teams too much ball, you're never going to win. We addressed that on the weekend. We really turned our completion rate around. Our attitude was always there - we just weren't executing the way we should have been.

''We're still in the eight … anyone in the eight can win it.''

Marshall said the fact that the Tigers had yet to show their best made them confident they could still trouble the top sides in the finals.

''We have to be,'' he said. ''Our execution's been poor for three weeks, but we turned it around in one game. We've just got to keep doing that. There's plenty of improvement. We're far from our best.''

Hang on - we dont need a fullback? Who is filling the fullback void next year?

we must have a few options dont we?? what about Brown, Meaney, Mullany, Tedesco (sorry for the spelling on these names if they are wrong, im too lazy to look them up)

However if we are going to go down this track we should still field the best man in fullback to give the title a shot this year, even if they are leaving the club next year and that would be either Moltz or Big Wade. If we realise with a few games to go that we cant make the finals, if one of these younger guys will be fullback next year, Wade/Moltzen should be dropped and the new fullback blooded. OR maybe we will be buying someone else??????????????

As for the whole Sheens/Benji thing…..........just adopt a kid together already....geshhhh

Benji just upset because his rent is going up ,that's all . Seriously though that's pretty normal though Senior players in the squad who have played with the same coach will have discussions or even arguments with higher management . You feel you want to stick up for the rights of people who you feel aren't being treated well . I have tiffs with my Area Manager all the time . I will have the last laugh this week . He is a Cowbees fan :roll

There was once a time when i would be so excited to be reading anything to do with this club in the paper. It's got to the point that i now dread it. Hopefully this article will put to bed all the rumours and innuendo in both the press and on this forum and we can get on with making the finals and give this comp a shake.

Yeah, I agree sometimes I don't want to know about the intricacies and conflicts in a football side. The media play a role in giving us information we don't always want to know.- just in the case of the news of the world saga.

Just get on and play good football and give us something to get excited about.

This article contradicts earlier quotes by Sheens that Marshall had not spoken to him about it.

I don’t really give a rats a*** but gee there’s a lot horse s*** going on.

i cannot imagine any player having this type of relationship with Wayne Bennett. Sheens doesnt warrant that same respect. This thread says a lot about the state of our club.

Agreed. Dont really care until it effects the sides performances (which it may have been )…lest just smash these coks.

This is not leadership, its pathetic they get the marquee player to come out with articles to calm the waters

Where is our leader, the CEO?

Poor poor form humpty

Moltzen and Marshall are housemates and best friends - and the Kiwi superstar had apparently been pleading with Sheens to keep him. When I told Sheens of the rumour that Benji was filthy at him, the Test coach said: "Have you bothered ringing Marshall to ask him? It's just another rumour. **I'll tell you something: If Benji has got an issue, he would front me about it.**"

"He would". Tim, or "he did"?

It doesnt say when Benji sat down with Sheens, so maybe this happened after the earlier quotes? I doubt it, but there are no time frames given to signifcantly say they are contradicting each other.

I think the club has given enough spin on all this. With some players like Gibbs and Moltz's future now settled, and the announcement of a couple of signings, i have the feeling things have settled a little and the club just needs to shut up now.

definitely not true, wayne bennett encourages debate and players thoughts.
That said in the end Bennett gets his own way.

What do they so if two people working together always agree, then one of them is redundant!

Why would there be anything wrong or out of the ordinary with what is described in this article? It simply sounds like a pretty fair working relationship to me, you must have good communications in all facets of life and coach/player is no different (especially senior player).

"He would". Tim, or "he did"?

sheens said "he would" on or before july 10…
benj spoke with sheen "yesterday" on july 19...

looks like the article might have sparked benj to say something??

He said yesterday, he sat and spoke with sheens

not

He sat and spoke with sheens yesterday

Theres the difference,

as KS has stated, we dunno when this was but I'd guess it was when they first learnt moltz was going to go, or maybe as you suggest drewby it spurred benji…who knows.
