Tim Sheens insists there are no dramas between him and new Wests Tigers recruitment boss Scott Fulton, but is clearly frustrated the club had botched the chance to make Luke Brooks a one-club player.
“You’d like to hope the coach gets what he wants,” Sheens, a four-time premiership winner, said on Thursday.

Manly announced this week they had signed Brooks to a four-year deal, which came on the same day this masthead reported Sheens’ eventual successor Benji Marshall had clashed with Fulton over the roster.
Fulton, whose initial appointment caught Sheens and Marshall off guard, was understood to have had little interest in keeping Brooks. Marshall, meanwhile, wanted nothing to do with Fulton’s own target, Sea Eagles’ playmaker Josh Schuster.

Marshall has since been forced to shoot down rumours he was about to walk from the club altogether because of the split vision over how the roster should look when he eventually takes charge in 2025.
Sheens on Thursday hosed down talk of any rift with Fulton, and was bemused some sections of the media who had labelled Brooks “hopeless” this season were now prepared to describe him as a great buy for Manly.

“Brooksy has made his decision, people know where I stood with that,” said Sheens, when asked about his thoughts on the move.
Pressed on the coaches and Fulton not seeing eye-to-eye over Brooks, Sheens said: “That’s wrong. You’re talking about Scott and recruitment department having an issue with Brooksy, [about there being] a divide among the recruitment department. That’s wrong.

“There was no divide about wanting Brooksy to stay. The issue is he decided to go, I think there’s more money involved and other things, so we have to live with that.
“I deal with Scott every day. The coaches make recommendations, the amount of money the club has with the cap weighs in on that sort of stuff.

“But you’d like to hope the coach gets what he wants. Brooksy will leave the club, I’m not blaming anyone particularly – I’m not blaming Brooksy nor his agent or anyone else. He’s made his decision and we have to live with it.”
Just who plays No. 7 at the Tigers has become the biggest question, especially with Adam Doueihi no certainty to return from a knee injury at all next year, and with this weekend’s new-look halves combination — Brandon Wakeham and Daine Laurie — both off contract.

Marshall met with Manly teen Latu Fainu on Wednesday night.
“Something falls out of the tree all the time,” Sheens said. “We’re not overly concerned about that at the minute, we’re about the next 10 rounds and getting away from the bottom of the table.”
Laurie will get his shot in the No. 6 jersey against North Queensland on Saturday. Sheens had hoped to see him play there before the bye, only for Laurie to be still overcoming a concussion.
“Looking at his training the other day, he’ll go OK, he’s played there before so he’s not new to it,” Sheens said.
“Your fullback is a third pivot in the game if he’s got a pass, which he has. He’s a very good defender and aggressive in that area. I expect him to go well.

“We’ll give him every opportunity the next few games to cement a spot there.
“Both boys [Wakeham and Laurie] are [in our plans], but time will tell what we do and how much money we spend. I’ve told the boys to play footy ... play good footy and things will work out.”

I don’t like this one bit by Sheens. The club made him a fair offer & Brooks decided to test the market & his agent got him more money & a lengthier deal that’s all there is to it. This isn’t the coach not getting what he wants this is the player choosing to head elsewhere.

Thought he was professional.
Diverted all attention from rumours and basically said it is what it is and the club shouldn't sit on its hands.

“But you’d like to hope the coach gets what he wants” isn’t professional at all imo it sounds to me like he’s having a sook that Brooks has signed elsewhere when I believe the club made a fair & reasonable offer for Brooks & he chose to go elsewhere.

Yeah I don't wish to pick apart quotes took it as a simple quote to show that everyone needs to be on the page and the coach ultimately has to work with the assembled roster/squad

Nothing was botched. We made him an offer, he declined and went elsewhere on a long term big money contract. The club had been burnt by him too many times to offer such a deal. The player would probably have preferred to leave, nothing the club can do about that. Playing alongside someone like DCE should bring out the best in him everyone knows it, it's up to him to see if he can deliver now.

Says it all.

I think there are a couple of points missed by most:
  • Brooks has been clear that he would be looking out for himself over the club when it came to his next contract.
  • We had every chance to make a counter offer and didn't.
This has played out exactly as expected and probably as expected by the club as well. Probably went something like this:

WT: "Here Brooksy - we want you to stay and be part of the resurgence of the club. We are looking to find a halves partner for you that will control the ruck and allow you to use your running game. Based on how you are performing this is what we think is fair market value."

Brooksy: "Thanks for the offer guys, I think I am worth more than that so will test the market. How about we have a chat again after we see what comes from that"

Moses: "Hey we've got a 3 year deal from Manly on the table at $XM, how about you match that and we can keep Brooksy a one club player"

WT: "Sorry mate we've made what we think is a fair offer and we're not payong overs for Brooksy despite wanting him to stay. If he wants to be a club legend accept the offer otherwise Manly can have him"

Moses (to Manly): Tigers have offered 3 years at $X+YM for him to stay and become a one club legend.

Manly: We can't offer you more money but how about we kick in an extra year?

Moses: Done (pockets more $ and Luke walks off into the sunshine)

WT: Thank firetrucks for that - for a while there I thought we would be stuck with him!

Brooks has been agitating about going for 18 months, it shouldn't be a shock he's gone. He was offered a contract longer than any of us would have offered and probably on more coin. Additionally, he stays in Sydney and plays next to a dominant half, he was always going to go for that.
But make no mistake once DCE hangs em up and Brooks becomes the main man which will come at some point in his 4 yrs there, he'll be the same player he was here. They will have to surround him with a dominant half for however long he plays for, something which if we had done and paid him accordingly he'd probably still be here.

I didn't take that from the interview, I thought he answered a really dumb question well and correctly, the coach should get what he wants but as he said there are a lot of other factors that influence that as well, such as salary cap, individual decisions etc. He addressed the Fulton rumor well but a wanker like Hooper will still find something sinister in it.

I believe there are big problems there and I'm giving Sheens full marks for being extremely diplomatic and doing his best to hose it down.

He does know how to put a positive spin on things, but that's just the way I see it, I'm sure others will be critical of Sheens.

Wonder what would have happened if we had matched the offer ?
Would he have then chosen to head elsewhere for no financial gain ?

I'm a little disappointed as I think this is an opportunity for a circuit breaker while we are at rock bottom (wooden spooners, last, no halfback). I wish he'd stop being the nice guy and turn on those who have gone and created more drama at the club just as we were turning a bit of a corner.

Ben Hunt didn't shy away from his frustration at the Dragons and I think it will have an immediate impact.
In some ways I also wouldn't mind if Sheens had a dummy spit, threw all the clowns under the bus and said c'ya later.

I’m just tired of any talk of botches and back door discussions without consultation. We are trying to attract players when we already have poor perception from outside the club. These ongoing stories of fractures in the ranks do nothing to encourage anyone to consider joining the club. It seems the only news we hear about recruitment is how we botch it or the infighting that turns people away.

OR

It went

Club - here’s an offer Luke, we’d love you to stay..

Brooks - Belt your basket case of a club, up your arse…

Signs with Manly
I like that story better, but think there was probably a little more diplomacy knowing Mr Sheens

The most concerning thing for me is Brooks' departure left an opening for which the new recruitment manager attempted to immediately fill with an overpriced, overrated dud which his good mate manages. Is he working in WT best interests or Mario Tartaks?
