We should sign Chris Heighington for 2018

I believe it would be a great gesture and statement for the club to offer Chris Heighington a chance to retire with us. In the NFL there is a practice of clubs re-signing their stars after they retire with other teams (having been moved on due to matters of professional sport) and it is quite a nice practice. We however, are in a situation where we're unlikely to exhaust our entire salary cap in 2018 anyway (there aren't enough players on the market for us to sign haha) and Heighington is actually playing quite well for Cronulla.

We're in a situation where we need some leadership, club culture and I think this would be a decision that would be viewed favourably by most in the NRL community if not everyone.

Thoughts?

Yes - because I still remember him having a go at teo when teo was dogging it, and that's what the club needs.
Small contract, 1 year, may well not play a lot of 1sts, but won't let anyone down if he does. As long as he's used for something other than just running straight back in behind the ruck.
Anyone who gets the career he has had through sheer grit and hard work can't be bad for a team going through a rebuild period.

I think whomever else we sign will be in front of him.

It would be an insult to sign him for one more year and he spends the year in reggies.

And a no from me as well.

Interesting. No sentiment or loyalty towards him shown from the majority of the fans commenting. Why should there be an expectation of loyalty from players to clubs and fans then? The thought here is that it shows that we as a club DO respect our roots, DO respect our players and past heroes and would sacrifice a small piece of salary cap to demonstrate this.

So, seriously wouldn't give him a minimum NRL contract just for this purpose? What about a second tier contract?

NRL, srs bznz.

He is still holding down a regular first grade spot at the reigning premiers. We are short odds to be bottom 2 or 3\. I think you may be slightly underrating what he is offering as a player right now. There have been older first graders.

Officially the worst idea ever submitted on this forum

Certainly a contender for it. We have plenty of backrowers, we don't need another.

You guys are thinking I am suggesting him for his value as a player aren't you. I probably should have expected it given that we live in a society of headline readers.

Well signing players for their value as a player would seem over rated and a waste of time so it's a Yes from me…

When we finish recruiting this year we'll probably be a million under the cap. Much like Newcastle are. I see no issue here.

And which of you said we have enough backrowers? Lmao that's the one position we need to strengthen if anything. We're two injuries next year from playing Rankin in the backrow.

Yes! Wait, this isn't a thread about Russell Packer. No to Heighno.

He's a legend but he's barely younger than me, that's an issue in rugby league.
