I think you will find that are playing Manly. Going to be a long long season for the Maggies with the BRET side stacked

Not a bad looking side, but clearly not as strong as last year for the Magpies. Be interesting to see if they are bolstered with any more players throughout the season.

David Fifita cant even crack the Maggies side…..thought he was an up and comer....??

Since when does starting off the bench mean a player hasnt "cracked the side"?
Bench Front Rowers now play a different role and often play more minutes than the starters, its about the best use of a limited interchange system and how the coach believes a player will be most effectively utilised.

any reason why all the fringe players ended up in the BRET side of the merger. Im originally from the tigers side of the fence, so im ok with this, but had it went the other way and the maggies had all the reserves I might be disapointed, how do the old magpies feel about that…..

I m sure these guys go well and will do the Black and whites proud, but was wondering if any magpies fans had an issue with a break up.

Maybe next year they will reverse it??

I would of thought maybe an idea would be to stick all the gun backs in one side and stick all the gun forwards in the other . That way they are getting used to playing together for the future when they are playing top grade together . The interests of the Tigers NRL side should come first , not our previous club loyalties

Of course Maggies fans are disappointed, every fan wants their team to be competetive but Sheens doesnt coach Maggies or Bret, he is the coach of the Wests Tigers and has decided that this is what is best for his team.

The difference is if the shoe was the other foot BRET wouldnt be able to field a team in State Cup or Jim Beam without access to NRL contracted players so then he would only have one open age team to develop players in.

This has happened before and the maggies got touched up week after week but still managed to develop NRL standard players eg Lawrence, Dwyer,Gallant,Mataka etc.

I have no doubt before seasons end Sheens will hook one or two more from the Maggies ranks and give them their shot at the big time as well.

It may not be ideal for the fans who solely follow the Pies but as co-owners of the Wests franchise the Magpies are committed to maintaining a direct pathway to the NRL for its junior players.

I agree with everything you have said, was just curious, i think the good of the West tigers is everyones goal, but I think even the most ardent Balmain man (like myself) would agree wests provide the bulk of the juniors, and thought seeing them all flick across to tigers might have been a bit hard to swallow, glad that it seems not to be an issue!

Manly Sea Eagles Vs Western Suburbs Magpies
Leichhardt Oval, Saturday, March 12
Kick-off: 3.00pm
Referee: Gavin West

**Summary**: Manly head into their first game of NSW Cup since 2008 with an intriguing mix of youth and experience. Exciting young backs Michael Oldfield and Scott Blanch will be guided around by experienced players like Matt Cross and Shane Rodney. Western Suburbs have signed former Gold Coast Titan Ben Jeffery, Rocky Trimarchi from Celtic Crusaders along with Fijian five-eighth Ryan Millard, and the Magpies will need these senior players to lead from the front in this match. The Sea Eagles back-row matches up with the best in the competition. Daniel Harrison and Darcy Lussick faced each other in last year’s NSW and Queensland Residents match but now, along with Mitch Jowett, will provide the Sea Eagles with a solid backbone for NSW Cup success.

**Game Breaker**: Michael Oldfield – Oldfield has already tasted the NRL and was outstanding for the Junior Kangaroos on their New Zealand Tour last year. Possesses both the aerial skill and speed on the ground now demanded by NRL coaches.

**Prediction**: Western Suburbs usually start the season well and having not seen much of the Manly squad we are sticking with what we know. Wests in a close one.
