Wests and Melbourne

We both have 17 humans on the park at any one time. Can someone please explain why they are different to us with a roster lesser than ours across the park. I'm sorry, but i just dont get it.

They have the right players in the right positions.

Smith - always makes the correct play. Tough defender and great leader.
Cronk - skillful half who has absolute faith in his outside men. Fantastic kicking game.
Slater - always jonny on the spot…never out of position in attack or defence.

Everyone else follows the game plan to a tee and only concentrates on doing their job to the best of their ability. They dont stray from their directives...they leave all creativity to these three men.

Could not have put it better myself.

Smith appears to be a great leader and would have not let his team conceed 5 tries in the last 14 minutes.

I'm assuming you're referring to our lack of discipline compared to Melbourne. It's well known Bellamy runs a pretty strict ship down there, a lot more so than at other clubs. It is frustrating though, there was NO excuse for even letting in 12 points let alone 30 in the final 13 minutes. Our guys clocked off and i would've thought that given what happened in the Souths game, this would be a non issue. Again though it has surfaced and it IS a worry.

What happened wasn't good enough. It wasn't acceptable and it was unprofessional! I don't expect this to happen again this season and if it does, the God help us! At some point you learn lessons. If they can't learn from this then they're a pretty naive group.

The main difference is our players don't have boats!

Seriously though its a very different team, in fact they are pretty much the polar opposite of the Tigers.

The only thing I would say is that if there style (boring) is so effective why the hell are we trying to be so different?

Surely Benji and Robbie would be more effective if we had a squad that could better serve them through better discipline, ball control, defence etc.?

I have heard Bellamy has a very very intense training regime and his expectations at training is twice that of game day. He uses this philosophy to ensure success from a simplified game plan.

From the outside looking in, Discipline & Structure are the 2 differences that I can see… If Boring wins Minor Premierships so be it. Winning the MP puts you in a very strong position for the Finals!!!

The scores do not show Melbourne is boring

Round 1 - 24 points (WT 17)
Round 2 - 24 points (WT 18)
Round 3 - 30 points (WT 12)
Round 4 - 44 points (WT 16)
Round 5 - 34 points (WT 16)
Round 6 - 42 points (WT 14)
Round 7 - 12 points (WT 30 points)
Round 8 - 32 points (WT 31)

Only in round 7 we scored more points than Melbourne. Only twice (against Penrith and Parramatta)have we scored over 20 points to Melbourne's 7 times.

If Melbourne plays boring football then I would love WT to adopt it as well.

Bellamy demands 100% at all times…round 1 through to the GF. No sessions off, no slacking off. Players are scared not to perform.

Sheensy kind of accepts "off days" and players know they won't ever meet the reserve grade coach.........so, they feel comfortable.

Very different mentalities.

Their leaders are also better players than ours.

There is a few differences but these are big differences.

Firstly they have the best fullback in the NRL, we have probably the worst (No offence to Moltzen but the quality of fullbacks is outstanding).

Secondly they have the best halfback in the NRL (Arguably) and we have without doubt the worst (Once again, no offence to Humble meant who I rate as a player).

Thirdly Kicking Game. Again, Melbourne probably have the best kicking game in the NRL, and to me we undoubtebly have the worst. Kicking game is as important as having forwards who go forwards, or pace on the wings etc. Its practically another player.

Fourthly - Combinations. we have very little. Even our old backline sweep is looking tired. Melbourne have the best.

Fifth - Pace on the wings and the backs. Everyone will differ on this but we are the slowest in the NRL. Melbourne have good agile, pacey backs like Duffy.

Sixth - I dont honestly believe we cover them across the park. Lawrence, Marshall, Ellis and Woods would all slot into Melbourne nicely. Farah and Smith probably cancel each other out. Other than that I think Melbourne have us covered. At least in the backs anyway, Id swap every back we have (Other than Marshall and Lawrence) for there opposite number. And even the guys who Marshall and Lawrence are marking, I.E - Whiddop, are doing a great job for them. While vice versa Slater kills Moltzen, Duffy kills whatever winger we have etc, Cronk kills humble.

I think once Sheens is done we should adopt a similar style, or at least take some points from it.

I don't care if we grind for 80mins, just win. How awesome would it be to have 8 wins and 0 losses right now?

That is really interesting, thanks for the data Everett.

Melbourne have a coach that commands respect and insitutes a winning culture, and they have a Captain who is a leader ,all players that play for Melbourne regardless of statue play for each other and as a team! The Tigers on the other hand have players that play for themselves first and the team second, and do not have a leader on the park and a coach that will not drop underperforming players .Its pretty simple actually it's there for all to see watch a Melbourne game and the body language then watch this Tigers team and there body language..could you imagine if Melbourne let in 30 points in 10 Mins now that would be one week from HELL!.

I find it interesting that everyone is saying it is all bellemy.
They have the best organizing players with awesome vision and decision making skills in key spots and 7 and 9.
They have the best fullback I have seen.
This accounts for differences in style.
They are still benefitting from cheque book recruitment as their young players are still on unders (like all clubs) they paid overs for all of them (widdop, proctor oneil etc)
Bellemy is a good coach but is blessed with an amazing team
