Wests Campbelltown Leagues Club pulls out of WT

Just read that Wests Campbelltown Leagues club is giving up its 10% ownership in WT.

Vote on WT board will revert to Ashfield Leagues (30% owner) or Magpies Football club (10% owner)

Interesting move but they (WLC) have not really engaged with WT…. Puts a bit more pressure on Ashfield to kick more in the tin.

Apparently Part of the reason was due to Balmain not contributing their side of contribution to WT.

Can't be that simple can it ??

Wouldn't they have to sell their share of the Tigers to another party ??

Is there some strategy with involving Ashfield to attempt to give them some chance of getting the controlling interest in the Tigers //

WESTS Tigers are today in shock after one of the club's stakeholders - Wests Leagues Campbelltown - sensationally pulled out of the joint venture.

The Daily Telegraph has been told Wests Leagues Campbelltown has sent a letter to the Wests Tigers board permanently withdrawing from the club.

Wests Leagues Ashfield and Wests Campbelltown make up Western Suburbs' 50 per cent of the NRL joint venture club, with Balmain Tigers owning the remaining 50 per cent.

Disjointed venture: Campbelltown withdraws funding for Tigers
>
Wests Campbelltown Leagues has withdrawn from the Wests Tigers joint venture, sending a serious signal to the NRL that one of the sport's wealthiest backers in a region rich in playing talent will no longer financially support the amalgamated Magpies-Balmain club.
>
While the Wests Campbelltown licensed club will continue its $200,000 a year support of the Campbelltown junior league, it will not contribute any funds to the NRL club. The message to the joint venture was communicated on Friday in a letter by lawyers acting for Wests Campbelltown. Wests Campbelltown held one of Wests' five votes on the NRL club board and, until this year, had often voted with Balmain, giving the Tigers a 6-4 victory in meetings.
>
While the Wests Campbelltown vote will now flow to the Wests side of the joint venture, ensuring the Magpies camp can't be beaten in the boardroom, it will involve Wests Ashfield Leagues having to meet the share of cash traditionally contributed by Campbelltown.
>
Future investment in the joint venture has been the cause of friction between Wests and Balmain.
>
A $6.8 million debt at Balmain Leagues Club has meant the Tigers have experienced difficulty answering calls to satisfy the joint venture's rising debt. The Wests Group offered to provide Balmain's share of new funding in exchange for a casting vote at board meetings but this was rejected by Balmain.
>
It is understood Wests Campbelltown's frustration with the failure of the two owners to reach agreement on funding precipitated their withdrawal. Wests Campbelltown chief executive Tony Mathew claimed his club's exit would allow the Wests half of the joint venture to consolidate. ''There has been a lot of discussion in regards to an overdue change and restructuring. Those arrangements will still be 50-50\. It's just that our one director out of 10 won't be there. We've still got our support of rugby league, that's still our primary charter and we're still going to be involved in junior rugby league out here. We just think in the consolidating and restructuring of Wests Tigers going forward, we're happy to do this to allow Wests Tigers to move forward.''
>
Asked why Wests Campbelltown had chosen now to exit the joint venture that began in 2000, he said: ''Our operation at Wests Campbelltown is very different now to the one 13 years ago … Our circumstances have changed here and yet we still spend an enormous amount of time on Wests Tigers. We just feel it needs to be consolidated … We do get on well with Wests Ashfield … we've never been closer.''
>
Wests and Balmain alternate the joint venture chair annually, with the Magpies' Mike Bailey, currently in the position. Bailey said: ''Nothing really changes in terms of Wests Tigers. Campbelltown have given no indication they will withdraw any of the support they currently provide for the juniors of the Macarthur region. Through our funding of Wests Magpies, we [Wests Ashfield] look after the junior rep sides of the area, the SG Ball and Harold Matthews competitions. We have no intention of backing away from that support.''
>
Wests have outsourced that spending to the joint venture, ensuring the Magpie junior representative teams receive professional coaching and management. ''In terms of grassroots football in western Sydney, nothing changes,'' Bailey said. ''From an NRL perspective, at this stage there is no plan to alter the number of games played at Campbelltown Stadium or cut back the services in terms of what Wests Tigers players do in servicing the area. We are hoping to increase our presence in the region, and establish a centre of excellence there. If we ever need [Wests Campbelltown's] support for that, we'd be prepared [to ask them].''
>
Wests Tigers deputy chairman Nick Di Girolamo the leader of the Balmain side of the joint venture, said: ''We have a presence in the western suburbs of Sydney and will continue to do so.'' However, with the AFL investing funds in the Campbelltown region and no possibility of government money allocated for the redevelopment of Campbelltown Stadium, the ARL Commission must be concerned at the loss of a huge backer. Bailey hinted at this, saying: ''We've lost one entity and therefore it looks a bit cleaner on paper but it doesn't really address the key issues which the [ARLC] suggests need to be addressed. We are going to look at those issues.''

I was under the impression that Campbelltown Wests Leagues never really funded the first grade team anyway and concentrated on juniours/state cup. :/

Might give more power to Wests Leagues Ashfield which is by default the engine room of the Wests Tigers shareholders support. I think there is potential that this is a step towards consolidation.

Was just about to post this article. I think it's prob one of the recommendations the nrl suggested we take. 50/50 split. I always thought Ashfield was the one funding WT. So where does this leave us now in terms of the future since we can't get government funding for CSS and LO is on it's last legs. At least we are getting information now on what's going on with our team.

As far as I'm concerned. There is no reason why Campbelltown Stadium can't be built up. It's a great ground, a Leagues club next door. The train line runs right past it.

One thing I don't get is, why the hell do we only get ~10K crowd there. We pack LO but fail to crack 10K at Campbelltown

Yea something I can't figure out either. I have a feeling that sfs or anz along with CSS will be our home grounds next season. Having read an article a few months back saying last LO match would be R19\. Guess all we can do is wait and see. Any1 have an idea on who the next CEO will be or when will the board decide that?

Interesting… Is this Campbelltown telling Ashfield to stick it?

Happy, it would depend on the constitution adopted by the WT. if Campbelltown was a true 10% owner, I very much doubt they could hand the shares to another party without all parties agreeing. Normally the 10% would be distributed based on the ownership provenance, meaning 5% would go to Balmain as a 50% shareholder. Maybe Campbelltown has sold them to Ashfield for $1?

Meh.

What did Wests Campbelltown really do for the NRL club apart from make a motza 4 games a year at post match functions.

As they are no longer a partner I assume that arrangement ceases as well

If they pulled out of the Wests Group, I would agree with you, but they haven't. Wests Campbelltown is still a part of the Wests Group and the Wests Group holds 50% share of the Wests Tigers. There is no need to "sell" its seat to Ashfield, they have merely delegated their seat to Ashfield. As a member of the Wests Group, I would argue the potential liability (max $500,000) to the Wests Tigers could still be called upon if required. No funding from Wests Campbelltown to Wests Tigers has been required to date.

I think it would be a tad naiive to think that Wests Campbelltown has made this decision without consultation with Wests Ashfield. Therefore, in the end, it is just one less party coming to the board meetings. It was probably a bit of work for Wests Campbelltown and took up resources having to deal with the JV. With the Wests Group unified, Campbelltown is probably happy to delegate to Ashfield. Further, I am sure Ashfield is happy to take the seat….

My first reaction was of betrayal and disgust. It seems now that this may not be the case. I'm looking forward to Wests Campbelltown or Wests Tigers releasing a statement clarifying the situation. Anything would be better than the Doomsday crap that the Tele and Herald are coming out with.

Even more power to Wests Ashfield. Don't worry people, our future is safe.

Doesnt Campbelltown have greater Cash & Property Assets, or is that inner west site at Ashfield worth a motza?

Campbelltown had large amounts of cash on their balance sheet a couple of years back. It was about 80% equity. They have been buying golf clubs in the area, namely Camden Lakeside and the NSW Rugby League Golf Club. Previously discussed on this forum:

Ashfield continues to grow particularly after extensions/investment a couple of years back. Yes, worth a fair bit.

I think Ashfield is killing it, and they have for years. Asians love their gambling and this club has benefited alongside the Bulldogs leagues club.
Q. Even though Balmain are in debt, don't they have assets outweighing their debt.
And another thing, why don't Balmain transfer all their pokies to Wests Ashfield and rebrand the club Wests Tigers. I know it's easier said than done, but then Campbelltown leagues for Magpies juniors and say Ryde Eastwood for Balmain juniors.

Because its so far away, out in the middle of nowhere. Its amazing civilization is able to survive in a such a remote location. This is is the attitude of so many who live in inner Sydeny.
