THE mighty Magpies live on. After being close to extinction just months ago, Western Suburbs will now continue playing next season - in rugby league's third-tier competition.
Wests, a foundation club, had competed in the second-tier NSW Cup this year but did not win a match.
The club has agreed to drop back to the Bundy Cup - but at least the famous black and white jumper survives. Wests Tigers now send their fringe players to feeder club Balmain Ryde Eastwood.
"It's great the old Magpies live on," said David Gillespie, who played with Wests between 1991 and 1993\. "A lot of fans still love Western Suburbs. They are a famous club."
