THE mighty Magpies live on. After being close to extinction just months ago, Western Suburbs will now continue playing next season - in rugby league's third-tier competition.

Wests, a foundation club, had competed in the second-tier NSW Cup this year but did not win a match.

The club has agreed to drop back to the Bundy Cup - but at least the famous black and white jumper survives. Wests Tigers now send their fringe players to feeder club Balmain Ryde Eastwood.

"It's great the old Magpies live on," said David Gillespie, who played with Wests between 1991 and 1993\. "A lot of fans still love Western Suburbs. They are a famous club."

Not a completely accurate article.. But the mighty pies live on

The NSWRL has also confirmed the third-tier Bundaberg Cup will be re-named the Ron Massey Cup in response to the rum giant quitting its sponsorship at the end of this year.

So why doesn't the club at Campbelltown put any money into it ..games played at the ground brings people to the club! Sounds like that place wants the spoils and not put any thing in…

your lucky to get a handful of people to a stand alone bundy game , parents , family .
good to see wsm fielding a side.

Why couldn't the Bundy Cup side have fringe Wests Tigers NYC and NSW Cup players filter back through into the squad

The Broncos ,Cowboys and Titans do the same with using the Qld Cup teams as feeders

It would also help the Wests players with the exposure of playing with better quality players also

i believe bUNDY is played on a point system ,ie players are rated on experience and a side can only field a team with say no more than 100 points , so it wont be a team where a heap of top graders can come back through injury ,it will be made up of good park footballers …
Hillier oval used to be a great venue back in the days of a grade , when a grade was strong ,it used to pack out on local derby days ,i believe all saints have folded so it would be available , and the gym is right next door.

You could be right there 1/4… I understand this is why Wyong went straight for NSW Cup. Apparently they had the Brad Pitts up in Newcastle because they were on a 190k (or something like that) salary cap and they wanted to spend somewhere around the 450k range.

Has the Bundy Cup (Ron Massey Cup) confirmed a lineup for next year? There seems to be a bit of a realignment of open age RL in Sydney with a move towards Sydney-wide comps like Suburban Rugby. Makes sense to me to have the big boys playing similar teams rather than beating up weaker sides.

Any word on who the coach is and where the Magpies will be playing their home games? I'd imagine Leo would be a morale to get the gig if they twisted his arm hard enough.
