@Gary Bakerloo said:How would the merged entity in the state cup be funded? I am sure this structure has been put together.
Wests Ashfield pays for Western Suburbs and Balmain and Ryde Eastwood pays for B-RE team. Wests Ashfield does not provide any funding to Wests Tigers. The merging of the state cup team would produce cost savings and only one leagues club would have to provide funding. Is this an attempt to get the financial strength of Wests Ashfield directly involved with Wests Tigers or remove Ryde Eastwood from the equation?

Wests Tigers can't merge the State Cup teams as they don't own them. In fact its sorta the other way around. Only Wests and Balmain Football clubs at board level can decide this. The NSWRL is also trying to expand it's competition and the withdrawl of two of it's foundation clubs will be a major setback. A independent commission though might think otherwise.
Wests Tigers can however can limit the resources they provide (if any to Wests) and can decide on the allocation of the Wests Tigers contracted players.
Do I think it should happen? I once thought it was a good idea before the mickey mouse NYC competition was introduced. Financially it makes sense for all concerned but "decreasing the player pool" (Sheens own words) is a negative. Having another tier between NRL and NYC is also important especially with two junior leagues to accommodate. As long as Wests Ashfield are willing to fund Wests then if I had a vote I would vote against the merger at State Cup level.
What do I think will happen? Same thing as a few years ago. One team will get all the benefits and all the Wests Tigers contracted players whilst the other will be sent back to the cow paddock.

Staks, I think it is closer to happening than what you think. Dont be surprised if certain Board members on the Wests Leagues club boards and Football club board get the decision over the line.
The motive is one that you would not believe.

Stack the BRET team as a unified WT State Cup feeder, kick the Magpies out of the State Cup and send them off to Bundy Cup and they can be the feeder for BRET. This is the way it should always have been.

@alien said:Another reason why the Balmain half of the marriage would be more in favour of the 2 NSW Cup teams merging is eventually Ryde Eastwood Leagues will stop funding the Balmain NSW Cup side and when that happens there will be no Balmain side in NSW Cup. All the players in the Wests Tigers squad that don't make the firstgrade team would go to Western Suburbs Magpies. When Balmain get more money in the future they would probably want their own team back in the NSW Cup. You know it makes sense.
