Wests Magpies - Our last Local Junior to make it

We have all this talk about how good the Campbelltown juniors are etc etc but I was thinking really who was our last Macarthur area junior to make it in the NRL at Wests Tigers ?

I know he doesn't live in the area anymore but would Chris Lawrence (Eagle Vale St Andrews) be our last true Campbelltown junior to become an established first grader ?

EDIT - ah, just realised you meant tigers only - my bad - however all of these guys are quality examples of local talent

It is obvious to all that the Macarthur area is an excellent junior nursery, however the modern world it is more about a club ability to set up a number of "pathways" to the club and attract quality talent from other areas as well rather than the strength of your junior base.

That said I dont think for one moment we should neglect the junior league.

The Balmain junior league seems to punch above its weight in terms of producing players as well, they are obviously doing something well there these days.

It's cool mate was just thinking about it ..Would be great to do a Tinkler and have as many true locals in our team as possible.

Is fulton not a Magpie junior?? I was under the impression he came through the strong Magpies SG Ball/Flegg team

There is a few genuine local juniors from both sides of the JV that may make there way into NRL in 2013 if things go there way. (Tedessco, Sironen, NOafluma, Lovett)

Played for Wests but grew up in the Parramatta region (greystanes).

guess it poses the question how early do you have to grab them to count as a junior.

Not that it really matters tho I guess

Yeah Fulton started playing for AllSaints Liverpool with Gibbs & Issac DeGouis when they were all 16 in under 17\. Played S.G.Ball for Wests 2001 then of course he captained then to a premiership 2002\. So I suppose he is a local?

I think it would be fair to count any kid who plays Junior Reps below SG Ball as juniors and I would also include any kid who plays SG as a 17 year old (plays SG for 2 years).

We will never be able to do that. Most of our players are not even born in Sydney. If you are saying about a born and bred Wests Tigers local the most you could hope for would be 2 or 3 in the team at once.

Its a romantic old fashioned view (team full of juniors) but hardly practical.
The game now draws on players from all over the world…we need to expand our view - as we are - not blinker it.

We have a team in our 13s and 13 of them are in the rep training squad. The 14s have adopted a new summer training squad of players from wsjrl and group 6.The future is bright, there is some great young kids coming through our system .

Goose has hit the nail on the head, a club needs to open up a number of pathways to recruit players to ensure they are competitive. The juniors are always important and at the very least should be supported to ensure RL lives at grass roots level. There is not enough support from the league governing bodies for clubs surviving on recruiting their juniors alone, clubs with low junior bases have a vested interest in this approach, that said, it wouldn't be fair to restrict juniors to their senior club alone as that approach limits their opportunities as well.
