Wests Tigers candidate Ivan Cleary admits he misses NRL coaching

Bad news boys…...

The Wests Tigers board have moved against their newly-appointed coach Ivan Cleary, sacking him on his first day in the job.
Cleary was appointed to the role late last night but was asked to pack up his desk only an hour after stocking that same desk with all of his things.
Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe didn’t hold back his disappointment regarding Clearly when interviewed a short time ago.
“We just didn’t feel as though he (Cleary) was going to win us any games and we aren’t prepared to let this club drift and be unsuccessful,” Mr Pascoe said.
When asked why the club’s board bothered to appoint Cleary if they were just going to sack him anyway, the CEO appeared remorseful.
“That’s what makes this so difficult,” he said.
Cleary’s record at the Tigers is set to remain 0-0, ironically the best winning percentage of his coaching career.
The Tigers say they will have further news on which coach they plan to sack next by early April.

I'm hoping Cleary starts ASAP. I also believe he might have had some input prior and might already have an idea on which players he wants for 2018 and beyond.
He does come to the club in a better position than Potter and JT. JT and club management have started the process of fixing up the salary cap mess and it's unfortunately JT won't get the chance to build his team. However although I have supported him as coach the one thing he hasn't been able to achieve is to fix the defence. Cleary's first tasks would be to improve this aspect as well as trying to get the best out of Brooks and Moses.
It will be interesting to see what transpires in the coming months. With JT's sacking all eyes are now not just on who will be coach but how the players respond as they play for contracts.
I've had enough of the 'Big 4' rubbish in the media and how much they want. Let's see what they can produce now with a new coach.

I hope he is appointed soon too.

I feel sorry for JT in respect that he and the club said from day one that there was cap issues and they would be sorted for full tilt in 2018\. The planning for that starts now and its a luxury JT never had. I think we have all moved on but love him or hate him, JT didnt make it far enough to get the benefit of that.

If i was a conspircay theorist, I'd suggest that this was always the plan, JT comes in cheap and makes some hard calls so the board doesnt have blood on their hands, and then one of the youngest, brightest coaching prospects who everyone seems to rate (but mysteriously cant get a job so he is in a holding pattern) happens to be a in the right place at the right time to start planning head long for 2018 with a clean cap.

I love it when a plan comes together.

It's the best appointment we could have made.
Thats not to mean he will be a success.
Coaches have been a graveyard for Wests Tigers.
However Lets give him a chance.
Ivan has walked into a better situation then Taylor and Potter. In terms of control over the roster.
However I can't see him turning this season around dramatically. We just have zero depth.

Yes Eddie

Make sure you back whoever they make coach , they at least deserve that until they prove otherwise

There will be no pressure on Cleary from the club, the length of the contract if true would suggest that they see this year as a watershed year with Cleary to decide on the playing roster from 2018\. He gets a team that is sitting at the bottom of the table so if he gets them to 15 or 14 it would be an improvement. The only hate for him will come from fans and media.

14th or 15th will be going so far backwards from last year it's not even funny. And no, Cleary wouldn't get any heat from the club, but you just know there would be a section of brain dead supporters who would want to lynch him if he doesn't bring instant results.

I cant wait for the time Cleary has a bad result and the fans and supporters light the forum up like the Sydney Opera House ..with… Cleary cant coach, poor decision, should have kept Taylor longer, our salary cap isn't right yet,we need to find backrowers and centres, the clubs admin are a rabble, etc etc etc....
but don't forget this group of the big four..Brooks and Moses should be the first Cleary puts on notice...
for the rest of us we need to aquire some patience and lets sees what transpires from here in....

Cleary will be judged on his performance just like the players are TT. You never let the halves escape when they have a poor performance and your not alone. A poor team performance is the responsibilty of coach and players just like the wins are also owned by both.
I think everybody would like to see an harmonious relationship between coach and players built on mutual respect. Im hoping Cleary will bring that along with addressing the glaring deficiencies in our game. I also feel that he will be able to attract players to our team based on his coaching history and his professionalism.
I think his (proposed )appointment is the most positive action made by the club for as long as I can remember and the sooner he starts the better.
Not expecting miracles and can guarantee I will never be saying we should have kept Taylor regardless of results.

Fair comments Telltales, the only thing I meant by' we should of kept Taylor',was to let him complete his tenure..he did it tough for the first 2 years as did the team, with Ballin coming back as well as ET, the next couple of rounds may have been different, anyway he is finished now and we must look forward not back…

What sort of salary will Cleary command?
We still paying 250k for JT.
One thing the club is good at is wasting money that we don't supposedly have.

I think most of us will be able to cop what happens on the field this year so long as we retain who we want and pick up some quality on the open market. I'm feeling optimistic about how we set ourselves up for 2018.

Doesn't Cleary still have a position at the NRL ??

He might need to tie up any loose ends in this position and find a replacement before anything happens

Maybe he will ghost Webster in 2017 while really sinking his teeth into recruitment and retention for 2018 alongside Egan

I too am feeling optimistic in Regards to 2018 .
With a new coach on board and fact we might even sign up some half decent players for a change .

Pretty pumped for this weekends game also …
Will the players run out onto the field all upset cause they loved JT , or will they rip in knowing their future is on the line ?

Don't get too excited , they are between coaches …...

No consequences either way ....when it gets tough ....

I'm looking forward to the Storm game as well Hobs,I don't care if they loved JT or not,if they rip in because their future is on the line, then it shows how weak they are, because the should have ripped in every game, that's what they get big salaries for…

One thing that may have been missed in all of this ..the Stakeholders are no longer restricted in how much funds they can tip in for operational expenses..Under the previous constitution each stakeholder (Wests/Balmain) the could only provide funds equal to what the other could afford to cover the operational loss of the Wests Tigers..

Wests Ashfield now have control of that debt and have the financial muscle and means to provide what is needed…whoever they decide..

Your spot on TT …
The onus is now on the players , no more friggin excuses !
Every game here on in should consist of a do or die attitude !

Unless Webster makes them play some sort of
"Websterball" style

If Cleary does come in, hopefully he brings an entire coaching team with him. ISP cup and U20's are both going horribly this year.

Dream big.
New ideas will have to do for the moment

I say let Cleary start as Head Coach next Webster (who has had much experience coaching Brooks/Moses) as the Assistant Coach who would focus on fine tuning the Brooks/Moses combination in attack and defence.

Not sure how this works. The view seems to be that these two are shams that have not improved and aren't consistent first graders, but we should keep someone based on the fact that they got them to this point?

They're 22, how long til they bloody hit their straps? Cleary kicked on at 18 for christs sake. You don't have 60 horrible first grade games and then all of a sudden become Andrew Johns.

It's not going to happen, Moses MIGHT, Brooks certainly not.

Let them go.
