Welcome to the latest Wests Tigers CEO Update ahead of this Friday night’s beyondblue Round 14 clash with South Sydney at ANZ Stadium. As always there has been plenty happening here at Wests Tigers, with a host of activities to report on from both on and off the field.
Firstly I’d like to encourage all Members to get out to ANZ Stadium on Friday for a very important night for Wests Tigers. The game marks our first ever beyondblue Round as we raise awareness for the vital work that beyondblue does in the community.
We’re very proud of our partnership with beyondblue and look forward to helping to raise awareness and much needed funds on Friday night. You’ll notice that we’ll be running out in blue socks for the game and will have a range of activities happening on and off the field throughout the night.
Since my last update the Club has had mixed results on the field with consistency proving to be elusive. The team broke a six match losing streak with a win against South Sydney before a disappointing loss to the Bulldogs, before putting together back-to-back wins against Newcastle and the Broncos. Unfortunately the Roosters were just too good in atrocious conditions on Sunday afternoon but the side is looking forward to getting back out on the field on Friday night.
I’d like to thank all of you who have attended one or more of our home games so far this year, your support has been amazing. The players have all commented that they’ve noticed a real lift in the crowd’s involvement this year and that your energy is lifting them. Our home crowds are up more than 30% this year with the Club working hard to ensure that there is as much entertainment off the field as there is on it. We’ve still got five home games left for 2016 with some great activities planned so I encourage you all to get out and enjoy a day at the footy.
In recent weeks we’ve had some very exciting signing and re-signing news, all of which point to a bright future for the Club. The first of these was the welcome addition of Elijah Taylor to Wests Tigers. Elijah has quickly made his presence known at the Club and has fitted in exceptionally well, which I’m sure you’re all well aware of! I’m really proud of the work that the Club has done in recent weeks to secure a number of exciting players that will be a part of this team well into the future. We’re building a strong, core group of players that have all bought into the direction that this Club is heading. In recent weeks we’ve had Luke Brooks, Mitchell Moses, Chris Lawrence, Curtis Sironen, Tim Simona, JJ Felise, Michael Chee Kam and Josh Aloiai all commit to Wests Tigers. The future is bright Wests Tigers Members!
Off the field it was great to see the Club’s ownership structure resolved recently with Wests and Balmain agreeing to a deal that will secure the future of the Club. The ownership structure sees Wests move to 75% ownership with Balmain retaining 25% and the Board expanded to nine directors. Wests will hold five positions, Balmain has two positions, with the remaining two positions being filled by Independent Directors. Marina Go will remain as the Chair of the Wests Tigers. This is a significant outcome for the Wests Tigers and ensures stability into the future for this great club. I would like to commend both Wests and Balmain for the way that they have conducted themselves during the process and have worked in complete collaboration in the best interest of the Wests Tigers and I welcome the new Board into the future.
As you would have heard over the last few months we’ve reached some major Membership milestones this year and I would like to thank you all for the part that you have played in that. First we cracked through the 10,000 Member mark, then we reached our all-time record and now we are quickly closing in on 14,000 Members. As I’ve said over and over again our Members are incredibly important to the Club and I would like to thank you for your continued support of the Club. We will continue to strive to engage with all Members and fans with transparency and authenticity to ensure the experience for you is unrivalled amongst our competitors.
I would also like to introduce a new Corporate Partner for the club. Handy Finance have joined Wests Tigers for the coming two years and as a part of the agreement will feature on our playing jerseys. We look forward to working closely with Handy Finance to help them grow their brand, as well as providing some great benefits to our Members.
As always we have been very active in our local communities since my last update. As I’ve said many times before our community programs are incredibly important to Wests Tigers. We are more than just games of football on the weekend. We have an opportunity to help improve the lives of those we interact with on a daily basis and we will strive to have a positive impact on our entire community.
In recent weeks our NRL squad visited The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, and were able to put smiles on the faces of some seriously ill children. We also hosted a beyondblue Bash at Concord Oval, took part in National Simultaneous Story Time and spent a night with the Junior Clubs throughout the South-West of Sydney.
We’re also putting the final touches on a very special fundraising event to be held shortly. Following the storms over the weekend Picton was severely hit, with widespread damage throughout the region. We’re organising a charity walk from Concord Oval to Picton to raise much needed funds for repairs. Stay tuned for more details on the event and how to donate.
Finally I would like to address all our Members about the media coverage that you would have seen in this past week. I will continue to reiterate that unless you see myself or Marina Go quoted it is pure speculation. We have worked too hard on and off the field to now compromise the position of this organisation by allowing media speculation and innuendo to get the better of us all. We will not buy into speculation and will not be forced to spend time defending ourselves in the media.
