Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter says he won't walk out

Potter will be at the club unless the black & gold part of the WT board can unanimously convince the black & white side of the WT board to terminate him as the players have not bonded with him..

Madness if that ever happens..

At least, unlike some of the sooks on here, I'll renew my membership no matter who the coach is.

If you want your money to be pissed away paying for three coaches next year, good luck to you.

May he clear the dressing room of those petulant enough to have fallen out with him in such a short time.
Even if that does include Farah.

Yeah thanks …. We'll be thinking of you.

I tihnk we owe it to Mick Potter to give him another season. He is showing some real backbone and making some real changes. I think with this review, hopefully Mick can work on some of the aspects of his communication that might have been a bit rookie like this year. However having come through the year from hell, you learn a lot more sometimes that way.

These sort of experiences are tough and they can steel people and make them even better coaches. I just hope that the Tigers senior guys have the common sense to give him another go. I think if we can go from 6 wins to say 10 next year, with some real cabage to spend in 2015, and a real direction with the way we want to recruit when by 2015 we could really see a great turnaround.

No you've got it's all wrong ….. If you can't take it then don't dish it out.
You seem incapable of debating a point of indifference without reverting to calling people a girl, a hypocrite, a 10 year old ...... If that's not playing the man I don't know what is.
The forums about freedom of speech .... If you don't like my comments on Mayer or Potter .... Well that just the way it is..... But I won't get down into the gutter with you though .... I'll leave that for you.

Bulldog's Bite: Wests Tigers CEO Grant Mayer puts end to speculation about Mick Potter's future

A JITTERY Wests Tigers board is becoming anxious about sacking Mick Potter - the under-siege coach now set to remain at Concord for another season.

Faced with a fan backlash, the ten-man board is poised to end speculation and grant Potter another season in charge.

Wests Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer on Monday conducted this tell-all interview inside his Concord Oval office where he discussed Potter, Benji Marshall, Tim Sheens, Robbie Farah and the club’s dysfunctional board.

Bulldog: Let’s not muck around Grant. Will Mick Potter be here next year?

Mayer: Absolutely. He has a contract for 2014 and I have no doubt he will be here.

Bulldog: You are saying that as CEO but, with all due respect, it’s not your decision - it’s a board decision.

Mayer: There are two areas the joint venture board agree on - the CEO and coach. In this instance, the CEO is appointed, that’s me, and the coach is here until the end of next season. I have no reason to think that will change.

Bulldog: But if it’s a board decision, how can you guarantee he will be here next year?

Mayer: How do I know?

Bulldog: Yes.
Wests Tigers Press Conference

Mayer: Because the board has given every indication he will be here in 2014.

Bulldog: You say that but quite obviously there are rumblings about Potter at board level. You cannot deny that.

Mayer: The fact we are losing football games isn’t helpful. The fact we are coming 15th in a 16 team competition always raises questions. However Mick has set a path and, remember, he has taken over from a coach who had been here a long time. Mick has brought different attitudes and training standards to this club. No doubt there have been rumblings but I have every confidence he will set it through.

Bulldog: Can you confirm those rumblings are from board members and not the media.

Mayer: Not at all. From what I read in the newspapers, there are no quotes in these stories and no people behind it. Until I am given some rock-solid information, for me it is simply addressing the facts, not speculation.

Bulldog: Does Mick have to look at himself in regards to the poor season?

Mayer: Absolutely. And I think Mick is his harshest critic when it comes to certain aspects about how he has addressed things. Remember, he inherited a club with one week’s notice. He has come in very hard and tried to change things very quickly. There is no doubt, as part of his evolution, he needs to address how he handles certain situations and his communication style is one area where he admits he needs to be look at.

Bulldog: Surely the club couldn’t afford to pay three coaches?

Mayer: Mick is here next year. Affordability is one thing, the other is Mick has a contract for next year.
Potter could get the punt

Bulldog: Do you have dysfunctional board?

Mayer: Not at all. From my experience with the board over the past six weeks, it has been very good. They have a clear desire to improve Wests Tigers. A lot of the work they have done over the past six months is starting to show. There is no doubt they agree that looking at a modern governance structure is imperative. And we have been very clear in seeking some advice on that from the NRL. That has been on-going for the past few months.

Bulldog: The Benji Marshall video. You have had time to digest it. What are your thoughts?

Mayer: Disappointing. I don’t think I have shifted my opinion. It’s not something any fan of Wests Tigers would like to see. The fact he is still wearing our colours and chose to don another club’s jersey before the end of the season is disappointing.

Bulldog: Surely your jumper sponsors would be filthy?

Mayer: I haven’t fielded any questions or phone calls on that but I think they would be quietly disappointed as well.

Bulldog: What is your relationship with Marshall?

Mayer: I am the CEO and he is a player. Unfortunately for both of us I have only come on very recently. He has been here a long time and no doubt he had great relationship with coaches, CEO’s and chairmen in the past. We just haven’t had time to develop that same relationship.

Bulldog: Do you feel the mood of your fans has shifted and they are now happy for him to go?
Mick Potter

Mayer: That’s probably a question for the fans, to be fair. I think there are a lot of people who respect what he has done for the club. He has had 11 years here and, in many ways, he has helped build this club so he goes with our best wishes. I tend to think the way it has been played out over the past few months has been difficult for all.

Bulldog: Like him or not, it is a sad exit for Marshall.

Mayer: No doubt, it is sad. I guess the only thing that gives us hope going forward is that we have some great kids coming through the system. Somewhere amongst that there will be another Benji Marshall. That’s the way rugby league works.

Bulldog: Should Benji be dropped due to poor form?

Mayer: That’s not my call, that’s a coaching call.

I'll happily renew for 2014 as long as Potter is not sacked. Just as I happily renewed last year when Sheens was punted.

Instead of taking a snide swipe at other members, maybe you should try and understand where they are coming from.

Well said as always Eddie.

I hope our senior players are man enough to sort out any differences they have with Potter over the off season and move forward.

He does understand where they are comin from.

He thinks they are going on like sooks,,,,its pretty clear to me.

And frankly I agree. This forum is full of the strangest tanty throwing bunch.

The big issues will be attracting talent , if the melodramas which we are faced with now are still circling when we are looking at spending the million dollars we have left in cap space for 2015 are still about we won't have anyone even prepared to talk turkey , let alone sign on the dotted line

Also attracting new sponsors and keeping the current ones happy is the bigee,Board has to be seen to be doing something,Potter will be gone by mid-season if the Tiges have a bad start to 2014 so if my mail is correct they are looking at who could take over.

If he has fallen out with the dressing room and they let him stay on, it will only flare up again.
United we stand divided we fall …. If the players don't want him then it won't work no matter how good a coach he is.

100% with you on this!

You guys ever been managers before? Sometimes the troops get restless because the manager is hopeless, but just as often the troops get restless because the manager is very good and putting them under the spotlight.

I wouldn't assume that certain whinging players / leaks to media are evidence that Potter can't do his job. Let us not forget last year all the rubbish that played out when Sleau and Heighno were released - unfortunately we are a club at the moment where everything plays out in the media.

Compare, for example, to the Doggies who underwent such enormous issues like the rape allegations 2004, SBW exit, sexist comments after the GF, salary cap breaches etc. So little of their inner politics played out in the media, esp once they'd parted ways with Wille Mason and his big mouth.

Bottom line is players look after themselves and if they can sacrifice the coach to take pressure of themselves, you can be sure that they'll do it! (you only have to look at us last year and how quickly they turned on Sheensie)

Not sure I get what you're saying. If we keep Potter we run the risk of another player revolt but if I read you correctly you would rather keep the coach and risk losing the players. What do you think will happen if we don't win many of our first say 8 or 9 games ? I reckon there's a better than even money chance it will be all on again.

What I am saying is you don't chuck out every boss / manager / coach early just because the employees get frustrated. Football is still a workplace and you can't please everyone all the time.

The major issue this forum had with Sheens was that we seemed to have a soft "boys club", with little consequence for poor performance (i.e. repeated selection) and an inability to win tough matches / do the little things correctly under pressure.

If this is indeed true, if the players weren't mentally tough enough to win ugly and play consistently, then the replacement coach is going to have to make some major changes to right the ship. In a results-based industry, he's going to have to get players out of their comfort zones.

Any workpace that undergoes major change is going to ruffle the feathers of the employees. When you bring in new management to set the company in a new direction, you don't sack them after 12 months just because the employees didn't like the new approach. As Mayer has said in recent interviews, sometimes there is short-term pain when a business restructures. Nevertheless, employees should have the expectation that they will come under scrutiny if they do not produce results / performance for the business. Nobody here can argue taht the team is producing results at the moment.

And if the precedent is set that players have the power to oust management, then all future management is undermined.

Let us also not forget that Potter has only been at the helm for 1 year, but many of the current roster are long-term players. This team has under-performed for a long period of time, with occasional highlights. Surely that trend reflects mostly on the long-standing aspects of the club (long-serving players, team culture, training methods, board structure, merger, facilities) rather than the guy who has been coach for just 12 months?

It's hard to know exactly what is going on at Concord in regard to Potter and his relationship with the players and whoever else matters, that said, based on what is read and reported and the fact Potter took over a team and setup not of his doing then imo it is fair to let him continue into the second year of his contract. The young blokes who have been given a chance are doing well in the main and with the release of some senior players who no longer fit in, things should pick up next year, the ball will be in Potter's court and I hope he does well.

Groat would have to be one player who is offside with the coach. I can't understand why he hasn't been given a go.
The club brought him down as a 16 year old and paid for his schooling etc and now after all that his being let go without being given a run in 2013.
