Look champion @Jolls, you realize I have to read these posts twice just to get things sorted in my head! 😉

Seriously, great work and thanks for all the info. ✅
🤣 🤣 No worries, probably a little outdated but kicking is still kicking, and we leave it to half backs to execute so it can't be that hard!!

I think there’s 3 pretty simple to fix issues with our kicking game over recent seasons.

• effort on kick chase (which is a barometer for will to win), something that will get you wooden spoons if it’s not up to scratch. On a few occasions such as last weekend, Bula’s improved effort has lead to chances created or converted. No reason this can’t be repeated more often and should be a not negotiable in FG.

• better organisation on play 5, the cross play to Twal and subsequent slow play the ball has also been a staple in our attack in recent years. The following kick is normally under pressure and not executed.

• Use of the kick into no man’s land (See the regular Nanai tries for NQ) . It’s a trend in the game we rarely exploit. Sam Fainu is a tall skilled guy who could benefit from the tactic.

I agree with those three but think we simply fail to control momentum and we have done so for years. Api occasionally gets on the front foot with a kick from the ruck but we don't seem to have a 20/40 plan to get us out of trouble and we very rarely attempt a 40/20. The Twal tackle 5 option may be part of the problem with how we end our sets but our long kicking game is well below average and I think our short kicking game is only just on par.

The kicking side of the house is an individual skill that is executed in a collective environment so we need to get our guys some help to get them from where they are - barely passable - to top 4. If that is what we want to be we need to have it in all areas of our game.

Yeah, you raise some good points looking at the bigger picture. I was just pointing out some quick wins which don’t rely too much on gaining momentum, which is huge in the modern game and I agree wholeheartedly that it’s a major problem for us.

I mean it could be as simple a kicking for touch when we are out on our feet and dawdling to the scrum (ensuring we beat the shot clock). But how much better could we be if we had someone kick an early set 20/40 and get the ball back. As soon as we do that the wingers will not be up in the line and vulnerable to an early shift. We need to get inside the mids of the opposition as much as we need to bust bodies with our defence.

All these guys can play or they wouldn't be there. In my opinion it is the smart ones that make the real difference between top 4 and the rest! Luai has the traits - I think he just needs someone to show him what he needs to look like in a Tigers team. I wonder if he has time for coffee this week! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

we have been putting in some very ordinary kicks lately out side of the red zone 20's . Looks like there hail Mary's
You would almost have to wonder if we een train for them (although I'm sure we do).

I mean we see the better sides have a kick option where they target a post, a kick opion to the centre left and right and one to each wing that they pull off at the drop of a hat.

Luais; kick for in behind for the runner is pretty good but anything in the air seems like a bot of a lottery.

Jolls don;t get me started on the lack of kicking knowledge in this club ,its a very simple task . LOL 1/2 of our long range touch footy tries start of with confusion of who kicks on the 5th if they rush up on us

So much of good kicking is timing and technique. Watch Cleary, Moses etc they nail it for 2 reasons, practice and technique .
Our 5th tackle high kicks by Luai are quite often ordinary, need to change it up a bit.
40/20, find the grass, challenge on all high kicks and perfect inside 20 ( attack) grubbers etc.

Were you a half HB1?

No mate, full back/ centre/ winger- but I was a kicker, and whilst a toe poker, I did all right. Not so much kicking in general play then, but the two golden rules used to be 1) find the grass where possible putting the opposition on the back foot and 2 ) always catch the ball on the full.

I played a few games in the halves as injury cover but certainly don't have the expereince to speak first hand on how best to manage momentum. I have coached it and it makes sense to me, but it would be great to get input from a half that did it week in week out.

Just a thought bubble - so no need for a commitment.

I've been thinking about doing a deep dive position by position over the offseason with a view to asessing our roster agaisnt it to identify deficiences that need to be addressed. I was wondering, if I built out a template, would people with experience in the positions take the lead in fleshing them out.

Thoughts?
