WESTS Tigers have declined to offer Benji Marshall an extens

I like this new hard line approach by the club. May cost us short term, but finally seems like they are taking the bulls by the horns on many fronts…. I expect it to shed blood somewhere along the line, but at least they are being pro-active, and calling simmering frustrations to the fore.

This is just the biggest load of rubbish. You could be forgiven for thinking he was off-contract at the end of this yr instead of having another 2 yrs to go. Whats the hurry? Concentrate on your form you bloody prima donna

Beautiful. Lets see how it works out. Good luck to the club and the players

Well on the upside at least Mayer, Potter et al seem to facing up some pretty long-term issues. Things are pretty crap at the moment but there at least appears to be some sort of plan for the future.

Yep sounds to me like we are slowly digging our way out of a deep hole.

Looks like marshal isn't going anywhere until his contract is up in 2015\. He'd be a mug to turn that offer down, there simply isn't anyone else out there that's going to pay him any more than WT.

* REVELATIONS they are still carrying ex-players Andrew Fifita, Bryce Gibbs, Todd Payten, Chris Heighington and Wade McKinnon on their 2013 salary cap.

Wade as well? really? that is just pathetic, poor management.

Toddy Payten ? He retired! How would that be part of the salary cap?

That was my thought. Puts the facts into question.

I am a bit nervous now that benji can just leave… Seeing as I've grown up with him/awesome player and deserves the one club name.. But it's a good call and maybe THIS is the kick up the bum!

No tough decisions or hard line stances by the club here, just stupidity and reality of what is happening and what Potter is up against. The good thing about it all is if what we read is true Mayer should be applauded for being upright and honest with the supporters.

The point of no return. If, as he says, he's going to concentrate on his game, this should improve his focus better that a few minutes on the bench.

It makes sense if he still had a contract when you retired. Say Payton had a contract for 2010 @ $50k, 2011 @ 50k, then 2012 @ 200k . He is forced to retire at the end of 2011 (or would be sitting on the bench for the season). The club would still need to pay his $200k, they can get him coaching or whatever, but they would still need to keep it under the cap.

Otherwise you would have clubs just contracting players for millions after they retire.

I'm glad the club is starting to finally get its act together. I like their moves at the moment. Sign brooks and Moses up first on long term deals and don't extend benji until he has proven he can be an asset again.

Keep it simple. If in 2 years, he is a better option than brooks. Resign him which will most likely mean we sacrifice brooks. If brooks is better, then we need to let benji go.

I'm all for loyalty, but his brainsnaps and defence are losing us games. We cant carry that for another 5+ years.

Keep up the good work Meyer & potter!

Very sensible and reasoned comments. The club is starting to get its act together now that sheens has gone.i can only hope that Royce Skando and Georgallis are also given the punt at the end of the year and Potter gets the people he wants.

In a disastrous year positive things are staring to happen

Does anyone have a link to this article?

Seems a little bit of a fairy tale in some parts?

Nothing really new here eh except for the news on Brooks/Moses.
Seems weve heard all this before.

Im glad we're looking to sort everything out…we're in a deep hole and its going to take time.
I dont like the publicity of us deciding to not honour contracts - rightly or wrongly its never a good look.
Makes potential recruits think twice, at least now Humptys gone the history of his actions during moltzen saints debacle is gone too

Glad to hear some sanity is prevailing with Marshall too from those in charge

Its funny I hear many say **sheens should walk because he said he would.**.
Marshall also said he'd never play under anyone but sheens....but then had his contract altered when he changed his mind
If only Humpty had gotten Sheens to sign to those prophetic words...we wouldnt be in this mess, but an off the cuff comment isnt a contract

I dunno how sensible it is to sign untried kids to long term contracts…..I think this is even more riskier than what weve been doing in the past that got us to where we are now

I think with the hype surrounding both of them and the fact that a halves combination of their ability has … well ... never that I can ever remember come up from so deep within the juniors together; offering them a long and decent contract at this stage is probably the only way we can be sure to keep them. The hounds would be all over both of them no doubt and with Marshall playing like a busted and the Tigers overall looking like a pack of shot ducks taking a gamble on them seems reasonable.

I like how there is no quotes in the article at all though except for one where Mayer says that the Tigers rate the youngsters. If that salary cap stuff is true that's pretty damn stupid. I can't see how that's true though.

I would say with how things are moving along that Potter has been given the job security for 2014 by the board. Signing these two young guys is a win/ win , I cannot believe some would question this as the money for a few years pales to the huge contracts for many that are not worth feeding. I would image Marshall should be happy with the upgraded money as promised and with employment for a further 2 seasons on big money, realistically no one would sign any player of that age to a contract after 2015 …2 seasons in the NRL is a very long time
