Wests Tigers ownership structure confirmed

There's no doubt about that. A capitulation by Balmain but in the spirit (allegedly) of securing the immediate future of Wests Tigers. A sad, sad end for the black and gold of Balmain. Somebody (or some people) stuffed up but will never pay the price that they should do. Those more informed than me will know who they are, but I hope they never grace the doors of Wests Tigers again.

I think you both may be on different wavelengths…might be wrong

Im generally okay with the ownership adjustment. That is fair. Magpies are contributing more at this point in time. Have a real problem with some of the new additions to the Board, one in particular.

Mike is back…

Good to see 2 independents and an Independent Chair...Moving forward as one Wests Tigers...

No problem with Mike. The other returnee is a disgrace.

Who is the "other returnee" you refer to? And, why is it "a disgrace"?

You could imagine that the 8.5mill is to pay off the debt and also give the enough money to ensure there commitments for the next "x" years. This ways they can focus on getting there club back up and running without debt hanging over there heads disabling them from doing any business. If they cannot get up and running in "x" Years then you would imagine they forfeit the remaining quarter share in the club as there would be an obvious end to rozelle and other matters by that time.

Yeah - your right Ink

LCA - yeah, not talking about the Balmain demise mate. But that's certainly an issue too. I'm talking about our governance taking a massive backwards step. We've now got the leagues clubs running the show again without any gate keepers… We'll be in the papers again, like Parra, in no time.

Frustratingly Balmain directors have probably done this again to try to stay as part of the club. Stubborn idiots. They should have surrendered and sold lock stock to a private buyer. 3-2-2 was perfect.

Anyway, I've harped on about it enough. Now we've just got to pray on blind luck that we get some competent directors, now and into perpetuity.

I cant see Mick Liubinskas being comfortable in black white & orange

I just saw Tommy in a WTs shirt.
Things may just be changing for the better.
Credit to JT he is getting some old legends on board

I don't know about that. From all reports, he sorted out the football club and resolved the relationship with Wests Ashfield. As we know, Ashfield is right behind Wests Tigers.

I did see Tommy there last night. A cynic could say that JT timed Tommy's involvement with the ownership announcement…...

As an old Balmain supporter,if this restructure progresses the Wests Tigers in more rewarding and financial position with greater success, then I have absolutely no problems with it…Also keeping the Balmain share is a recognition of the original foundation clubs that formed this great club, both sides of the JV should be applauded for their inputs and sacrifices over the years to keep this JV alive and hopefully well.....congratulations to all concerned, let's now move on and make this club greater beyond all expectations...

Balmain put out a statement last night as well. Similar to the one from WT but a few more details:

_We are pleased to announce that Wests and Balmain have agreed on an $8.5 million deal that will ensure the financial future of Wests Tigers and ensure Balmain’s future participation in the joint venture continuing Balmain’s involvement in the highest level of Ruby League since 1908.\
\
The deal, which determines Wests Tigers ownership and future contributions, ensures Wests Tigers’ long term viability.\
\
As many members and supporters of our club would know, we have been through some significant financial distress in the past few years. This has included us having to return the lease for Leichhardt Oval to Leichhardt Council and negotiate a loan with the NRL to remain a part of the Wests Tigers joint venture.\
\
Balmain Tigers are very happy and grateful to the Wests Magpies and Wests Ashfield Leagues Club for their generosity in acting as guarantors for our remaining share in Wests Tigers. We would also like to thank them for their role in securing the operational and financial viability of Wests Tigers over the past four years.\
\
Balmain Tigers would also like to thank the NRL for their assistance through this lengthy process and their generosity in extending the loan terms.\
\
This outcome is an extremely positive one for Balmain Tigers and for Wests Tigers, particularly given the alternative would have seen Balmain exit from the joint venture and cease a 108-year involvement with top level professional rugby league in Australia.\
\
The new ownership structure sees Wests move to 75% ownership with Balmain retaining 25% and the Board expanded to nine directors. Balmain has two Board positions, Wests has five Board positions with the remaining two positions being filled by Independent Directors.\
\
Balmain wish to express their thanks to Lucio Di Bartolomeo who has now stood down from the Wests Tigers Board. Lucio’s contributions over the past 20 months have been exceptional.\
\
Balmain Tigers would like to stress to members that the new ownership structure is not a takeover of the joint venture by Western Suburbs. In addition to two board positions, Balmain Tigers will also have an equal say in making recommendations to the full Board in all key decision making processes through the joint venture’s three board sub committees – Football (One Balmain representative and one Wests representative), Audit and Risk (One Balmain representative, one Wests representative and one independent) and Nominations (One Balmain representative, one Wests representative and one independent).\
\
Wests has acknowledged Balmain’s contribution to the joint venture since 2000 including their integrity in preserving their long history. Both Wests and Balmain are founding 1908 Clubs which, together, will continue to build a proud future for Wests Tigers.\
\
Balmain Tigers look forward to working with Wests and the independent directors to make Wests Tigers a force on and off the field in the NRL for many years to come.\
\
The nine members of the new Wests Tigers Board are:\
\
Marina Go (Chair & Independent Director), James Myatt (Balmain), Simon Cook, Michael Liubinskas, Rick Wayde, Tony Andreacchio, Mike Bailey, Rosemary Sinclair (Independent Director) and Danny Stapleton (Balmain)._

Balmain still have the chance to by back the 25 percent at a later date when the money is there that was the deal that was getting spoken about just a few months ago I don't think it has changed at all

There was a newspaper article weeks ago that suggested that may be the case (ie, take their ownership from 25% back to 50%) but that hasn't been mentioned since. And it definitely would have been in the statement Balmain released if that was part of the deal so I'd confidently say it's not. In fact the statement thanks WAL for being gaurantor for their remaining 25%; which is strange because some of the press releases say the NRL debt is now clear - so who does Balmain have a loan with? WA must have paid out the entire $5.4m debt and given Balmain 25% with repayment terms. I guess it becomes a lot clearer for WA if Balmain can't pay back the loan because than Balmains 25% reverts to them rather than the NRL.
This was reported as an $8.5m deal so perhaps it's $5.4 NRL loan paid off plus than Balmains owes $2.7 (and interest) to Wests Ashfield. Starting to get in the order of $8.5m

TBF we could just have easily ended up with incompetent private owners - like Tinkler, say, or the clowns running Manly nowadays. Let's face it, football clubs aren't democracies. The fans are just peasants paying their taxes and hoping against hope that the lord of the manor is competent enough to train a decent army to defend our hovels, rich enough to afford it and benevolent enough to want to.
