Wests Tigers Poach David Warwick as recruitment manager from St George Illawarra Dragons

The Wests Tigers have poached respected recruitment guru David Warwick to help tie down four of their highest profile stars as the scramble for the signatures of skipper Aaron Woods, NSW No.1 James Tedesco and boom halves Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks heats up.

Warwick, who spent a decade at Manly helping build a formidable roster for Des Hasler and Geoff Toovey at the perennial finalists, will join the Tigers after just 12 months in the role of recruitment manager at the Dragons.

And one of his first priorities will be to help the Tigers' newly-appointed general manager of football, Kelly Egan, with negotiations to keep their superstar quartet at Concord beyond 2017.

Egan, formerly Hasler's right-hand man at the Bulldogs, only reverted to the off-field role after replacing Mark O'Neill in November.

It means Egan and Warwick will be charged with the responsibility of keeping together the nucleus of a roster which has shown promise and came within a win of making the finals last year under Jason Taylor.

But there are no shortage of suitors for the Tigers' top cubs. Woods and Tedesco are likely NSW regulars, while Blues legend Brad Fittler has urged Moses and Brooks to join them.

The protracted Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations means Egan and Warwick will have their work cut out bedding down any deals in the immediate future, but Egan said it was "at the top end of his inbox" to tie down the Tigers' headline acts.

Warwick's appointment at the Tigers means he will replace Warren McDonnell, who has joined Hasler as part of a backroom shake-up at Belmore and a recruitment merry-go-round over summer.

The Dragons are in the process of bolstering their recruitment team given Warwick's exit, but are in no rush after director of rugby league pathways, Ian Millward, and Warwick inked almost all of their most promising young players to long-term deals as part of a renewed focus on their junior nursery.

Skipper Gareth Widdop and Australian and NSW representative Josh Dugan are their two biggest names off-contract at the end of 2017\. Both returned to training with Paul McGregor's side on Wednesday after their Four Nations commitments.

Warwick's brief tenure at the Dragons came after St George Illawarra lost Peter Mulholland to the Canberra Raiders at the end of the 2015 season.

Nice to see McDonnell's replacement has now been found. Now let's see if he can help keep Teddy and co. on board…

I hope that he does a better job here, then the recruitment at the Dragons!!!

Did you miss this bit BT?

Nice to see a replacement has been found, but how is it the recruitment managers job to retain existing players, especially when they're just new to the club. Would have thought that's Egans job and the recruitment managers job is to identify and recruit new players?

Sorry how the hell has the Dragons made good recruitment decisions recently.

Josh Dugan, this was pretty much a given. Team needs a star to replace Darius Boyd and Brett Morris.

Benji Marshall, left.

Gareth Widdop, yes big name at the time. Hasn't really been outstanding for Dragons…

Everyone else Merrin, Morris, sorry who on earth are the Dragons big names? Oh they Kept Jack De Belin and got Paul Vaughan and Tariq Sims... Well hey is this guy just going to recruit us a forward pack then it might work out.

Did you read the entire article? He was only at the Dragons 12 months,

Point. Sorry I did not realise that we were poaching Manly's old recruitment manager for 12 years and someone who only made a brief stay at the Dragons.

This is actually good news. Phew, I feel a lot better now….

Do what Manly has done... that sounds pretty wise.

People need to learn to read…...

Good recruitment continues for the admin/mgmt roles at the club.

Lets hope over the next few years these purchases turn the corner for us as a whole.

Its clear we are getting serious with our activities to drive a successful culture.

Will be interesting if this sparks more Des talk now 2 of his key personal over the years are here.

These blokes are on the merry go round from club to club. Can they influence any players decision to stay -not sure. Money and the chance to be part of long-term success will be key factors in determining the decisions of our top four.
Again for all the reasons that have been documented
our recruitment has been poor - imo. They are simply
all going to have to play out of their skins and compete - and hope that will be enough to influence these boys that success is within this clubs grasp.

Des would tick most of the boxes of what i want in a coach.
1 Experienced and a winning culture
2 Seems to attract the players he wants
3 Most importantly not someone with affiliations to Balmain or Magpies we have had 3 of those and all have been mediocre to pathetic.
It is no coincidence that our 2 best coaches came from outside of the JV. Sheens till end 2007 and Potter.
I am dreaming, he will never come here because we cant afford him and he is still under contact.Hope springs eternal.

Des actually did play with the Magpies at one stage, but it was a long time ago. I agree it would be nice to have him here though.

Seems like it's just another jobs for the boys appointment handpicked by Egan …just a different set of boys...Fresh eyes can be a good thing....Replacing Macca would mean working on Junior development something Manly have never been that good at..

Maybe a shift to 'the chequebook' approach is on the way..

Could be classified as job for the boys appointment but i took it as knowing someones ability and bringing them on board. I think he sounds good. Built Manly up and only had on season at St George so that cant be judged accurately even though in that time he secured all the young talent they wanted to keep.

Im not sure why there is so much negativity in this thread.

Because there are a lot of negative people on this forum who prefer to look at the possible downside on things rather than the possible upside.
