Wests Tigers recorded a nail biting 37-31 victory over Canberra Raiders at Canberra Stadium today in round 8 of the NYC competition.

In a match that went down to the wire, Wests Tigers dug deep to record a well deserved victory to move to 8 competition points.

Wests Tigers opened the scoring in the 8th minute when talented lock Jesse Sue weaved his way through from close range after an error from the Raiders. Half-back Jacob Miller converted the try for a 6-0 lead.

The Raiders hit back three minutes later when half-back Sam Williams laid on a try to Nathan Massey. He converted his own try for a 6-6 scoreline.

Hard-working Wests Tigers second-rower and captain Shaun Spence gave his team a 10-6 lead after crossing down the left edge in the 13th minute. Miller missed the conversion from out wide.

Williams then capitalised on some fine lead up work by hooker Matt McIllrick to cross between the uprights in the 36th minute. Massey converted for a 12-10 lead at half-time.

2nd Half
Wests Tigers got off to the perfect start in the second half when second-rower Mason Talolua picked up the ball from a bomb to offload to full-back Jay Bonnell who raced 70 metres to score under the posts. Miller converted the try to give Wests Tigers a 16-12 lead.

It became 20-12 when Mosese Fotuaika crashed over next to the posts. Miller converted to give Wests Tigers a 22-12 lead after 55 minutes.

Miller then set up the second try to Sue after he ran acrossfield inside the Raiders quarter before turning a ball back inside for Sue to hit a gap before stretching out to plant the ball down next to the posts. Miller converted the try for a 28-12 lead after 59 minutes.

The Raiders got back to 28-16 one minute when Anthony Scott sliced through the defence to race 20 metres to score next to the posts. Massey converted the try for a 28-18 scoreline.

Scott grabbed his second try in the 65th minute after Wests Tigers winger Faleula Finau failed to clean up a grubber kick. Massey converted the try from out wide for a 28-24 scoreline after 67 minutes.

Miller converted a penalty goal in the 69th minute to give Wests Tigers a 30-24 lead.

The Raiders drew level in the 71st minute when Matt McIllwrick outpaced the defence in a 20 metre run to score next to the posts. Massey converted the try for a 30-30 scoreline.

Williams gave Canberra a 31-30 lead when he landed a field goal in the 76th minute inside Wests Tigers quarter.

Wests Tigers drew level at 31-all when full-back Bonell kicked a field goal from 20 metres out in the 77th minute.

Bonnell then secured victory when he ran off a great inside flick pass by Tim Simona to score under the posts to send his team-mates into wild celebrations. Miller converted the try to give Wests Tigers a 37-31 victory.

Wests Tigers: 1\. Jay Bonnell 2\. Faleula Finau 3\. Matt Evans 4\. Joel Wisbey 5\. Limoni Kamuta 6\. Curtis Sironen 7\. Jacob Miller 8\. Neil Begovich 9\. Pat Politoni 10\. Matt Groat 11\. Mason Talolua 12\. Shaun Spence 13\. Jesse Sue

This win could really help set up the Tigers season now as the Raiders are no slouches in this competition and the Tigers now have the likes of Ben Murdoch Masila on the comeback trail from injury.

I am not into NYC much but I loved this game. Jacob Miller needs to find himself an NRL club quick smart. He is too good to be in line behind Lui & Moltzen. He will be a star. I reackon he is better than Some halves in the NRL.

Very enjoyable game today.

Miller has plenty of talent, he must see himself as a chance to make half in first grade at Wests Tigers otherwise surely he would have tried his hand at another club.

Miller could be groomed as a centre. His goalkicking potential is outstanding, and his passion and vision is right up there.

Long term he would be wasted as a centre, but short term I reckon he`d handle it with ease if that is what was asked of him. Too good for NYC that`s for sure.

Cunno do you think he will toss Lui ?

I am still surprised that Miller came to our club (very happy he did), there would have been easier clubs to go and play halfback in the NRL. He was behind Pearce/Carney at the Roosters. For mine he will not get the half jersery on a full time basis from Lui (need to sign Lui on a long term contract now) at our club anytime soon, I would be tempted to play Miller at 7 if Lui was injured.

I too would try Miller at centre. Sheens must have a plan for Miller, he is a talent, I am just not sure what the plan is.

There is actually a really good crop of young halves developing in or just out of NYC, Miller, Sam WIlliams, Shaun Johnson, Brad Murry and Gary Riccardi all look like first grade prospects. Daley Cherry-Evans and Beau Henry have transitioned nicely as well…...makes a mockery of the $550k for Sandow, right place right time!

BB I don't think Miller can toss Lui at this point but it is good to have the insurance for down the track and as other posters have written, he is capable of playing other positions. Miller also has time on his side, having said that, WTs will also need to 'give him a taste' at NRL to keep in interested and motivated IMO as the kid gives me the impression that he has high expectations of himself.
