High pitched screams, plenty of laughs, and excited students and teachers greeted Benji Marshall today as part of the annual Wests Tigers Balmain Blitz.
Players from Wests Tigers NRL squad were spread across 38 schools throughout the Balmain region to help promote junior rugby league, cultural harmony, and a healthy lifestyle.
More than 8000 students each received a Wests Tigers showbag.
Marshall, Gareth Ellis and Matt Hyland were overwhelmed by the attention given to them by students and staff at St Josephs Primary School, Enfield; Strathfield South Public School, Enfield; and St Vincents Primary School, Ashfield.
However it was Marshall who received the most attention. Kids were almost mesmerised as they hung off every word the Golden Boot winner said.
The screams became even louder when students and staff tried to do the ‘Benji Marshall sidestep’ around the man. Some of the female teachers simply chose an easier option of walking up and giving him a hug, much to their excitement.
Marshall revealed to students how he enjoyed playing a variety of sports growing up, including marbles and squash.
“ I wanted to tell the kids there is a lot more sports you can do apart from rugby league. Just as long as you are active and get involved,’’ Marshall said.
“That’s the message we tried to get out there today. To have a healthy lifestyle. Childhood obesity is a big problem in Australia and the more we can get kids to recognise they need to be eating healthy foods, the better.”
