Wests Tigers players will be heading back to school this Wednesday, meeting and playing with kids from across the Balmain district.

Several groups of Wests Tigers players will be visiting 35 schools across the area to teach them about the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Meanwhile, Wests Tigers head coach Tim Sheens gave up the opportunity to fly to North Queensland for the first trial in 2011, instead deciding to venture out to Leichhardt Oval on Saturday afternoon to watch the Roosters and Bulldogs who were playing a trial match. With the Wests Tigers taking on these two sides early in the season, Tim Sheens was no doubt casting a close eye on both teams.

PLAYERS VISIT SCHOOLS IN SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS
14/02/2011 3:17:28 PM

Four Wests Tigers players ventured down to the Southern Highlands on Wednesday, February 9, to visit around 3000 school students as part of the NRL Community Carnival activities.

Nu Akeripa and Jake Mullaney were joined by new U20s players Evander Waitoa and Sam Atuau in visiting schools in Bowral, Moss Vale, Picton and Robertson.

The players spread the word on cultural harmony, healthy eating and living and encouraged the students to get involved in their local junior rugby league clubs.

Along with the important information conveyed, the students got to get up close and personal with the players by competing in arm wrestling and push up competitions to win prizes.

The students at St Pauls Moss Vale were even treated to a special performance by Nu and Sam of the traditional Maori war dance ‘the haka’.

The visit was part of Wests Tigers Community Carnival efforts which sees the NRL squad visiting over 10,000 kids in a week. Next stop is the traditional Balmain Blitz on Wednesday, February 16.

STUDENTS ENJOY BALMAIN BLITZ WITH PLAYERS
By Wayne Cousins
16/02/2011 3:53:00 PM

High pitched screams, plenty of laughs, and excited students and teachers greeted Benji Marshall today as part of the annual Wests Tigers Balmain Blitz.

Players from Wests Tigers NRL squad were spread across 38 schools throughout the Balmain region to help promote junior rugby league, cultural harmony, and a healthy lifestyle.

More than 8000 students each received a Wests Tigers showbag.
Marshall, Gareth Ellis and Matt Hyland were overwhelmed by the attention given to them by students and staff at St Josephs Primary School, Enfield; Strathfield South Public School, Enfield; and St Vincents Primary School, Ashfield.

However it was Marshall who received the most attention. Kids were almost mesmerised as they hung off every word the Golden Boot winner said.

The screams became even louder when students and staff tried to do the ‘Benji Marshall sidestep’ around the man. Some of the female teachers simply chose an easier option of walking up and giving him a hug, much to their excitement.

Marshall revealed to students how he enjoyed playing a variety of sports growing up, including marbles and squash.

“ I wanted to tell the kids there is a lot more sports you can do apart from rugby league. Just as long as you are active and get involved,’’ Marshall said.

“That’s the message we tried to get out there today. To have a healthy lifestyle. Childhood obesity is a big problem in Australia and the more we can get kids to recognise they need to be eating healthy foods, the better.”

Wests Tigers Players visited the following schools: St Josephs Primary School, Enfield; Strathfield South Public School, Enfield; St Vincents Primary School, Ashfield; St Francis Xavier Primary School, Croydon Park; Orange Grove Public School, Leichhardt; Dobroyd Point Public School, Haberfield; Holy Innocents Primary School, Croydon; St Annes Primary School, Strathfield South; Croydon Park Public School, Croydon Park; St Brendans Primary School, Annandale; St Joan of Arc Primary School, Haberfield; Rydalmere East Public School, Ermington; Holy Spirit Primary School, North Ryde; St Charles Primary School, Ryde.

Birchgrove Public School, Balmain; Nicholson Street Public School, Balmain; St Fiacre’s Primary School, Leichhardt; St Columba’s Primary School, Leichhardt North; Meadowbank Public School, Ryde.
St Michaels Primary School, Meadowbank; St Therese Primary School, Denistone; Ermington West Public School, Ermington; Eastwood Heights Public School, Eastwood; St Kevins Primary School, Eastwood; St Anthony’s Primary School, Marsfield; North Ryde Public School, North Ryde; Carlingford Public School, Carlingford; St Scholastica’s College, Glebe; Our Lady Queen of Peace P.S, Gladesville; Hunters Hill Public School, Hunters Hill; Fort Street Public School, Observatory Hill; St Patricks Primary School, Summer Hill; Forest Lodge Public School, Forest Lodge; Dulwich Hill Public School, Dulwich Hill; St Paul of The Cross Primary School, Dulwich Hill; Lewisham Public School, Lewisham; Dulwich Hill High, Dulwich Hill; Ashfield Boys, Ashfield.

Last but by no means least…."Ashfield Boys, Ashfield."

They were busy, but I guess paired up the total 1sts and 20's squads would be able to cover some ground...well done.

My sons old school principal at Yates ave still shunning this marvellous opportunity I see, shame on you - you fossilised old bag.

Robbie and Woodsy went to my boys school today. Only signed Wests Tigers merchandise but i think that was a directed of the principal, not the players…....cant be sure though. Anyway, my boy loved it and had me in the park all arvo beating me up.

Great stuff! Just saw the report on fox news…hilarious watching the kids putting a "benji" side step on benji!!!
