Grant was stuck behind arguably the greatest player to ever play the game.

Simpkin has Mbye in front of him.

Yes I’m sure his time will come but hopefully it’s sooner than later.

Mate , he will benefit from a whole year in reserve grade . There’s plenty of tricks he pulls that won’t work in first grade , and I’m sure there’s even more that haven’t worked in nsw cup . At 19 he will benefit greatly from this year just kicking butt in reserve grade . 5 plus years ago he would be on TV destroying Toyota cup , and this wouldn’t even be a conversation . That’s how young the guy is. It’s clear he’s our future . And I’m really confident thats been relayed to him from the club.

The reason Grant is so good is because he spent the time in reserve grade. How can you not see that ?

I watched Simpkin in the CC game and his service was spot on, he only player about 60 minutes.
I think that we need to sign him up longer then 2023, so the new Brisbane team don't swoop on him.

I’ve no doubt we’ve probably tried , and it’s Simpkin and his management holding out . Not because they want to bail , but because it’s better for him once he debuts . As it will be obvious real quick how good he is , if it isn’t obvious yet to the rest of the league .

Exactly. His price will skyrocket once he plays NRL. We could have the top 2 Dally M rookie of the year contenders in our team (Daine Laurie, Jake Simpkin). If a Wests Tigers' player gets Dally M Rookie of the Year twice in a row, every young kid is gonna be rushing to sign up with Michael Maguire.

Chill. It's only round 4. He's played 3 games of professional rugby league having not played a game for 18 months.

He's a mile better than Mbye and probably better than Liddle at this stage. He should be in the 17 and it's pretty silly that he isn't.

I reckon you are right and it's the right move for the team but I can understand giving him time playing reserve grade. He is only 19.

Surely he gets a chance at some point this season and if he continues to play to the level he seems capable it'll be hard to drop him.

Liddle is also off contract this season whereas I think we have Simpkins for another 2 years.

Tim Brasher made his debut for Balmain 1st grade when he was only 17 years old. Rankin made his debut many years at an even earlier age.


If you cant see the difference in workload between wing/centre and hooker, Im not sure what else I can tell you.

BTW, how did that turn our for Jordan Rankin?

The workload between wing/centre extends for a full 80 minutes, If Simpkins comes in to support Liddle the 80 minute workload is shared between both players. In my opinion Simpkins is the tougher of the two players and would play an important role for the duration he would be on the field.

All Im going to say is that all you guys wetting yourself over Simpkin to play and bag Mbye and others ...get a coaching job at NRL level and see if you are going to throw a kid to the wolves...Madge knows best,if Jake is ready then Madge will debut him...could you imagine if he was in the side,lasted 20 mins and got hammered what the pundits would give our club...be serious and wait patiently.we have been lacking sensible recruitment for years...now we have it all the keyboard coaches want to flout it..

Lets face it. DL, Brooks, AD and Liddle are locked with Mbye in the bench are what we will be seeing for the foreseeable future.


Our fwd pack is formidable and can more than match it, just need that spine to gel.

If he could play Fullback,Wing,Centre 5/8 and half back he can take Mbye's spot in the meantime he'll have to bide his time in NSW CUP and keep gaining experience as a lot of young players have to do.

Liddle can’t play 80 so we need someone to cover him. Mbye is hopeless at hooker. I don’t believe he should have to bide his time if he is good enough (which he is).

He may not do much as a hooker but he does what is needed and if a back goes down who gonna call.

We may not need a back but we will definitely need a hooker.

And our 1st choice hooker scored 2 tries in 3 games, not bad! His service was nearly faultless, and with our experienced, and sadly the worst forwards in the NRL: Tamou, JO, Packer and L Leilua - we cannot expect more!


There is a lot in this post Im struggling to parse. First of all, Liddles service was faultless? It was rubbish, passes too high, behind players. Im not sure what has happened to him but his passing is poor.

I mentioned in another thread the other day that Madge is sorting all the players out atm and honing in on the for and against of all the players...Garner was playing well when he was on the other side with Luke then he went downhill when he was switched...Madge is trying to make him a versatile backrower and because he is young he is exploring all options for him...I have faith in Madge to develop Garner into a consistent backrower by years end...

Not really Cairns,its a different game these days,the young guys have proven how brittle they can be up against hardened NRL players with many seasons behind them...I would rather develop a young guy very slowly and keep him healthy and on the field for many future seasons...
Take note of JWH and how he has no care for the opposition no matter their age,I wouldnt want a 17/18 year old rookie to have to cop a cheap shot off that thug and ruin his confidence for the future when you can select games and minimum times to get used to the NRL hardened arena...I know the old arguement "they have to start sometime"but its where and when to start them to build their confidence,thats what CC is for,they still play against great players but get to sub when things get tough,much harder in the fg team where its an expectation to perform well...
Have a look how Newys coach reacted to his winger when he dropped the ball and gave us a wiff,what do you think he will do with him this week...

There are cheap shots in CC as well
But yes there is no where to hide in 1st grade
The thing is he played in the trial against Manly who had hardened 1st grade players in their team
He didn't seem to have any problems in that game from memory
A couple more games in CC and I would consider bringing him in for 20 minutes stints in 1st grade
By then Liddle will be feeling a few niggles and could do with a little rest
Otherwise I think we will see liddle suffering

Jake Simpkin is contracted until end of 2022, he's not going anywhere any time yet, unless the club chooses to allow it. And don't give me "what does a contract even mean these days?" nonsense.
