Wests Tigers - Trash or Treasure

Most of the people were really excited having BJ. Oh finally a player with x-factor and an aggressive player while conceding to the fact that he has an error or two in his game. Now apparently not.

willing to give him some more time, hes still a big body decent speed and skills.

When we change up some halves and they actually can get him one on one with someone instead of crabbing sideways i hope we will see what he can do.

So far hasn't been worth it but hopefully can turn it around

It’s a bit like the COE someone else needs to put up the coin . One question do the Tigers own the COE or are they leasing the space from the council !

Lots of peeps disappointed with our ladder position and after 9 years - rightly so. I think Justin Pascoe wants to the Tigers to be a destination of choice but we are more like the last chance hotel. Other clubs trash become our treasure. It’s ok to have the odd player who was wanted for whatever reason. New club - new start, but we have nearly built an entire roster on it.

JRey - hadn’t played in the preceding 12 months at the Dogs before we signed him And was coming off contract . We basically doubled their offer. Yes he was still wanted at Dogs but not for the price or tenure of contract.

MBye - Was being shopped around by the Dogs. Huge back ended contract that we are paying for and was failing to spark the Dogs attack. It’s hard to believe that their attack was worse then than it is now.

BJ - Unwanted by the Raiders. Was being forced out with the purchase of Curtis Scott. I think we probably paid overs for him and gave him 4 years.

Eiso- Not wanted by Penrith.

Clark - see above

Twal - Not 100% sure but I think they released him to us as he was excess

Mataulino - was already struggling with significant knee issues when he arrived from Warriors

Doueihi - Could have probably stayed with Rabbits but was unlikely to be in starting 17 unless through injury.

Jennings - unwanted at Souths

Taylor - Unwanted at Penrith. Playing reserve grade

McQueen - not sure If we signed him prior to or after his neck injury but was not going to be wanted.

Robbie and Benji - their story is a bit different but without the Tigers offering them a place probably would have both retired in 2018.

There are probably others in the squad as well

Melbourne on the other hand have a core group of stars and buy the odd discard with the right attitude and that improves those players. E.g. Brenko Lee, Justin Olam, Tom Eisenhuth etc. We have tended to buy discards as marquee signings and that doesn’t really work.

Our recruitment is too reactionary.

Agree Cochy, there doesn’t appear to be purpose in signings. There are no job specs, it appears to be a matter of an unwanted player who wants top dollar who may be a 6 or a 4, so we agree to pay top dollar and find a different position?
Storm wasn’t built in a day though. Bellamy has a simplistic job spec.. he looks for size, speed and some ball skills with an aptitude for a good attitude, then backs himself and his team to teach the rest. Of course it would be a lot easier on Madge if he didn’t have to dig us out of this hole we’re in.

I'm pretty sure it would be council owned as they are stumping up most of the cash.

People were wary and skeptical.
He screwed up massively against the Panthers... Spent 4 week out and we heard all the 'I need to mature' fluff pieces.
First or 2nd game back he was lucky not to be binned with the game on the line.

If he wouldn't change after the first screw up why will he in future?

Mental issues

Treasure! for end of the road type players looking for one more contract to top up their superannuation.

We have had to buy cheap discards due to;
1. four or five years the club was flat broke and not only was the club forced to buy very cheap players but also so very cheap coaches i.e. Jason Taylor.

2. A little over two years we seemed to be recovering from our finance difficulties bu the club signed a coach name Cleary who was much fraudulent rather than frugal with our spare money and he overspent signing from Canterbury a cost of over $1.5 million very expensive crocks and superannuant seekers on very long term contracts. Cleary by the way immediateley made one of these Captain of the club. We could well be stuck with these two for at least the next two years.

2. Cleary only served a short term of his contract. He broke his contract to coach Penrith and his son.

Got to be realistic about what players we can sign as a middle-tier club without massive pulling power.

That all being said, the Eels 2020 are heavily made up of rejects and they are near top of the comp. Jennings, Gutho, Waqa Blake, Moses, Nathan Brown, Lane, RCG, Takairangi, Gower etc. all unfavoured at their previous clubs.

Moses wasn't unfavoured here, he had a huge contract sitting in front of him, RCG and Jennings, while down on form at the time had a history of rep footy behind them,

But you are right about being realistic with the players we can attract.

Wow that's sad how reactionary we are. Are we also unable to sign players during the season for next year? Seems like half of our squad these days shipped in halfway through pre-season.

Considering we finished 14th & 9th whilst he was here, I doubt we'd be any better or worse. Probs still have Robbie playing 9 lol

Just on BJ, according to this, he’s only signed to next year with a club option to renew him: https://www.nrl.com/news/2020/01/23/2020-signings-tracker-nrl-rosters-signings--contracts-for-all-16-teams/#weststigers

That’s better news than I thought.

Trash
I cannot think currently on any really good signing these past 5 years.
Let’s hope that changes sooner than later.
It looks like we spent our cap $ on players unwanted and paid overs, shows in not making finals now for 9 years.
The way AD played last night gives some credentials that we finally moving in the right direction, need to move on a few older players this off season to be more competitive in 2021.

BJ should be a good player but falls down in a couple of areas.

1) He is an ol' fashioned hog - rarely if ever passes the ball and, when he does, he's exhausted all attacking options by squeezing out to the sideline. Playing outside him would be enormously frustrating.

2) He has dry ice for brains; if you look closely you can see it ooze out his ears at night. He will NEVER be a smart player and the brain farts will inevitably cost us at crucial times.

You have a few options as a club, you can either recruit talent or develop talent.

We're certainly not a recruitment club.

For the last decade we've signed players that other clubs don't want. I never really buy the whole 'chance of playing first grade' spin when we sign a reject. if the bloke was any good he would have been playing first grade.

Sadly we're not much of a development club either.

When a bloke like James Tedesco left.we should have had a few young guys waiting in the wings. Instead, he was replaced by players that other clubs offloaded.

The good development clubs always have a replacement or two coming through the ranks.

It's why a club like Penrith has gone ahead in leaps and bounds while we're pondering what went wrong. Even Melbourne (with no local juniors) do it better than us.

I don't like playing the blame game when things are not going well, but our board's choice of CEO was really poor. He's solid on the commercial side but the lack of footy knowledge to turn us into a development club is showing year after year.

Rejects from other clubs are never going to get us into the top 8.

We need a new 7 and 6. Total reset. A 7 with football brain that can run a team and win repeat sets. And a 6 that can look for overlaps. Its been too long. Brooks is shot to bits. Jrey is hopless . Benji past it and walters not the answer.
