Wests Tigers v the new salary cap

There is a lot if debate about the new salary cap ceiling.

Many clubs have already signed players in the belief that it would be around $10m from 2018

Many observers believe that the NRL will actually have NO cap for 2018 similar to the AFL this year. This will favour the big clubs who will get to keep players where normally they would have to shed. It puts us at a disadvantage because we have count every penny and may lose the "other 3".

If the NRL go with a salary cap well under the $10M for 2018 then these clubs must shed players to stay under the cap. This would favour us as we have money and some good players would be forced back into the market (probably even subsidised by their previous club). Some observers believe that the NRL are deliberately going this way as a means to helping the lesser clubs - Wt's, Newcastle etc.

This is why I am astounded with money being offered to the "other 3" and others (J Bird).

Thiughts?

Interesting. The NRL would want WT, knights and Titans to do well, so it makes some sense as recently these clubs haven't been very strong.

I know that WT are as unhappy about the certainty as anyone else (from a board member at a function), but who knows what's really going on.

Two complete opposite outcomes there. Which is it? I haven't heard that no salary cap is being considered.

The newly proposed cap will still be larger than it ever has been so we will see more money being thrown around, record contracts etc. Even with top 30 squad instead of 25 it should still work out more comparatively.

Clubs (apparently) making big plays for our 3 are either trying to inflate their prices or will need to shed quite a few players (which they might be in a position to do). They likely would know what they're doing and take a risk or have the roster balanced out appropriately.

If there's no cap though, we're in trouble.

i think it's great..!5 Other Club Salary Cap breaches in 2018..We are minor premiers and beat ourselves in the Grand final..

NRL just need to pull their finger out and stop low balling…Unless they have already spent the Broadcast windfall in 'other areas'...

Ah but wouldn't it be good to be premiers AND runners up lol

Interesting article here - http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/would-a-salary-cap-freeforall-clean-out-the-nrls-dead-wood-20170405-gveadu.html

IMO it'll get sorted out - the NRL offer the other was a deliberate lowball. Will be closer to $10m once all is said and done.

Was interesting, But IMO that would be hari-kari on the NRL's part. In an age where AFL, Soccer and to a lesser extent Rugby are taking fans, we want to alienate existing supporters on a hope that new ones will come on board.

Our sport is made for TV, it is best watched and absorbed on TV. We don't need 50,000 seat stadiums, we need 20,000 seat stadiums that are sold out every week. If i new the tigers were going to be playing every friday night at 8pm i wouldn't miss a game. the nil needs to be even handed.

We need the NRL to support clubs like the tigers, parra, penrith, bulldogs who have massive fan bases, when these clubs are doing well, crowed numbers are up. even when we are travelling ordinary we had approx 15,000 at LO and it is always a great atmosphere, same for CS, belmore, Pepper, lottoland and parra stadium.

FWIW I agree with you on all that.
Mascord often plays devil's advocate in his articles, and this was no different - certainly a different perspective.
Would rather read thinkpieces like that rather than the usual gutter gossip from the likes of Hooper and Weidler.

Haven't the NRL just recently sounded out a cap of $8.4M for next year?

I have no idea why it's taken so long to determine, it's creating havoc for next year. BUT if you are a club that's gone ahead and spent $9.5M before the NRL said you could, then you are also to blame. NRL needs to get this sorted (and I don't know the ins and outs of why it isn't sorted), but clubs who spend in advance of the curve are stupid; maybe they hope for allowances or backpedalling because the NRL has delayed so long.

Imagine signing onto a big deal right now with the risk that actually the cap may be lower than expected and your club make revoke its offer.

Still not sorted but should happen very soon. Lets hope we are in a position to grab some quality cast offs

There's the cut Jyrsk, why has the NRL stalled for so long on the real salary cap? Hence my original post.

The big clubs always do as they wish then white wash the NRL. They know how much behind the scenes clout they have. I am hoping that the NRL don't cave to the $10M cap.
