What am I missing about Ben Murdoch-Masala?

Being from the Central Coast, I don't get to see many FYC or NRL games but I do make a point of getting to a couple of Sydney matches each year. I saw Murdoch-Masila play in the 20s, at Campbelltown, against Penrith, last year just before he seemed to injure his shoulder. In the time he was on the field, he was the most damaging forward in either team. He showed power running, a great fend and an excellent offload. Basically, he terrorised the opposition and was a class above his opponents. If he can get fully fit and confident, he will be a game breaker!

I wonder whether Sheens has asked him to hold back in first grade. He doesn't try to break tackles or offload and I think this may be a directive. Let him establish himself before he shows his full range of talents.

The quality of defence and speed of the game is massively different from NYC to NRL. He just doesn't get the same roll on and room that you get in Toyota Cup when he plays 1st grade. He'll need some time to adjust to the pace of 1st grade

I can't imagine him being told to not break tackles. I think its all about his work rate, fitness, and how comfortable he is to call for the ball. To be fair it took Dwyer a season to hit the ball at pace in first grade.

For those who have seen the best of BMM, what are his strengths. Hard running? Offloading? Work-rate? Power player?

I've seen a few performances in FG and there hasn't been that moment where you think wow, his a player. I know his young but I just want to know the sign that resembles the hype.

He is a hard running tackle breaking forward, with an offload. Frank Pritchard would be a good comparison, seems to play a bit tighter than Frank, and maybe not as athletic,

Also - Around 20 years old.

Played only a hand ful of games in 1st grade,

Lookout in 2012, 13 +

Well Frank Pritchard can destroy sides so a player like him would be a great addition. Thanks for your thoughts.

Look I hope I am wrong about Ben but my point was that based only what I have seen in FG I don't believe he will be ready in 2012\. If he can get fit then it does sound from some of the comments of others on the forum who watch him play in Toyota Cup that he has great potential?

I know one game doesn't make a season, but I watched him pretty closely at Leichhardt the other week when the NYC team played Melbourne. To me it seems as if he's a tweener at the moment. Too good for NYC, not quite good enough for 1st grade. It's obviously the difference in pace he struggles with the most.

He was looking for work all game against Melbourne, did plenty of work in defence and made yards all game (was even chasing grubbers into the in-goal).

I actually got the impression that some of the Melbourne forwards were going out of their way not to run at him after a while. I think it was him that crunched one of the Melbourne wingers which put him out of the game.

Definitely worth persisting with, hell we've persisted with less talented players for a lot longer!
