What it means to be Wests Tigers..

I still find it kind of surprising that new players might not know or buy into the Wests and Balmain history, but I suppose it hearkens back to something I said the other day, that the kids being signed to the team now as juniors weren't even born before the JV.

I agree with you. The combined histories of our clubs is rich and very storied. I dont want these kids to care about the past. I want them to forge their own legends, traditions. In a generation to be looked back on with misty eyed nostalgia of a great team they were.

As I type this I realized that in another 5 seasons I will have followed the Tigers as long as I followed my beloved Magpies.

I disagree with not wanting players to care about the past.

I think its a super initiative which my brother and I have thought should have happened not just for the players but for all members. When I first followed the magpies in 1975 in 2nd class my friend and I (a Canterbury fan) would go to the library at lunch and look up the 2 or 3 rugby league books and learn about the past the premierships and internationals history meant something and I wanted to feel like I followed a team that meant something and represented my area. I can imagine some juniors might not care but some may be inspired to play for a club built on 2 foundation clubs. Also as well they know that this is important to many fans and indeed may bring back some dormant Wests or Balmain fans who may not have been sure if this bus was heading in their direction.
This also shows Cleary has identified very early that the place lacks culture and identity.

Super stuff.

I think it's a great initiative and approach taken by Cleary and co. moving forward. For the first time in a long time I'm getting the vibe that there is a real sense of direction and purpose about the club with the rebuild that Cleary has undertaken. Moving forward, it's a long off-season but I'm optimistic that we'll see a squad that really want to play for one another, and that can go a long way towards making the finals.

Yeah and no

We keep focussing on 2005 Willow

Lets make some new history , not recruiting every Hodgo , Phats and Skando that's been involved with the club

So focusing on a premiership is a bad thing. It was a special moment . Their trying to build culture. It's like a person knowing where they come from they feel like they belong to something.

Yeah it is when they tried the emulate it with the same style of football that died in 2005

It should of been something we built from and we wasted it and trying to bring back the past doesn't focus on what's important , the future

Thats really a very weak reply happy
Just because we didnt maintain success post the GF doesnt mean its irrelevant.
Its all one and the same, the vid is Wests..Balmain..Wests Tigers…its who we are and where we're from...our history is our history, it is what it is
The future is touched on from the 10 or 11 min mark

I want them 100% focussed on the future , not worrying about the nobody cares about other than Wests and Balmain fans

I know ,I know I'm the worst WT's fan of all time , I can live with it

Sorry Happy but though normally I tend to agree with you I'll have to disagree here.
The video is all about big picture culture, and you touched on it in your response. If you're on the paddock wearing the WT colours you're representing something that WT fans think about, hold dear and respect. As a player you don't necessarily have to become an instant WT historian but you should respect the people that pay to come and see you play each week, and this is what they revere. This is why you're here. This is the bus. Yes, the players should care. I get it.

Well, it's comforting to know you have to put up with it as well, Happy. I'd hate to think it was only us who had to suffer. Lol

I'm on the bus , but I wanna got to the promised land , not the desert

Same way Geo is on the bus , he wants to stop to use the loo and the bakery

I know MWZ would care
Noffa cares…young Suli I reckon (maybe in time)
ET would care...Rowdy most def would care...Brooks coming thru Holy X would be aware..this will rub off on the others...youre wrong here Hap

Obviously some care , some who've been here since day dot , but that history ain't convince some young player to sign here or stay is it ??

As long as they pay up November 1 that's all that matters

And the quicker some wake up that league in 2018 isn't all about history , appealing to players emotions and a premiership won 12 years ago the better

We've brought 12/17 from the 2005 premiership side , name 1 true success story

Take off the gold ,black and white sunnies all , they are misting up again

Look at it through 15 other NRL clubs eyes , it's just pure nonsense based on an attempt to appeal to fans

I agree with this.

Most people in a job do better if they understand their role in something bigger. They might leave a job for more money, or better opportunity, but your average human does their best while they are there. Culture, history, pride, the sense of representing something bigger than yourself, can be the different between "almost there" and "arrived".

Whats, Skando, Hodgo, didn't make grade at WT, but they will be remembered by fans as WT players first and foremost. They were part of the only group that did succeed, and their story about that success, only 5 years after a merger that is only gelling now, should be celebrated forever. They played in the only WT team where that team spirit was enough. 12 years later we had found a new low, which for mine was worse than the Terry Lamb days, and now the club has finally hit reset in ALL departments. :sign:

I love these threads because it shows a unity amongst fans that we haven't seen in years. We suffered together, imo, since Tallis and Ayoub had that chat on triple m. We're still standing, stronger than the same time in recent memory.

Sorry about the rant, I'm so pumped for 2018, when I start writing a simple sentence I can't stop. Even if the bus has a couple of empty seats, we have recruited grit, and we have missed that more than anything.

Once again Happy misses the whole point of the video with his dribble… :brick: :deadhorse:

No you missed my point numbskull

You stand up for your team no questions asked

The modern day footballer couldn't give two hoots about the history of our club/clubs

None of them could pick Wayne Smith out of a line up let alone know he played for the magpies

The only people who care for our past is us , the fans , one club players at the WT's are about as common as square wheeled cars

I can , is there a prize?
I like prizes

Well the way you're presenting it, all the players are mercenaries. There may well be a level of truth to that in the modern game as opposed to the old fortress mentality but it isn't everything.
Lets think about Jarryd Hayne. What does he play for? Where did the "This is my house" comment fit in.
Like him or not, he is one that knows the value of culture. He hit us (with the black, gold and white sunnies on) where it hurt.
Culture does matter to the players as well as the fans. It is part of what they play for.

booooooooooooooo… :unamused:

Us out of towners and interstaters know what it means to be WT's

Sitting in a pub full of Broncos /Cowboys supporters , copping all the poo and saying "bring it girls " :imp:

Hard core fans to the core , no surrender , no mercy , no prisoners :smiling_imp:

You Mexican nancies have it easy

Pfft… Im white and I live in Bankstown... they say the bark is worse than the bite, difference is down here everyone has a mouthful of teeth.

Meh

Yeah what about South Sydney supporters

Shoots that theory down real quick

Dingoes only hunt in packs , take down the leader

Ipswich makes Bankstown look like Bondi Junction

You think you had it tough :
\
\
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
Aye, very passable, that, very passable bit of risotto
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
Nothing like a good glass of Château de Chasselas, eh, Josiah?
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
You're right there, Obadiah
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Who'd have thought thirty year ago we'd all be sittin' here drinking Château de Chasselas, eh?
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
In them days we was glad to have the price of a cup o' tea
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
A cup o' cold tea
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Without milk or sugar
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
Or tea
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
In a cracked cup, an' all
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Oh, we never had a cup. We used to have to drink out of a rolled up newspaper
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
The best we could manage was to suck on a piece of damp cloth
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
But you know, we were happy in those days, though we were poor
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
Because we were poor. My old Dad used to say to me, "Money doesn't buy you happiness, son"
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Aye, 'e was right
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
Aye, 'e was
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
I was happier then and I had nothin'. We used to live in this tiny old house with great big holes in the roof
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
House! You were lucky to live in a house! We used to live in one room, all twenty-six of us, no furniture, 'alf the floor was missing, and we were all 'uddled together in one corner for fear of falling
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
Eh, you were lucky to have a room! We used to have to live in t' corridor!
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
Oh, we used to dream of livin' in a corridor! Would ha' been a palace to us. We used to live in an old water tank on a rubbish tip. We got woke up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us! House? Huh
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Well, when I say 'house' it was only a hole in the ground covered by a sheet of tarpaulin, but it was a house to us
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
We were evicted from our 'ole in the ground; we 'ad to go and live in a lake
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
You were lucky to have a lake! There were a hundred and fifty of us living in t' shoebox in t' middle o' road
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
Cardboard box?
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
Aye
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at six o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of 'ot gravel, work twenty hour day at mill for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would thrash us to sleep with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
Well, of course, we had it tough. We used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick road clean wit' tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two wit' bread knife
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah
