Great stuff guys!! I used to love wrestling and afl when I was young I was cheering during the 2005 afl gf and crying during the 2006 one…
to this day I hate the west coast eagles lol. My cousins and uncles used to love the dogs so I kinda went for them (ya know when ya don't follow the sport but follow a team anyway)
So one day i was at my cousins house and the dogs where vsing this orange team and I saw this Bloke with tribal tatoo, he was stepping all over the place and throwing 20 metre passes.
After that day I watched NRL more regularly and I really got to enjoy it I got into nrl more as I got older and supported the tigers ever since that day..

WARNING!!! another War and Peace from Turnstyle… :unamused:
my story is a sort of 'bizarro' parallel to yours TM:
Born and bred in WA (lived in perth pretty much my whole life apart from 3.5 yrs) i was very much indoctrinated into Aussie rules.
back in the days before 87 (when the eagles joined the then VFL) the main focus over here was the WAFL, and i was a mad crazy Perth supporter. used to wear the jumper ALL the time (especially on school photo day!!) and it was my dream to one day play for them when i was older.
because of where i grew up, and then who i knew, i ended up playing for two other WAFL clubs - against perth, and so my passion for them diminished as you would expect - and i fluctuated between AFL clubs (sydney and then carlton) but never had any passion for them.
from playing with and knowing quite a few guys who went on to AFL you get a different connection, but it was when i first moved to london and watched a game at my granddad's house there i saw a very good friend of mine playing for the eagles - it was surreal! ever since then i found myself more concerned with how they were going and just gave in and am a token eagles supporter now.
NOW. the actual thread!!!
my mum met my dad when i was 8 (he is my step dad if you cant work that part out!! but he is my dad) and he is from Burala (spelling?)/lidcombe area and grew up there and played lower grades for Wests. we used to go and watch him play for a local team here and then continued to go to the games when he hung up the boots. i would always be the ballboy at the games and had a really annoying habit of kicking the ball back onto the field after every shot at a penalty or conversion regardless of whether the ball went dead or not because i didnt know all the rules!!
so that got me interested in league, and for some reason a couple of years later i just picked balmain. this was 1982, and i think i just liked the jersey and tiger, as well as thinking Kerry Hemsley was just a damn awesome wildman!! around the tina turner "simply the best" years, league got quite good tv coverage here so i was able to watch it a lot and understand it.
dad was always a wests supporter, i was always a balmain supporter. so when they merged it was perfect for us because we then supported the same team! i think i love the wests tigers way more than i ever did balmain, although the 89 grand final still burns deeply in my heart!!
bloody jackson and chicka....
these days the tigers are my only real passion as a sporting team.
and like all love, it can really hurt and it can really feel great!!! :sign:
