What year did you start to support Wests Tigers?

I was born into a balmain tigers family as my username suggests and followed them with a passion. Didn't know if the Wests tigers would make me feel the same but about 30 seconds into round one against the broncos in 2000 i realised they sure did.

The first rugby league game I ever watched was the 1997 grand final when I was in Kindergarten. I then started following the NRL in 1998, and supported Balmain thanks to the influence of my sister and Pop

I was 11yrs old in 1988 when a kid moved to my school and got me interested in league. He was a Balmain fan, so I started following them. Paul Sirronen became my idol and never let me down. I still remember him playing for Austalia and destroying France in Parkes. My Favorite game ever. I cried like a baby when we lost the 89 Grand Final. I still dislike Canberra to this day. When we merged with Wests in 2000,I didn't mind. As long as we didn't merge with the Broncos.LOL. I'm a Queenslander but I hate the Broncos. My dream would be to smash them in a Grand Final. But just beating them would be good.

Great stuff guys!! I used to love wrestling and afl when I was young I was cheering during the 2005 afl gf and crying during the 2006 one…

to this day I hate the west coast eagles lol. My cousins and uncles used to love the dogs so I kinda went for them (ya know when ya don't follow the sport but follow a team anyway)

So one day i was at my cousins house and the dogs where vsing this orange team and I saw this Bloke with tribal tatoo, he was stepping all over the place and throwing 20 metre passes.

After that day I watched NRL more regularly and I really got to enjoy it I got into nrl more as I got older and supported the tigers ever since that day..

WARNING!!! another War and Peace from Turnstyle… :unamused:

my story is a sort of 'bizarro' parallel to yours TM:

Born and bred in WA (lived in perth pretty much my whole life apart from 3.5 yrs) i was very much indoctrinated into Aussie rules.

back in the days before 87 (when the eagles joined the then VFL) the main focus over here was the WAFL, and i was a mad crazy Perth supporter. used to wear the jumper ALL the time (especially on school photo day!!) and it was my dream to one day play for them when i was older.

because of where i grew up, and then who i knew, i ended up playing for two other WAFL clubs - against perth, and so my passion for them diminished as you would expect - and i fluctuated between AFL clubs (sydney and then carlton) but never had any passion for them.

from playing with and knowing quite a few guys who went on to AFL you get a different connection, but it was when i first moved to london and watched a game at my granddad's house there i saw a very good friend of mine playing for the eagles - it was surreal! ever since then i found myself more concerned with how they were going and just gave in and am a token eagles supporter now.

NOW. the actual thread!!!

my mum met my dad when i was 8 (he is my step dad if you cant work that part out!! but he is my dad) and he is from Burala (spelling?)/lidcombe area and grew up there and played lower grades for Wests. we used to go and watch him play for a local team here and then continued to go to the games when he hung up the boots. i would always be the ballboy at the games and had a really annoying habit of kicking the ball back onto the field after every shot at a penalty or conversion regardless of whether the ball went dead or not because i didnt know all the rules!!

so that got me interested in league, and for some reason a couple of years later i just picked balmain. this was 1982, and i think i just liked the jersey and tiger, as well as thinking Kerry Hemsley was just a damn awesome wildman!! around the tina turner "simply the best" years, league got quite good tv coverage here so i was able to watch it a lot and understand it.

dad was always a wests supporter, i was always a balmain supporter. so when they merged it was perfect for us because we then supported the same team! i think i love the wests tigers way more than i ever did balmain, although the 89 grand final still burns deeply in my heart!!
bloody jackson and chicka....

these days the tigers are my only real passion as a sporting team.

and like all love, it can really hurt and it can really feel great!!! :sign:

Was a Balmain Boy all my life, from 8yrs old, untill the merger and have stuck with them since 2000 and have never looked back…

I quite often told my mates who took the p...s out of me for following a merged team, I would rather follow half a team in the NRL than none...in all honesty WESTS TIGERS is the best ever merger I would ever want to follow,no other team interests me...

I'm the same TT. Bestest team ever.

Ever since i was born.. Both of my parents were massive Tiger( Balmain) supporters. To this day, my siblings and I still have our newborn Tiger jerseys our parents dressed us in, when they took us to the games. Very cute. After the merger, we continued to follow the WT.
My better half, his parents, siblings and our children are all WT through and through. :supporter:

From the start, though I admit I was a little tentative supporting the merger, at first - it just felt weird to me after 30 odd years of supporting a stand alone team. Took about 2-3 years to warm to the idea completely, then I became a fully fledged Wests Tigers tragic

Pretty well the same as Flip.

From day one as a was a Western Suburbs fan from 1977\. Was happy with the merger which landed us a premiership in 2005\. Wests were the flogging boys of the comp and were nearly kicked out the comp like Newtown. Must admit I changed to Canberra Raiders from mid 80's until the merge as I love their attacking style of play and was a huge Daley, Stuart, Waters, Mal, Mullins and Clyde fan. The merger bought me back into the fold. As a Wests fan always had a soft spot for the Tigers.

Good to Sparts breeding his own Tigers supporter base…5 heaven help him..congrats Spart.

Was a Balmain fan since '89 (earliest memory I can remember was Dad being upset over the GF,) and sort of fell off over the first couple of years of the merger and only loosely followed them. Got back into it in 2002 and have been hooked since.

This club is driving me to heart failure.

I followed the maggies from 84, some hard years. My mum was a Balmain supporter so always had them as my 2nd team, couldn't have asked for a better merge!!! Go the Tigers!!!

I began back in 1975 or 76\. Always loved the tigers. Dad failed in making me an eel. We used to go watch tigers eels games all the time back then through the 70's and 80's. And the tigers always seemed to lose. It was a lonely place was Cumberland oval back then for a little tigers fan with a black and gold flag amongst thousands of blue and yellow ones. Oh…the tears! We sucked then even worse than we do now! 😢

Ok…so where we at?

Can I suggest a name?

How about Kerry - can't lose either way whether boy or girl!

(Hemsley that is  )

Followed WTs from a distance the first couple of years, read about them, checked results, watched if on TV….got more into it about '03
Followed the Magpies from early 70s before that...grew up & lived opposite Wests Ashfield - your local team picked you in those days

From the start. Before that followed the mighty maggies since the mid 70s. It was a family thing. My father was a wests man and fondly recalls our time as the millionaires in the 60s, and my grandfather followed them since the 1920s.
